I am trying to find a cheaper alternative to battle foam, and something that will accomidate a transport and a tantive iv. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
So is the Plano 732 considered to be the "Mac-Daddy" Storage?
Plano 1374 you will next to cut the Tantive clamshell but it fits mine
I've got one of the smaller Planos (5231?) and it's been great. Looking to move up soon as I've filled it!
I filled a 1364, and moved up to a 732. It's a bit unwieldy, but does a nice job of keeping all the stuff together.
I say foam is best.
If your really wanting to be cheap grab a tool box and chuck in ya ships (still in the clam packaging)
Or if you want to be a bit more fancy and organized then go down to a hardware store and organized get a nuts and bolts organizer.
The Plano 1374-01 is the way to go. It holds everything I own (approx. 58 ships), less my pilot and upgrade cards. I keep those in 3-ring binders.
my Battle foam 720 accommodate TWO transports one tantive. about 10 Bs 8Ys 8 As 10Xs 3 Falcons 4 space cows, 5 crows, and about 6 of every other imperial ship... oh and 8 zs...
Edited by SwedgeEver notice how you see lots of people saying "I bought XXX (~$40) Plano, then outgrew it and bought YYY (~$60) Plano"? Just save yourself the trouble, quit trying to go cheap when in the long run you are going to end up paying the same or more, and buy a bag with foam.

True. What caught me was that I didn't expect my (admittedly modest) collection to grow at the rate it has.
But it creeps up on you. Go bigger than you think you need.
I have a BattleFoam sword bag of the pick'n'pluck variety
Holds everything in my Sig apart from the 3 epic ships. I never planned for them sadly
Plenty of room to spare.
I did look at getting a planio case but they are quite expensive here in NZ.
*Also holding 3 E's, 4 Z's, 3 Defenders and 4 phantoms.
Been to lazy to update my Sig
Battlefoam 3 1/2" pluck foam tray and a banker's box. I have both my Tantive and Transport, and all the extra bits and accessories for them in it.
Plano 1374 is much better than the 732.
I bought the Plano 1374 for my Warhammer stuff and used that for a while. I've gotten Sabol foam for other game systems, but foam gets expensive. For all the different games through the years to get the foam to store it all? Way too expensive. I just moved my Warhammer stuff into deep storage and repurposed for X-wing. The 1374 so far holds everything, including the Tantive IV in the top. I've been worried about the Rebel Transport as I don't think I have room, but I didn't realize that the Lambda Shuttle and Falcon can fit in a regular Plano tray. So, I can probably fit it....I think.
The Plano trays are just great for dealing with these ships. Most of the time I can leave them on the stand and they are ready to pull out whenever I want.
Problem with suggesting going straight for foam, is that Plano is really versatile, while foam is not. Really, these minis are plenty durable to not require foam if you don't wish to use it.

If someone ever took my bag and said I could only use Plano, I'd give up X-Wing. I'm hyperbolizing only a little.

Or, do get planos, but get the single trays. When you need more space add a tray. I have everything I own in six trays, with a tower carrying strap holding them and my card binder togeather.
I have a palano 732 and a dremal havent found anything i cant store. Granted i donthave any epic ship. My friend carries his tranport in hi. The corvett is the only one he cant get in.
It is completely customizable and flexible in dozens of ways Plano is not. Planos give you some options, but it is pretty much just different sized buckets. I've used both. One is clearly superior and it is foam.
You can't reuse the foam unless you find something very similar to it for another game. I've got foam and I prefer to use Plano for X-wing. I don't prefer Plano for all my games, but it's clearly superior to expensive foam in my humble opinion. I had it for my Warhammer and just repurposed it. It can be used for a lot of games, while the foam can not.
The Plano 737 is the cheaper alternative to the 1374. It is very versatile, with top storage for all tokens, tray storage for small ships, and two added benefits: the lower right compartment and middle compartments are large enough to store both small and large ships in their original plastic blisters.
This is what I use and they work great!

I've looked at all the planos before taking a plunge and with the 737, the cheapest I found was about $45 + S/H while amazon has the 1374 for about $10 less with free S/H.
Another reason I chose 1374 is largest case that gives you 4 3750 cases while can hold all large ships and the divide locations are much more flexbile than the drawers in the 737. Another reason it wasn't for me is that the trays themselves don't have a top so with a single 3750 I can always fit my tourney list and it fits perfectly in my camelpak with food and water. Another point is the 3750s are interchangeable with the 3700 cases. The 737 does have it's uses but for that tackle box style I would go with the 7771 which is large and has 4 of the 3701 trays, with the same top storage that can fit a calmshelled transport or a Tantive though you made need a dremel if you wanted to fit both but since the 7771 is the highest price of the 3 imho the 1374 is the best bang for your buck.
The 1374 must be selling in much greater volume because the 737 used to be cheaper.
One thing to be mindful of with the 1374 is that some only have the 3700 trays instead of the 3750 (the 3700 trays do not have the larger slots up front that the 3750 trays do). The 732 still has 3750 trays as part of the bundle, so it can carry the larger ships.
However, I got lucky when I went to the store recently to get a 1374. The store had three in stock, two had the 3700 trays and the other had the 3750 trays. I took the last one with the 3750 trays and went straight to the register.

I guess I bought mine around 9 months ago.

Didn't know that, I did notice that walmart has them for $5.47 each so if any one need 1 or more 3750s you can swap them out with the 3700s.
Agreed. It is nice to be able to buy the trays separately and swap them out. However, it is a bit inconvenient that Plano stopped putting the 3750 trays in the 1374.
