Another Newbie "What to get" Topic

By Monkeyshine77, in X-Wing

Hey everyone. I am very new/green to X-Wing. I only played 1 game at a friends house. After that one game I became hooked and went about trading in a bunch of old games I never play (Hero Quest w/ expansions, World of Warcraft BG, MonPoc, ect) to get enough store credit to be able to build a somewhat impressive fleet for a newb. I am investing in Empire and Rebel ships as I am expecting to have to provide all the ships for the majority of my games, and because I am rather OCD when it comes to collecting.

So here is the list of what I have so far or what is already in transit...

1) 2 copies of the core game

2) Imperial Aces

3) Rebel Aces

4) 1 A-Wing

5) 1 B-Wing

6) 1 Y-Wing

7) 1 Tie Intercepter

8) 1 Slave 1

9) 1 Falcon

I have a list of things I will be getting when the rest of my store credit comes through in the next day or two that I know they have in stock.

1) 1 Tie Fighter

2) 1 Tie Advanced

3) 1 Lamda Shuttle

4) 2 Tie Bombers

5) 2 Tie Defenders

6) 2 Tie Phantoms

7) 1 X-Wing

8) 1 Y-Wing

9) 1 A-Wing

10) 1 HWK-290

11) 1 B-Wing

12) 1 E-Wing

13) 3 Head Hunters

14) 1 Rebel Transport

15) 1 Tantive IV

This would give me at least 2 of all of the small ships with the exceptions of the Tie Advanced, HWK-290, and E-Wing. One of my local gaming stores has alot of the hard to find ships (A-Wings, Intercepters, ect) and I have enough extra to pick up another 2-3 small ships, or another Firespray or Falcon.

From what I have read I will be fine with 1 Tie Advanced, and HWK290. The E-Wing I am on the fence about. It is one of the ships I used during my first and only game so far, and it did right by me. But with the point cost I wonder if I would ever feild more than one when I will have 3 A-Wings and B-Wings to choose from.

So My first question is, does my list of things look reasonable? If not what would you change and way? With the extra credit I have should I pick up a 3rd Y-Wing, and another small ship like a 4th intercepter, or should I get a 2nd Firespray, or go with ultimate cheese and get a 2nd Flacon?

Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome to the forum!

Your list looks very comprehensive, getting at least one of everything is a great way to build a variety of 100 point lists. Once you have played some games with them you may then decide to get more multiples of a certain craft. I also went overboard with buying and have 3 core sets which gives enough dice to play with for 2 people. The value of the core set is excellent and it helps boost your TIE fighter numbers so you can field a thematic TIE swarm. So if you don't get a 3rd set then maybe just a dice pack will see you right.

If you have an Andriod phone there is a free app called X-wing Companion made by Guido Kessels. It lists everything about the game from movement dials, to stats, to upgrades slots and point costs. It can sort by ships/upgrade type. It also shows where a pilot or an upgrade card can be found. It also list by packs so you can tell what you are going to get before you buy. I find it helpful a lot.

It looks like you are mostly a rebel player because your imperial list is considerably lacking in comparison. However I would recommend a shuttle. Even for a rebel player because of upgrades such as advanced sensors can boost the effectiveness of High Skill B-wings and make it so they can practically turn on a dime.

I could see a 2nd Imperial Aces and a 2nd Rebel Aces being helpful.

I am trying to avoid having too many ships for side. Would I be better off going with a second Firespray, or a 3rd Phantom and Defender to balance the factions out? I was mainly focusing on the Rebel ships as most of them seem to be harder to find at the moment thinking it would be easier to fill out the Imps later on.

Had not thought about getting doubles of the Aces. That would be an option as my local gaming store has those too. Would it be better to get those rather than the 2nd A and B wings? Of course then I will want to have 6 A-wings to take advantage of the refit upgrade :P

You want at least one of each expansion. So if you don't have any A's or B's yet, I'd recommend a Aces pack and a A-Wing and a B-Wing. That way you have all the upgrades.

Moar TIE Fighters!!!1

I'd agree that the way expansions are marketed it makes 'having ships you like' counter productive to being 'able to field what you want' as certain cards only come with certain ships.

I have an e wing and a defender i will probably never use purely because cards i did want to use came with them.

On a side note i hope your store gave you *seriously* good credit for heroquest and the expansions as i think it goes for quite a lot on ebay, the expansions particularly.

