Using the Talent Tree

By GM Hooly, in General Discussion

Hi All,

This is probably a stupid question, but under the Niman Disciple Specialisation, it has several talents which sit by themselves (i.e. Parry , Reflect and Grit ) on the top tier. If a character wanted to get the Parry talent from tier 2, would they need to follow the line of talents from the Nobody's Fool talent onwards in order to get it, or is it a case that once you have a single talent from the top tier, you may start at any open talents (i.e. the start of the tree) in the second tier?

Start from the top and follow the lines to access talents after the first row.

The only talents you can take without restriction are those in the 5 XP Row.

Any talent on later rows/tiers, you need to have purchased another talent that is directly linked to it by a black line.

So if they wanted the Parry talent that's in Column 1/Row 3, they'd have to purchase Nobody's Fool, followed by Niman Technique, then either Defensive Training or Sense Emotioins, and then the could purchase that instance of Parry. Or if the wanted the Column 4/Row 2 instance of Parry (which is connected to Row 3's Defensive Training, they'd have to go Nobody's Fool to Niman Technique to Sense Emotions to Reflect to Defensive Training and then to Parry.

Going from Grit in Column 4/Row 1 to Parry in Column 4/Row 2 doesn't work because there's no connecting line between the two.

So basically: up and down the tree we go :)

Yep.

Are you able to go back and purchase defensive training even if you purchased sense emotions? Can you purchase every talent in the tree giving enough exp over time?

Here is a quote from the CRB regarding the purchase of talents. It is found on page 93 (character creation section, under the step, "Invest Experience Points") in the Edge of the Empire core book. I assume this exact passage is also in the Force and Destiny book:

Note that the choices on each tree are connected by a series of lines that link some talent choices with others. Characters may only purchase talents for which they are eligible. Characters are eligible to select any talents in the first, topmost row, plus any talents that are connected via one of the aforementioned links to a talent the character has already acquired.

Try not to picture your character being at a certain position on the talent tree. It is not a system where you move from one position to the next, snaking through the talents, like a board game. Instead, you have a series of talents that you own on the tree. You can purchase any talent that is connected to a talent that you already own.

You can always (with enough xp) purchase all of the talents on a tree, regardless of how you decided to attack it initially.
