I just had an exciting thought - reckon we'll see YT1300s, Firesprays and Lambdas in Armada (as fighter squadrons, presumably, although I'd expect just one model, maybe)? I hope so, for coolness, but I hope not for my bank statement!
X-Wing Large Ships
This has been discussed a bit in other threads, and who knows--maybe we will see something like that.
Personally, I hope that we don't see them, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if we do. I guess I have a few concerns. Taking a YT-1300 as an example, it just doesn't feel right to have them fly in squads in the fleet, as they are individual light freighters and even if they were in a convoy I doubt they would hang around major battles very often. One alone would lack sufficient punch to equal an entire squadron, so it might be difficult to really get it right from a balance perspective as well. They just don't really have much of a place at the fleet level, as they are too small to go up against the caps, and they can't rival fighters on their own.
And please, nobody quote the Bacta War at me. That was an exception, and took severe mitigating circumstances (and a TON of money and modification) in order to make a bunch of freighters even remotely respectable as a fighting force. I guess flying a hundred tiny freighters around was a gimmick that I don't care to repeat on the tabletop.
I think we will see respective mission tokens for the Lambda and the YT-1300, like the Senator's Shuttle in the X-Wing Starter Set ...
I don't see a reasonable impact which squadrons of one can make in the game, esspecially capital ships traget squadrons in bulk during shooting. But without the clear rules on squadons all that is just speculation.
Edited by 0rph3u5You may find them as squadron leaders, possibly not a model, but maybe on an upgrade card. Personality and special skill perhaps. Who knows? If FFG would throw us bone maybe we'd have something more to go on.
Well, in the case of the YT-1300, you could have a Battle of Endor style model released as a part of specialty squadrons? The Falcon flanked by a pair of X-wings or A-wings?

Yeah, I could go for something like that.
I could see shuttles working even as squadrons of one - they would not be there for firepower effects but rather to buff/debuff other ships and fighters.
As an example, I could imagine a shuttle with intelligence agent that allows you to look at the top dial of an enemy ship's command stack. Actually, the shuttle would be good for this as you would only need one shuttle miniature, but could have a wide range of cards representing it being configured for different roles and passengers.
Squadrons of one sounds about right to me.
I'm hoping we don't see Firesprays, not for the Empire at any rate. Bobba was an iconic adversary to the Falcon but they were hardly standard imperial equipment. No, I'd rather see the Delta-class JV-7 Escort shuttles occupy that same space. Powerful forward attacks and with a functioning rear turret.
Lambdas are a joke when thrown into combat.
I seriously don't expect too much variation from what they've shown us already. This game is about capital ship combat, and I think the main focus is going to be there. I'd be really surprised if they bother with shuttles. You've got to remember a squadron is supposed to be about 12 starfighters. An ISD carries about 8 Lambda shuttles, and even if you can field them as a squadron, I think their combat stats would be pretty lame when compared to the starfighters.
I think there is a better likelihood that you might get an upgrade card that may have a shuttle added as an "escorted" ship that may boost a squadron's capability somehow. There is a Luke Skywalker card and a Howlrunner card that do this, so although we may not see a model, there's still a possibility of a shuttle/YT-1300/Firespray upgrade.
As a stand alone model for scenarios objectives, I could definitely see that working.
As one model with two fighters to make a combat effective squadron, heck yes. I can see a lambda flanked by two ties or a YT flanked by an x-wing and an a-wing easily.
And as a stand alone model that can't shoot worth a **** (1 dice vs fighters and none vs ships) but could have potent effects on other squadrons and maybe even ships, great idea!
As a blister pack with the rules, models, basing options and cards to provide all three ways of using them, OH YEAH!!! I would buy that.
Definitely no firesprays for the Empire in this game tho, Gamma boarding shuttles would be much more thematic and fun! Could be a simple ship rules-wise. If it makes it into base to base contact with an enemy ship, do some sort of damage ignoring shields to the ship then remove the Gamma from the board. Or maybe remove one command token from the ship to reflect the disrupting rather than lethal nature of the attack.

This would work and make sense. The YT is a squadron leader (with a couple X-wings) giving you yet another type of squadron with some specific upgrades only for that squadron.
Each class of ship has some very iconic representatives, and FFG would be silly to exclude these as they would be cash cows.
YT1300 with a couple xwings.
Tie Advanced with a couple tie fighters
Firespray with a couple M3-As
YT2400 with a couple Z95s/A-wings
Lambda with a couple ties
They could do an iconic light freighter pack that has all these unique squads that have specific upgrades for only those ships (including unique pilots).
I like all these ideas