Thank you for all of the advice so far. On a side note I did get close to $400 for my trade-ins. I only had 2 of the Hero Quest expansions and they were the more common ones. I will consider getting another core set a little later down the road. I have been reading posts about people ending up with with like 6 of each of the small ships and 3-4 of the larger. I have resigned myself to the fact that this will more than likely be me within a year or so.

Keeping this in mind what sort of relatively cheap storage ideas do you all have. I have seen posts about Plano products and they seem very efficient. Is there a product out there that would hold all/most of what I am going to be getting? I know the Tantive IV can be a pain to store but it would be great if there was something reasonably priced that could store all of the ships. The foam is just too expensive :-(.

I got this guy at walmart on sale once, and it fits the collection listed in my sig, including the tantive and transport

I didn't see a YT-2400 (Outrider) or VT-49 Decimator in your list of pre-orders.. Those will also be ships to get, and they'll be available shortly.

As for what you have already, it looks good. At least 2 of each ship (more TIE's and Z-95's for swarms). The more you have, the more you can do. There are still some upgrade cards that ONLY come with certain ships. As someone suggested, the X-Wing companion app is great for showing what comes with each ship. For Example - The R2 Astromech only comes with the Y-Wing expansion. It's a great card. Squad Leader only comes with the Advanced etc.

As far as being a "newbie" and asking "what to get" I'm guessing your orders have already met or exceeded many peoples collections. You may be missing the extras needed for a few squadrons but your possibilities are already endless.

I'm in a similar situation as you, TC, in that I just got into the game and did a bunch of selling/buybacks to get some store credit quickly. With it, I purchased:

Core

Falcon

Firespray

Lambda

Y-wing

X-wing X2

Defender

Advanced

TIE Fighter X2

Z-95 X3

B-wing

A-wing

Rebel AcesX2

E-wing X2

TIE Bomber X2

Imperial Aces

TIE Interceptor X2

HWK

I will also be pre-ordering Decimator/YT-2400X2 once another batch of store credit comes in. I will also pick up a Rebel Transport at that time, which seems to have a lot of great X-wing cards and Astromechs in it.

I made my decisions with the goal of getting as much upgrade variety as possible, as well as enough ships to play what I like, Rebels mostly.

Defender doesn't seem like it is costed right to have a squad with more than one, but that's just my impression.

I didn't get a Phantom because I refuse to play cheaply or deliberately competitively.

There are quite a few 2 defender builds that work quite well but you'd struggle to get three to work well below epic.

you will probably want that second firespray-31. not just because 2xbounty hunter + fel (or other flanker) is an awesome list, but also scum and villainy is coming and you (or someone you are flying with) may want to field Boba as scum while the imps are using Kath or Krassis.

edit: if you look at my signature, you can see the choices I have made in building my fleets..... I think you may have more, but there are a few variations.(ie. I have not gotten any huge ships)

I am really torn now. Fire Sprays are so hard to find and won't be reprinted until quarter 4 which typically means quarter 1 or 2 of next year the way FFG moves. But I just got Imperial Aces in the mail today and am now wondering if I would he better off with them since they are becoming harder to find as well. Some the the upgrades with the Fire Spray make it hard to choose between the two.

If I got another set of Imperial Aces that would give me 5 interceptors total. How viable are 5 interceptor lists? Are they more or less viable than 2 Fire Spray builds? Which build is more enjoyable to play?

I have never run 5 interceptors, but I did get 2 imperial aces so that I could fly 4xroyal guard pilot+ptl......the rgp and titles alone make imperial aces worth it.

my favorite casual list is 2x bounty hunter and soontir fel+ptl+targeting computer.......

I do understand your frustration with availability also....(I have been trying to get 2 more a-wing expansions for a while) it may be some time before another firespray is available at a reasonable price.

Note that you can't actually field 5 interceptors with 2 Imperial Aces and 1 Interceptor expansion because FFG chose not to include the Avenger and Alpha Squadron pilots in Imperial Aces.

There is some package interdependency but a note is that each upgrade card can be used with the ship the package came in. So I don't call it a total rip off. Even C-3PO can be used with the CR-90. If the CR-90 is being attacked by a primary weapon at range 3 or greater if if it is CR-90 vs CR-90 than C-3PO can be used as the CR-90 will get defense dice.

When I would call it unfair is if they give you say a Y-wing pilot in a core set without a Y-wing or proton torpedoes in a Tie Advanced pack. Now they do give Firespray-47 and HWK-290 pilots in the Most Wanted pack but that is a conversion set made for people who are likely to already have their own HWK-290 and Slave 1 packs.
