[SPOILERS]: Star Wars: Rebels - Thoughts?

By GM Hooly, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

The ending seems rather rushed "Hi I am Bail Orgnana" "Hi I am Asoska" "Ha ha, you were part of a rebel cell. Now you are not" 'Don't mind we totally blew everyones cover because you wanted to disobey orders to save Kannan"

That sounds like "They let us go, they're tracking this ship, so let's go straight to the Rebel base" ... so at least they're following a tradition :)

I wish Fulcrum's fleet had some more variety in it but that's a minor detail. I know CR-90s are really common craft at this point but it would have been nice to maybe see a couple of the smaller Republic navy ship classes or even a Corona Armed Frigate or two. I'm pretty sure the Corona Armed class will be appearing in season two because Hondo is appearing and in TCW his ship was a Corona Armed Frigate though I suppose he could be using a new ship now.

I'm guessing it didn't as it was easier to model 1 ship and just have multiple copies of it in the scene than making more, different types of ships.

While I can't say you are wrong, it does though, look a lot like her facial tattoo.

I found a different image of the adult Ahsoka that I like better, thanks to the rebelsreport.com website:

Screen%20Shot%202015-03-03%20at%2011.47.

Among other things, it’s easier in this picture to see that she is wearing some sort of Tiara that partially obscures her tattoos on her forehead.

Probably. I still think that having a more varied fleet would fit better with the rag tag nature of the rebels though

Probably. I still feel that a more varied fleet would fit with the ragtag nature of the rebels though, Like in the OT where all the Imperial capital ships you saw were types with similar design styles, while the rebels clearly had warships from a number of sources based on the wide variety of design styles

Well on the plus side, those models are made now, so the next rebel fleet attack could have a couple of new ships in it.

Something else I noticed re-watching the episode. They used the same "My name is Ahsoka Tano" line from the Clone Wars pilot movie when she met Anakin and Obi Wan for the first time after she came down the ladder to meet the crew of the Ghost.

Well at this point the Rebels really don't have a fleet. and likely that was a big portion of the ships the rebels have. And a common ship like the CR 90 means that it is hard to find them. Hiding specific needles in a needle stack as it were.

Yeah but the odds on every rebel cell that manages to get its hands on a capital ship getting one of the same class are almost nil.

Oh I don't know. Perhaps it's the AK-47 of capital ships. All you need is one reckless state or confederacy of planets to be willing to sell off all the old models of its fleet and suddenly it's what everybody uses.

I loved the finale...

It was true Star Wars in every sense. Light Saber battles, The Force, Space Battles, a "fleeing" compatriot returning to safe the day, plot twists and a quick getaway... Loved it.

Pros:

- (Since we've already stated SPOILERS) Ahsoka's back! Nice to see Filoni wants to tie this series in a little more closely to his far superior "Clone Wars" series.

- Vader is looking like he'll take the place of the incredibly stupid Inquisitor.

- These idiots are NOT the origin of the Rebel Alliance; they're just members of a Rebel cell.

Cons:

- Four individuals manage to break into an Imperial fortification, destroy an entire TIE fighter squadron, use their Scarlet Witch-like hex powers to make EVERY SINGLE stormtrooper miss them with blaster fire, steal a cruiser, sneak on board a Star Destroyer, evade all of the personnel within said Star Destroyer, and then escape the Star Destroyer. Yeah... (Recall Luke, Han, Leia, and Chewie barely escaped from the Death Star, lost one of their own, and then found out it was all staged so they COULD escape...)

- Lightsaber battle that looked more like a toy commercial - "Wheel-spinning, double-bladed action! Shoot stun blasts then switch to the slashing! It's a blaster AND a lightsaber! Plus, assemble your own lightsaber! Just attach these disguised components to fool your enemies! It's so fun, kids! Buy! Buy! Buy!"

- Ezra didn't die from the fall.

- The Inquisitor probably didn't die from the fall.

- A full season has passed and we still have no idea how any of these people got together. Other than Ezra, our entrypoint character. *sigh*

God, this show sucks.

But... I'll probably keep watching because I'm a Star Wars fan and hope to God the inclusion of Ahsoka and Vader - who I'd love to see meet again - might bring this series up in terms of quality storytelling and possibilities...

A single snubfighter destroys the most massive battle station in the galaxy. Twice. Care Bears take down an elite armored fighting force. Heroes cornered in a hallway with little cover have a conversation without getting hit by the team of Stormtroopers blasting away at them.

Toys being a large part of Star Wars is a surprise to you? Snubfighters with wings that pop open!

- Ezra didn't die from the fall.

Stressing the viewer with the thought a hero may have fallen? Indy didn't fall off the cliff. Young Kirk didn't fall off the cliff. Strider didn't fall off the cliff. Gandalf didn't die from the fall into the chasm of death with a demon wrapped around him. In Star Wars? R2D2 didn't die from the laser cannon blast. Leia didn't die when shot by the Stormtrooper. Luke didn't die from the fall (and he had an arm cut off to boot!). Han didn't die when frozen in carbonite. You are bashing Rebels for using one of the most used gimmics in story telling history.

