If I wanted to get back into Talisman from scratch...

By SolennelBern, in Talisman

Would this set give me a pleasant, random chaotic delirious and pure fun experience?

- Base game 4th rev. edition

- The Reaper

- The Firelands

- The Nether Realms

- The Dungeon

- The Woodlands

Two years ago I owned Talisman with Dungeon, Highlands, Dragon, City, Sacred Pool, Frostmarsh, Reaper and Bloodmoon. But this was too much and took too much place so we didn't played that much. I finally sold the entire collection and bought Relic + Némésis when it came out.

I love Relic and also love Talisman. But like a LCG, when you're coming back in a well established franchise with lots of expansions available it's really hard not to ruin yourself lol

So with the set above and from your experience in the game, is it a good set to enjoy Talisman for many years?

If I understand correctly, the set is made of all the expansions you didn't buy two years ago + the Dungeon, which you probably liked.

Yes, but you should be aware of the following facts:

1) Firelands is an advanced expansion which brings additional danger to the Adventure Card deck. If you mix it with Base + Reaper + Frostmarch + Sacred Pool + Blood Moon you won't be startled, but with only the base game + Reaper you're about to experience a tougher main board than the one you were used to. Without the Highland and the City, your only escape is through the Dungeon (not very viable in the early game) or the mysterious Woodland. So, if you are not up for additional difficulty, perhaps you need one more small expansion.

Hey, don't take me too seriously, I usually play with 3 Adventure card expansions at a time and I enjoy Firelands a lot when it's part of the mix. I like the random outbursts of hardship it generates.

2) The Woodland looks like an innovative and complex expansion, if compared to the previous ones, especially to the Enemy-filled Dungeon; that's not in terms of obnoxious upkeep, but for all the choices and possibilities it offers with powerful new rewards (Destinies), light/dark fate, fatebound cards, cards with non standard effects, Paths and characters that use tokens. Not sure if this matches your expectations for a "pleasant, random chaotic delirious and pure fun experience".

The Woodland looks very good to me, but it's a long time since I've crossed out Talisman from my list of "beer and pretzels" games.

I agree with Warlock on #1, also want to say if you are not gonna run City you should get Sacred Pool, as it has horses and mules for sale.

I really enjoy the Highlands, more than the Dungeon, but that's me. Its a nice place to start your adventure in.

I am also getting into 4th Edition Talisman for the first time (old 2nd Edition fan). I'm figuring base+Reaper+Sacred Pool+non-Frosty Frostmarch cards will be my new base setting. The_Warlock, if I mix the intriguing FIrelands expansion into the above combo, will its cards and flavor tend to pop up visibly or get lost in the shuffle?

Well, maybe 'ill go with base game + Sacred Pool + Frostmarsh + Reaper to start with.

Maybe even add The Dungeon or The Woodlands...

I have 50$ in credits from my FLGS and since I deceided to skip Conquest, I will check for a new game.

The contenders: Talisman, Wiz-War and Golem Arcana.

Just make a random set draw at start of game play with all the cards and if any come up that target a space in a region not in play ignore the draw and re-draw.

Firelands has several cards that force you to burn cards from the top of the deck, thus bringing out the Fireproof cards and removing the rest from the game. This counters dilution a bit. However, the more adventure cards you use, the less chance you have to see cards from a specific set. Any card added to the Adventure deck has to get along with this.

I don't know what you mean with "non-Frosty Frostmarch cards". Are you about to trim that expansion theme-wise?

It was originally my intention to take out the Frostmarch cards which require cold temperatures, such as the Yeti and Snow Goblin, since they would be drastically thematically inconsistent with the coming of the Firelands. Now, having had a chance to look over all of the Frostmarch cards on the Talisman Wiki, I will only be using the Ancient Artifact, Basilisk, Bag of Carrying, Chalice of Shadow, Champion, Eastern Dragon, Fatebound, Medusa, Ragnarok, Poisoned Dagger, Mystic Portal, Pegasus, Treasure Chest, and Talismonger. I presume excluding all of the other Frostmarch adventure cards from y deck will do much to increase the presence of Firelands cards in the game.

While as unpopular as this is around here, I stand by my groups method: We keep all the sets sorted and add in what we want each game. This adds literally 5 minutes to our break down at the end of the game. In this way you can create a game that highlights the flavor of the game you are going for and doesn't get bogged down with such a random deck with hundreds of cards. Some people like epic randomness of all the expansions combined - and thats great. But our group find the supper stack lopsided and not very balanced. We have found way more re-playability by creating a stronger thematic element when choosing our expansions every game.

We do intend on playing a ridiculous, everything included epic game once we get Forest, but I highly doubt we will do that more that more than once.

Maybe i'll just start with the base game and 2 small box expansions like Reaper and Sacred Pool or Frostmarch and add in from time to time.

That way i'll have enough space to play until I get my 4x8 gaming table in a couple of months.

5 x 6 here!

Nice format! I'm going for a plywood size cause I play lots of Dust Tactics and the 8 feet long is really a must have!

I use 2 fold up tables bought at Sam's Club.
