The fighter swarm

By Hygric, in Star Wars: Armada

I know that we know almost nothing about this game yet, and don't even know if this would be possible or not, but...

What are peoples first thoughts about a list built 100% from fighter squadrons, without a big-ship to be seen?

Could be funny to fly against cap-ship heavy lists maybe.

I believe that the rules mean it would either be an instant win for the opponent, or utter madness given the limits on what fighters can do without capital ships to direct them.

Once there are no cap ships, game over...

Yep, once your side has no capital ships you loose. Fighters don't count.

You could always try this just for fun, but I'm not sure how effective it would be. I mean, you move your fighters into attack range and then you just sit there. Cap ships can pretty much just move right through your fighters before they even get a chance to shoot. Plus each of your opponents ships are getting a certain number of blue dice that they roll for each squadron. That could hurt if they have multiple cap ships and no other targets to shoot at.

You need cap ships of your own to order your fighters to move and attack and to present another threat to your enemy in order to reduce flak fire.

I think even if you brought limited caps and tons of fighters so you didn't auto-lose due to lack of caps you would still have some serious issues. In the case of bringing, say, one corvette plus fighters, your opponents would most likely chaff up your fighters and pound the corvette to death for the win.

Alternatively, you could ignore the cap to start out. In this case, you could chaff up the fighters and then flak them to death with your caps while they sit in a giant mosh-pit. This would be especially effective if you were rocking some escort Nebulon-Bs or an Assault Frigate, as they get a three dice pool against fighters. Freeze them with fighters, get them in arc, and then blow them to hell.

I like the idea that fighters can turn the tide, as in the Executor battle at Endor - but I do think there should almost always be some kind of large base ship. When I remember a group of fighters going up against a capship - such as in the X-Wing Rogue Squadron comic Mandatory Retirement, when 2-3 Y-Wing squads and 1 X-Wing squad plus a freighter or two went up against an Impstar Deuce and a dragship, they were only able to scare the ships into dropping the gravity wells so they could flee - even with the Y-Wing's munitions, they couldn't destroy even the smaller ship.

I would like to build on your post. I believe it is possible for a Corvette to be oneshotted, if not at long range by a Victory, at medium Range by a Vic 2 it would be. (3 Accuracy results from Blues, and 8 damage from a concentrated fire giving 4 reds) It would lead to what Lando would describe as "The shortest offensive of all time" Of course there would also be other Imperial ships firing at said corvette as well.

Long Story Short: This game is meant to be a capital ship engagement so you will need capital ships to do well, now of course Fighter heavy builds may indeed work but I would guess you need at least 2 Imperial ships or at least 4 Rebel Ships to stand a chance

Ah well, that idea won't work then. I'm not really surprised or upset at that tho. :D

Hmm... a fighter vs fighter game. Don't they call that X-Wing Miniatures? ;)

Given the really restricted capabilities of fighters in Armada, I think it would be a quick bout of dice rolling followed by removing models. There's no maneuvering to speak of, there's no fire arcs to dodge, so tactics would be virtually non-existent. It would be a battle of attrition and over very quickly.

It would also be rather dull, to boot.

The rebels ,in lore, manly tried to stick to a bomber to kill a star destroyer if I am thinking correctly

Unknown, while in the games and such you usually see bomber swarms taking on destroyers you don't see much of the day to day actions of the fleet just of a few well known characters. I know the WEG Rebel Alliance sourcebook mentioned a fleet actions where a group of tree rebel cruisers and support craft ambushed and defeated an Imperial fleet but pre endor fleet actions have nver gotten the attention that fighters have in the EU
