Wow... like it a lot...
Shuttle Repaint - Black and Red
Thanks for all of the kind words. It's really nice when a plan comes together and this one really came together for me.
To answer the main question: The symbol is not free-hand. I'm getting better with free-handing, but I'm not there yet by a long shot. No, the truth is that a while back I picked up a Silhouette Portrait specifically to cut masks and stencils (and the occasional thin piece of plastic for scratchbuild projects) and it's quickly becoming one of my favorite tools in the shop.
I recently used it to cut tiny masks for camouflage on my Dropzone Commander models (10mm scale). My experiments have shown me that it's not quite up to the task of 8pt fonts, but other than that it can do a lot.
I'll have a video up by the end of the week (fingers crossed).
So it cuts a stencil out of multiple types of material, that would be awesome to have it cut stencils on sticker paper, then you just apply that to the model and then paint it.. I've been beating my head on how to do that, didn't know there was a device like this that does it for you..
Now to save my money to get one... lol..
Edited by onewayI knew all the scrapbooking stuff at my house would come in handy some day.

It's always a good idea to give some thought to the "other" tools and supplies you might have around the house and consider how they might apply to your primary hobbies. ![]()
Now that's a tool I need..

Not only that, if you're into papercraft terrain, many of the papercraft companies will include files that can be read by the software so that you can get the machine to accurately cut and score the paper buildings for you leaving you to just fold and glue them.
Nice..
Now isn't this ironic, the ship has become background noise, while the real star seems to be the cutting machine. ![]()
On a more serious note, I can certainly see myself using a Silhouette Portrait. The problem for me will be getting it at a reasonable cost. My dear sweet home is located in Sweden and a machine like that will set me back the equivalent of about 320$.

Look around. Silhouette isn't the only one out there (although I think that they're the best of the ones that I looked at). There might be a more economical alternative in your area.
Edited by DullsporkI got some work done on my painting video for this last night. I need to record some voice-over and do final edits. I'm hoping that I can have it done by Sunday night.
very nice
Very nice paint job on the shuttle, and the paint job on the interceptor is well done too.
BTW has the OP fallen out with Magic the gathering or something?

Interesting question. Why do you ask?
Once again, Jay, you have outdone yourself with this shuttle.
Also, I have been hand cutting free hand stencils for years, never even thought about a Silhouette Portrait.
Finished editing the video. Enjoy!
That looks awesome... A great ship to be escorted by royal guard interceptors! What would you charge for a commission?
Jeez, looking through your website... Wow. Love that set of Doom figures:)
Sucks.
I'm jealous.
._.
The shade transition in the wing panels and the canopy make me want to flip my work table.

But if you watch the video you can see how simple this is to do.
Very nice job. <thumbs up>

Not everyone is a wiz with the airbrush.. in more that 40 years of modeling, I've never used one...
If I could get my hands on a couple more albino manatees, I might try my hand at it. I need some stencils from that clever device you used for the cogs on the sail on this one... that would help emensly.. I have a few ideas for shuttles still in my brain, I thought would be kinda cool...
We shall see though, maybe someone will jump on my trades.. lol.. if I could get a couple manatees for my 2 core sets I'd be tickled.. or for the Imp Aces... I'm too broke right now for spending on this hobby...

Wow... you might actually be older than I am. But I'm not certain.
Aibrushes are not that hard to use. The stuff that I did on the shuttle (with the exception of the engine glow) is something that pretty much any first-timer should be able to accomplish.
Edited by Dullsporkhahaha.. I just turned 50..
I know they are upposed to be pretty easy to use.. I just haven't really used one. I do have access to one these days, just found my old ways worked fine.. I still use spray cans and hand paint everything I've done so far, including my WWI Wings of Glory/War Bi-planes.. lol I have a bunch of those I need to put on Ebay.. I just don't play it anymore..
Admittedly, your videos do make it look easy and I appreciate that. You explain well, and you don't make it seem too hard to do..

You ARE older than I am. Though not by much. I just turned 48.
If anybody is looking for some similar stencils, shoot me a PM. I've already had a few requests so I might as well put the offer out there in general. Prices are reasonable.
Can this machine also cut out plasticard? What materials did you try yet? Paper, thicker paper, Plasticard, that ultra mask in your video ... I'm amazed that it can also cut vinyl .. what is the max thickness o vinyl it can cut? I'd like to have re-usable stencils and maybe use plasticard or that. Did you try that yet?

My own experiments are limited, though I have tried a variety of materials with the Silhouette. You can do plasticard, but it has to be pretty thin. Luckily, you want it to be thin if your goal is to create reusable stencils. I prefer adhesive stencils, but I could see doing the plasticard ones under the right circumstances.
I've also done card stock. I made some nice Palm Trees using the cutter (link1, link2). There are a lot of guys out there starting to use it as a cheap alternative to a laser cutter and doing some fairly impressive things with it.
