Look, I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade. If you like "Rebels?" Fine.
But for some, most, none(???) of you to not see this show's plethora of problems? At least from this first season? C'mon now.
[SPOILERS]: Star Wars: Rebels - Thoughts?
According to the video Jagergryte linked, we'll see at least one Pelta in season 2.
I did a freeze frame of the ships in hyperspace after they escaped....they're all CR90's
Are you sure? I'm positive one has a wider neck at the front of the craft, which is one of the differences between the CR-90 and the Pelta.
There's a "fly by" before they jump to hyperspace of all 3 of the craft in question. You see 2 of them very well and they are obviously CR-90's. The third one (closest) you can see the bridge area sticking out on the left/port side as it flies away from you. It juts out like a CR-90 and NOT a Pelta. More obviously it also doesn't have the large back wing or large central engine of the Pelta. Everything you can see matches the other CR-90's.
Not enough backstory on these characters? Looks like you'll be getting more on Kanan .

You have to remember that the show has to make all of these models for the show, and when you are on a time schedule, sometimes copy and paste will have to suffice. Yea it was kinda lame that it was the same CR-90s used, but now the model exist and the next time a rebel assault happens, they could add in more variety. TCW had to deal with the same issues. thats why the later seasons of that show were so much better than the earlier ones. by the time seasons 3 and 4 came around, at least 70% of all the characters, settings, props, items were made. No one had to sit down and make a Senator. they were in the show a season prior.
Well following the revelation, I no longer feel happy using my version of grown-up Ahsoka in my game. So I am switching her out for older Asaj Ventress.
Bad luck my players.

Technically, it isn't copy/paste. It is clone or instance. It saves in a lot of things. Instancing a model eats up no new memory to hold the model in the scene. Also you can create textures that are based on instances to allow for slight differences (colors, surface distortion, etc...). What it really saves is the hours of time from the modeller and rigger to setup the new model
Well, even when i locked my suspension of belief up and re-watched the latest episode i still could not believe it. Again the only villain with more than 2 braincells was GM Tarkin, and of course Stormtroopers can't hit anything that has a name.
The nod to the clip Art attack was nice, but it reminded me again of the shown incompetence of anyone not a hero.
The resurfaced TIE/ln was nice, i did not believe them when they said they crashed it.
An electric bomb that fries half a Star Destroyer and knocks out about 39.000+ people? Yet miraculiously the TIE carrying it still works like a charm?
A group of Star Destroyers is neither capable of catching another SD by using their tractor beams, nor are they capable of going after a fleeing transporter (later group of corvettes).
And from a GM point of view:
You bring in Darth Vader to hunt down Kanan?
Do you want a total party wipe?
Finally got to see it: what a great season finale! Great writing, pacing, etc. I like the new Ahsoka model, looking forward to seeing her in action. (Her meeting Vader would be really stupid IMHO, so I can only hope the story writers refrain...but I really like the way Filoni thinks about these things, so I'm hopeful.) I like the evolution of all the characters so far: except for Zeb (who still seems to be along for the ride), they've all struggled and grown. And it's pretty clear that Hera and Kanan are "more than friends"...
Speaking of Hera, I thought it was interesting that when they met the stormtroopers at the elevator, she was the one who drew first and shot them all...that's the Hera from the book, and we haven't really seen her yet.
Technically I think there has been steady improvement. Expressions are great on the character's faces, really do convey more than words can say. And the background detail keeps improving, it all bodes well for season 2. Anybody else notice the phoenix-in-the-smoke in the beginning when they first stole the transport and piloted through the explosion? Nice touch...
lol, two opposing views within a minute...
An electric bomb that fries half a Star Destroyer and knocks out about 39.000+ people? Yet miraculiously the TIE carrying it still works like a charm?
All the other TIEs continued to work too, after being restarted, including the Inquisitor's TIE Advanced.
And from a GM point of view:
You bring in Darth Vader to hunt down Kanan?
Do you want a total party wipe?
The Emperor surely does...
From a technical point of view the episode was good. Lighting, animation (especially of the Inquisitors face up close to Kanans), sound, pacing ... i agree with whatfrog.
The more episodes they get done and things they can re-use the easier it is for the creators to go into detail.
What bugs me again from a GMs/nerds point of view is that the good guys win because their opposition is incompetent.
No real trouble in stealing an armed transport from a military installation. (I did see that smoke-phoenix)
All non-fighter ships seem to have a radio for galaxy-wide communication. Why not remove oneor two from shuttles and use it as a radio station on the ground to contact the fleet?
An on-the-fly made bomb from Sabine knocks out a SD and all the crew on it yet leaves the TIE intact? Any bomb that strong would melt/fry the TIE.
9700+ soldiers (Stormtroopers and Naval troops) trained in anti-boarding tactics are not capable of securing their ship? If that is too much make it happen on a smaller prison-transport or a space station.
And 4 other SDs are neither capable of going after the fleeing rebels or securing the descending SD? As a GM i would explain the first by letting the Imps secure their failing SD by catching it with their tractor beam batteries, and that several are needed to secure it in a stable orbit. But neither?
But no, the worst comes in the last scene:
Darth Vader himself comes to hunt down Kanan and his group.
Seriously, Vader will not stop until he has killed him. How do they want to avoid it? And that the second season is a constant running from a group of SDs?
Edited by segara82Segara82, could you please direct me to a current canon source that says a star destroyer has 39000 crew? The reason I mention this is that, perhaps star destroyers don't actually have that large of a crew. It was probably the craptacular old WEG books that that set the crew amount.
As for the innefectual bad guys, I'd this bothers anyone, perhaps this isn't the work of fiction for you. Perhaps a Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones) is more your style, where your favourite characters could die at any time.
Its a big galaxy and that group of Star Destroyers and Vader can't be everywhere.