Without EU, when did we finally get to know how Han and Chewie got together?

God, this show sucks.

Looks like its got Star Wars written all over it.

I know exactly how Hera and Kanan met , and best of all, it's canon.

I could have sworn Gandalf did die after the Balrog. Isn't that how he went from Grey to White?

I'm trying to read that book ... but reading SW novels has been painful ever since I read one too many of Troy Denning's molestations of SW. I'm trying though. Perhaps I'll bring it for the flight tomorrow.

So, I must say I was thrilled by the end of Fire across the Galaxy, and rather miffed at the choice of having such short episodes. This show could, I think, benefit from a few more minutes of stuff. It can seem rushed now, as they cram a lot of stuff into some of the episodes. Not that this is a new thing I guess.

Having watched the Rebel recon (links to youtube) on Starwars.com I'm getting excited about the future - which I guess is just the point about such preview stuff... once again sucked into the hype and vague promises about the stuff to come. EXCITEMENT! WAAAAAAAAH!!!

I have to say this to naysayers and fanboys out there. One of my former study mates loves this show. He's no SW fan as such, I mean I think I watched the films with him once, showed him some of the cooler (i.e. sort of re-watchable) TCW episodes and he jumped on the bandwagon. Still can't get him to try playing rpgs though ... but he loves this show, he liked TCW, but he suffered through the first two seasons (his own words, not mine!), but enjoyed Rebels from the get-go. Of course, this is anecdotal, so who really cares?

Anyway, the upcoming season seems more interesting, perhaps even to pessimists, naysayers and reactionists (TCWFTW!!!!1!1!) such as Harlock. The Ghost will apparently be travelling more and to new places, we will get into back stories of the crew, new characters are appearing, we'll see more of the rebellion, a new starfigher squadron is supposed to appear. It'll be cool! So, in other words, this first season, or half-season, was as many have said, a world building exercise, some prelude to the first act of the Rebellion-era. Setting up the team we'll follow.

Whereas the first season was a lot more EotE than AoR, it seems that with season 2 we'll get into stuff that'll fit the AoR bill more, starfighter squadrons, capital ships (albeit smaller ones from the brief glimpses showed in the video) and more military stuff basically. I doubt it'll remove itself completely from the EotE aspects, as that's an important part of the rebellion, I think.

I'm somewhat vary of Ahsoka. I hope they don't overuse her. I doubt they will, but you never know. She left the Jedi order, so I doubt she'll interfere too much with Kanan and Ezra, but I'm sure she'll meddle somewhat. I'm looking forward to that. That and her new white lightsabers

On another note, Kanan's shooty-shooty-slashy-shooty-stabby lightsaber fighting was pretty cool. Say what you will about toy-sales, silly lightsabers with cross-guards or spinning blades, the blaster/stun gun-lightsaber is actually a good idea - and one that I remember at least two players have suggested at different times over the last couple of decades.

Oh, and Sturn:

Gandalf didn't die from the fall into the chasm of death with a demon wrapped around him .

I could have sworn Gandalf did die after the Balrog. Isn't that how he went from Grey to White?

Gandalf is also an Istari, so he's kind of like an angel, no mere mortal... so if he died or just got a shiny white new vessel after a (relatively) quick return trip to Valinor, is a matter of definition I guess. And whether or not Istari can actually die or not.

God, this show sucks.

Heh heh. You know it is funny how tastes vary. While I find gems of episodes in the Clone Wars series, overall it does not impress me. Anakin is only somewhat better than his PT whiny version. And Ahsoka just makes me want to put a blaster bolt between her eyes. I sincerely hope that the only reason they have brought her on to Rebels is to give that "heroic sacrifice" action that so many were/are expecting for Kanan. Be it at Darth Vader's hands or whatever.

Nice. Makes me even more enthused to watch the next season, not that I already wasn't enthused. The first season laid some good groundwork for the future. Very much Star Wars for me.

Probably less her being a problem, and more her being the boss's daughter with the kings ear and skeleton key to the castle.

Sounds like working with George was always a little tricky. I read an article a while back where a former LucasArts employee said part of why the company was unprofitable toward the end was because the project managers preferred to just say "yes" instead of trying to figure out how to talk George out of a bad idea.

This is how I should have articulated it more specifically. Sorry for the delay, was running an ANR League night.

I can see the reaction to the Zilo Beast episodes… Man I hated those…

That just was so unstar wars it hurt.

Were those the ones with the "Godzilla" creature? If so then I agree.

Yup...

Ok, I'm not normally this kinda person, but it's bothering me...

Is there a reason why Kanan and Hera (who seem to be in a relationship) only hug? It seems really awkward in a few scenes. I don't need them to be sucking face in every episode or anything, but they seem like they'd be beyond the friendly hugging stage at this point.

I hate asking cause I just feel like....

They're not really in a relationship, yet at least. Kanan's kind of got the hots for her, but she's too preoccupied with fighting back against the Empire. It's very briefly mentioned

at the end of A New Dawn.
