Tie swarm list critique for a tournament tomorrow, if you could be so kind :0)

By Terrorping, in X-Wing

So, I've settled on this list;

Doom shuttle w/ vader, EU and tactician.

4x BSP

howl runner.

Vague plan of action is to pick a ship, shoot the ties at it then vader it to death then move on to the next target.

Anything I should be wary of? Could do better?

Cheers chaps.

Mini swarm plus + something cool is a nice list type.

I personally wouldn't have the shuttle as the " something cool" option, simply because I prefer a HLC toting Krasis in that role ( or two bombers sometimes), but that's not to say the shuttle won't work.

I also might aim for at least one academy, blocking is fun.:)

If your not putting ept's on the blacks, maybe you should step them down to whatever is below them? It just seems a wasted opportunity.

I made a post about using this list. Its a strong fleet type, got me second in the nationals (with lady luck on my side mind you).

My post will tell you why I do not like Howlrunner as much in this type and why I settled for an extra ship. You will also find a simple drawing on how you could fly it. (iMO you need to fly swarms different due to the Phantom)

I'd drop one or more TIE fighters down to Academy pilots for both blocking shenanigans and to free up points to put swarm tactics on Howlrunner and possibly some of your BSP's.

Don't put Engine and Tactician on your destined to die shuttle. Use those points to give the Black squadron pilots some nice EPT.

At least one with Draw their fire to protect Howl.

Swarm Tactics on Howl and some of the other Backs is also suggestable.

I agree with this. I didn't notice the upgrades on the shuttle initially.

I would say that the formation swarm has a rather bad time against the Phantom... but I don't think you know about the Phantom Menace or you don't care.

Either way, as everyones said: Vader shuttles dont take extra upgrades. Fly slow from one side of the map and get shots in from as far as you can, keeping things in front of you.

I'd recommend you these choices, or just darn it all and do whatever you want (as it seems like you probably don't know the metagame)

Omicron Group Pilot (21)
Gunner (5)
Tactician (2)
Academy Pilot (12)
Academy Pilot (12)
Academy Pilot (12)
Academy Pilot (12)
Academy Pilot (12)
Academy Pilot (12)
Total: 100
Start the shuttle on the other corner from your ships, try and lure the opponent to attacking your ties and have them get caught in the arc of the Shuttle. Two stresses will gimp anything.
Focus fire Han.
Academy Pilot (12)
Academy Pilot (12)
Academy Pilot (12)
Academy Pilot (12)
Black Squadron Pilot (14)
Wingman (2)
Soontir Fel (27)
Push the Limit (3)
Hull Upgrade (3)
Stealth Device (3)
Royal Guard TIE (0)
Total: 100
This list gives you one PS9 pilot to try and catch Phantoms or other PS9s. Also has a lot of ships good for taking down Han.
If you go up against a Phantom with Rebel Captive, fly as best you can and have the Black with Wingman close to Soontir to remove his PTL stress.

Cheers guys, I've flown a traditional swarm against a phantom list and didn't have too many problems... Sods law will now kick in!

Some good points to consider, thanks again!

Omicron Group Pilot (21)
Gunner (5)
Tactician (2)
6 * Academy Pilot (12)

That looks really interesting. I just won a small 8 players tournament with 6 academies + buzzsaw shuttle but I was underwhelmed by the shuttle impact on the matches. The shuttle spends a lot of time without actions (standing still and bumping) to keep opponents in arc, so a passive effect like tactitian sounds promising.

It creates a big no go zone for phantoms, cripples the action economy of PTL ships and constrains the mobility of falcons all on a relatively resilient platform. What's not to like?

Phantoms die fairly easy IF you can hit them

I do quite like your build but like others have said drop the upgrades off the doom bus.

Or make it a buzzsaw. (= EU, gunner, FCS)

Howlrunner will be the obvious first target for your opponent so plan for that.

You could put draw their fire on one or two blacks. Put a shield on her perhaps

Try Advanced sensors and EU sometime. **** fun combo.

It means you can boost then do the hard 2. Makes the shuttle quite mobile.

It also stops it from losing its actions.

Gotta love it

Buzzsaw is just Gunner and FCS. EU has nothing to do with the Buzzsawing.

Thats why a doomshuttle works so well with obsidian. It bumps and keeps distance by short moves and not having an action is not so bad as his function is mainly to finish off ships with Vader.

Looks good to me. Except, definitely drop one BSP to an AP for Swarm Tactics om Howl, as mentioned above.

That's a fun looking list.

Makes me think, OGP + Adv Sensors + Engine + Tactician would be fun.

To me, if you're gonna run a Doomed Shuttle, you spend no more points on it then you have to. I would run something like this, if you have a love for the Space Cow:

Howlrunner
Backstabber
1X Obsidian Squadron Pilot
2X Academy Pilots
1 Shuttle w/Vader

This is 95 points, do with what you will the final points. I like the two academy pilots just for the blocking.

It has been mentioned but I agree there are too many upgrades on the Doom Shuttle.

Thanks all for the advice, I'll have a jiggle and let you know how it goes tomorrow !

I'll have a jiggle...

I sure hope that means "adjust my list" rather than being a euphemism for something else*.

*Because in that case you really ought to leave the miniatures out of it. They have uncomfortably pointy bits.