I much prefer the Wild Cards series over Game of Thrones. Still potential for death, but lots of character growth before hand.

I love the franchise, but if we're being honest with ourselves, there has never been a Star Wars anything that didn't have a "plethora of problems". And that includes all three movies in the OT.
I'm inclined to give Rebels a little while to find its feet. Most series need at least a season.

Imperial II-class Star Destroyers have a crew of 37, 085. That being said there is no way the entire crew could or would be brought to bear on on a team infiltrating such a ship. Most crew would continue with their duties while special teams hunted them.
The show would be over in pretty short order if anyone actually got hit. So they dodge and avoid blaster hits. In game this is simulated by wounds and strain. Sure it makes the stormtroopers look goofish or keystoney, but to have expected anything different is kind of foolish. The Clone Wars had people getting hit and killed (if off-screen or with minimal bloodshed) because the clone troopers were cannon fodder, as they were the ones that took the most hits.

Agreed. 37,085 isn't that big in the grand scheme of things. A Nimitz class carrier carries what? about 6,000 people if you include the air wing? And it's only 1/5 the size of a SSD at best, with significantly fewer aircraft and it's practically unarmed when compared to what an SSD packs.
Factor in that much of the crew was either incapacitated or at battle stations and it's not like there'd be people roaming the halls. Last I checked when a ship goes to battle stations the crew has places they are supposed to be and jobs to do. And as a Spaceship I'll bet sounding battle stations or the ion blast also automatically closes at least some of the blast doors to compartmentalize the ship at least a little...
There's still some issues (You'd think there's be at least a few techs in the reactor room...) but I'm not as surprised that the rest of them could run around a little bit without being seen, or at least not by anyone who would care. It's possible that if say Zeb got spotted by a couple of the crew, knowing there was at least one nonhuman "special civilian advisor" on board the crewers would assume Zeb was he and go back to doing whatever their jobs are.

Indeed. Han scared off a small group of stormtroopers by yelling and running.
Yelling. And running.
It doesn't make sense, but it's super fun.

