Fourth faction: confirmed

By xanderf, in X-Wing

From FFG's recent RPG press release .

As you can plainly see, the RPG already has 3 factions exactly word-for-word identical to X-Wing's...with a fourth being "Citizens of the Galaxy".

Obviously , this is the next faction. I absolutely commend FFG for this, too - it's visionary! And there are worlds of newly-possible play modes it will open up...

  • Heroically pilot your unarmed freighter on a straight line through open space...hopefully avoiding capture (sorry, "liberation") by Rebels...or lawful detainment by Imperials for speeding...or enslavement by Scum and Villainy... while not actually able to take any action or do anything about that EXCEPT 'hope'!
  • Peacefully protest the violence in the galaxy by silently "sitting in" and watching Rebel and Imperial starfighters dogfighting nearby - carefully taking no action to indicate a side or preference other than protesting the senselessness of the war!
  • Stoically serving beer and food at local cantinas to Rebel *or* Imperial forces, while being dreadfully cautious about saying anything around them - as you can't actually tell them apart , and you don't want to risk offending them by mis-identifying them as their enemy!
  • Grimly commiserating with the wounded, at nearby pubs after a battle, offering support and condolences without knowing the extent of the struggles they had seen, whether they had even won to the extent-hoped-for...or lost miserably...just knowing a battle had been hard fought in orbit, and they survived it!

(And I so totally have been trying - without any success at all - to introduce my wife to the game through one of the other three factions...I'm optimistic this new faction will finally be the ticket!)

Seems legit.

It wouldn't surprise me if thus was true later down the line.

If there were more roleplaying aspects to this game, it would be totally awesome to have civilian ships. However, it seems to be pretty much just a game of competition.

Interesting, but I don't think it's going to happen. It' makes sense for a role playing game to have citizens, but I don't think it makes sense in a spaceship dog-fight game. I having trouble thinking of ships and pilots for this.

So they'll have chiss?

So they'll have chiss?

No, they will not.

I suppose anything is possible. I mean, I didn't see the Scum faction coming at all, my money was on a two faction game for the duration.

Having said that, I don't see the appeal of this faction. At least with Scum there are characters that fans enjoy that we can finally see on the table, such as every bounty hunter you can think of.

But with Citizens of the Galaxy ? Who the hell would be an anticipated pilot?

The ice cream guy from cloud city?

I'm pretty sure Chiss just got confirmed in the OP

Shhh...it's a sooper-seekrit, but I have some snapshots of a few of the minis they are already working on for this faction...

I would like to see imperial huge ships first and to see how the newest faction fares in combat.

So they'll have chiss?

No, they will not.

Booo!

It is the Chiss' destiny to be erased from the canon.

Yeah, I'm not quite sure how I would envision noncombatants being fielded in a game about combat.

So let me get this straight... we've got the Imperials, the Rebels, the outlaws making up Scum & Villainy... and now the fourth faction is EVERYBODY ELSE!?

Did you pay money for that? How many points is it? When was the last time you played it at a tournament?

"So my luxury yacht attacks your Tie fighter with 0 dice. Now my pod car is in range one, so if I start at 0 attack do I get a range bonus?"

Will any of them be a legit counter to a Fat Han though?

I think it's granted that most of this game is about that combat, and that much of the X-Wing community is aimed at tournaments as being the highest level of play. I also don't think that FFG is going to spend its resources developing material outside of the competitive-and-balanced format.

That said, there's no need to be snide about the desire of many people (myself included) to have this game be about a lot more than that.

I do think there's room for overlap between roleplaying and tabletop battles. I've already spent countless hours devising an online engine that facilitates just that. Unfortunately, it seems to be the casualty of time constraints, and I haven't worked on it for a month at least. :(

1) No. Came in the starter set - great value! (couldn't find a pic of just the token).

2) It's 0pts. You get it free when you play Mission One as the rebels.

3) I've never been to a tournament.

Will any of them be a legit counter to a Fat Han though?
It's amazing against Fat Han - 6 HP, 6 SP, 2 evade dice (3 at range 3) and if it makes it to the enemy edge you auto-win. Also, any friendly ship at range 1 can sacrifice an action to give it an evade token.
Kicks the crap out of Fat Han. Possibly OP.

Combining roleplaying and tactical is always a blast when it works. When i created my first Corvan ship it was an unarmed wreck for the first few games having barely escaped an Imperial planetary bombardment. The gradual build up to an effective smuggler and finally combat vessel was part of the joy. Giving quite the thrill to finally being able to turn the tableso n all the ships we originally had to run from. But with that being said im not sure how much fun it would have been if the ship had never become armed and effective. Roleplaying is fun but i like ship combat

I having trouble thinking of ships and pilots for this.
