Carnor Jax - Free Action Phase

By Rottenreason, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I played against a friend who explain the rule of Carnor Jax I believe incorrectly. Low pilot score pilots move first, they move within range 1 of Jax. His way says those ships no can not preform their free action b/c they are within range 1 of Jax. Even though Jax hasn't moved yet. He was assigning free actions to his ships after they moved. Which I think breaks the Movement, Free action, Combat, and End phase round.

However, I believe this is incorrect. I think it should be. All ships preform their movement phase. No ships should begin taking free actions until the movment phase is over. If Jax ends up in range 1 of any enemy ships those ships can not preform a Focus or Evade action.

Of course I'm not sure so I'm seeking your help :)

Hello! In response to your question, the short answer is that your friend is right.

The long answer is that there are not two separate movement and action phases. It is one phase called the Activation phase. During these phase each ship, in order of lowest PS to highest PS executes a maneuver and then immediately performs an action after completing this maneuver. Because of this, those ships that move within range 1 of Carnor Jax before he moves still cannot take a focus or evade action.

Thank you that makes perfect sense. I thought it was all ships move and once the movement phase is complete then all ships preform their free action.

Basically when you want to do the focus/evade action or when you want to spend a focus/evade token is when you measure the range to Jax, irrespective of whether or not Jax has yet to move.

You could move a ship into range 1 of Jax and be prevented to do a focus action, Jax could move away later, and your first ship could get a free action from another game mechanic, and would now be able to perform a focus action.

Each ship moves and takes its perform acion step in turn. If a ship is at range 1 of Jax, they can't take focus or evade actions and will have to choose a different action.

After Jax has moved, the range 1 to Jax will change so those ships now out of range could use any passed free action to choose focus or evade as their free action and any ships that are now in range 1 of Jax can't use their focus or evade tokens that they have.

Ships move and take their actions in turn, not all move then all choose actions.

Also note that the action takes after mivement is not a free action. Free action is a term in the game for any additio al actions a shio might be granted by a gane effect.

And Carnor Jax prevents focus and evade actions; free or not. Nd he prevents the expenditure of focus and evade tokens, which is not actions. You can still perform target locks and other actions at range 1 og Carnor Jax

Just as StephenEsven said, try and avoid the term "free action" when it's your normal action, as this will confuse you later on.

The procedure is always maneuver, check stress, then perform an action if you aren't stressed. So if you had an A-Wing with Push the Limit and you ended your maneuver too close to Carnor, you would not be able to perform a focus or evade action. But you could still perform a barrel roll to make some distance, and then use Push the Limit to perform a focus or evade action if you're now far enough away from him.

Remember Carnor's ability is only range 1, so although it's pretty nasty, he's still got to be close. My advice would be shoot him as soon as possible - he's only got three hull points. Problem eliminated!