Around corners and with the backup firepower of a wookie... so it may have seemed like more than just two guys. Which is why, when the troopers got into a better position, they stopped running. This was retconned by Lucas putting more troopers in the open room in the Special Editions.
I cannot find during a quick search any new numbers for Star Destroyers and their personnel, so i can only go with the old numbers. I assume Disney/Filoni won't change them unless it is necessary.
37.085 men and women work on an SD I, and a legion/division of 9700 Stormtroopers serves there as well.
Of course they would work in shifts, so only about a 3rd would really be on duty.
Still 12.000+ people and 3233 Stormtroopers awake.
And reinforcements from the other SDs.
Again: If the numbers are too high simply choose another set for your rescue, like a smaller cruiser/corvette or a space station with far less people.
Now with that bomb, the alarm and all that ruckus, the question for me is less about how you avoid those already on duty but what do you do when you run into those that are off duty but have to react to the alarm/noise/shooting?
They could have thrown in a funny moment when let's say a crewmember still in his undies opens the door of his cabin, looks outside half asleep and asks the running heroes what the fuzz is about. Zeb knocks him out and locks the door. When Sabine/Hera tells him that that was rather nice he says 'C'mon! He was off duty.'
I know that from a producers point of view unnecessary extras like 'civilians' and technicians cost money and ressources so add as few as possible. For me that often ruins the suspension of disbelief. Not a single technician to check on the anti-matter reactors powering this vessel, especially after that surge?
As for GoT: I watched the first season, it was interesting, although if i want to watch porn (stars) i'll watch real porn.
How about a certain middleground? I don't mind the baddies loosing as long as it due to their mistakes and/or the heroes wit/abilities.
I mean we all know that Batman will always get the Joker in the end, but the ride between start and finish/arrest is usually a wild one with twists and turns and dead people.
Now i don't want resurrections like in DC/Marvel swapping into Star Wars, but people that matter dying or otherwise paying the price like Owen and Beru, most of Gold and Red Wing, ...
And bringing Vader into this ... unless they seriously downplay him he will rip the heroes a new one again and again until he gets Kanan. Vader does not tolerate mistakes.

When the ship calls for battle stations/general quarters the number on duty will go way up very quickly.

I don't get it. How can you get fussy about these issues and still be a Star Wars fan? None of it was any different from E4 and running around the Death Star.
Hey guys, probably best to just treat Harlock999 as the troll that it is and ignore it. Much like ErikB/Slypheed and evileeyore, it'll go away once it realizes nobody's going to dance to its tune.
Just looking at his posts, they're nothing but flame bait without a single constructive element.
Again, just ignore it and it'll eventually slither back under its rock.
Been gone a while...
But just curious? A "troll," in your definition is "one who disagrees with the majority regardless of whether that person lays out a series of bullet points that not only make sense, but are being ignored by the vast majority"...?
Okay, sure. *shaking head*
So a topic called "Thoughts on Star Wars: Rebels" is only supposed to draw in the flies that like the honey? Not the flies who are trying to point out that it might not be honey, folks, and is instead vinegar?
Again, okay.
For those of you claiming the first season of "Rebels" is WAY better than the first season of "Clone Wars?" I REALLY want to know what you're smoking. And then please ask you to get me in touch with your dealer. (Maybe then I'll be the good little poster that I'm supposed to be ... you know, according to Mr. Morningfire.)
Edited by Harlock999The TL,DR Translation....I hate the show and anyone else who doesn't agree with me is an idiot.
Not necessarily.
I do believe folks offering me rebuttals that don't hold water, ignoring some of the series' faults, and claiming it is better than "Clone Wars" are deluding themselves.
But... Those people who genuinely like "Rebels" and are connecting to the characters in some way? Or those who don't mind the gimmicky tech or kid-friendly characters and dialogue? Or those who like the idea of Jedi in hiding everywhere within the Star Wars universe between Episodes III and IV? And, finally, those who don't mind the slow burn of the series thus far? Hey, different strokes for different folks.
But don't try to sell yourself and everyone else on the line that "that cigar is not really a cigar."
Make sense?
