Since We've Been Gone...

By King of the Saltwives, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

I didnt know really where to put this, so general disscussion seemed as good of a place. The How Are The Meta's doing thread sparked some discussion between Guardian and I today. About a year and a half or 2 years ago now, The KFM ceased playing due to the loss of a place to hold tournies, etc, etc, among other things. Since then obviously much has changed in the community, and while we are up to speed on the game part of it, we aren't up to speed on the community part of it...So if any of you could shed some light on the following, itd be much appreciated.

1) Which metas are all but defunct now?

2) Whatever happend to............Mathlete, Zoltan (Your Mom), Mad K, Prof AJ (and for that matter does ChiCon still exist?), Tzu, Rave, Braz, Melnick, umm....My memory fails me a bit, but pretty much anyone from that time period that doesnt post (or play) anymore.

We were both a little suprised, as when we left it, the boards seemed like a much busier place lol. Maybe that was because of our needless ramblings but i digress. lol.

As for those old faces that still post, we're still happy to see you guys still alive and kicking lol, just so you dont feel left out.

EDIT:

Skip this and go read the other thread. (I've left my original post here just in case you're interested in my not-so-well-informed opinion, however.)

I'm not the best person to answer, but I might be able to take a first shot at some of these questions. Boards are a lot less active here, in part because the switch to LCG only (early rotation of standard) killed a lot of enthusiasm for organized play, and in part because (I think) the boards themselves are unattractive and at times not very user friendly. I think there's been quite a few more activity in the past two months, however, with the announcement of the Greyjoy expansion and also as a natural result of the growing LCG cardpool that is getting more people back into/interested in the game.

With regard to specific metas, I think many are in remission and/or are not that active on these boards. The East Coast meta that was based in Glen Burnie seems to have died out. On the other hand, there is a DC meta where I play that is picking up a bit. (All in all, I'd say the number of net players in the DC area is still down a bit, but enthusiasm seems to be up, so I expect it go grow over the summer.) I've also heard that many CA players no longer play--that's a pretty big hit to competitive play as the Bay Area meta (I think...or was it another?) was a major pillar of AGOT organized play. One of the biggest personal disappointments/perceived losses is Tzumainn, who no longer updates his webpage. I'm not sure if he's taking a temporary leave of absense, or if he's done with the game altogether.

I would say I'm optimistic that--like the economy--AGOT has (hopefully) hit its bottom and is on the upswing. There are now enough LCG cards to make fun, creative decks for four of the houses, and the Greyjoy expansion should make that deck viable. Maybe others can weigh in.

Threat from the East Bay does still meet weekly though last two months our numbers have fluctuated a bit. SoCal and Sactown have both taken hits, but I'm always hopeful that after the previous schedule of rotation comes and goes and we have Core set style decks for all six Houses (and the chapter ppacks that are scheduled for release between now and then) player interest will pick back up. Combine that with what hopefully will be a more O, OP, and perhaps we'll see a real calendar's worth of regionals. Unfortunately I have to work during Gencon otherwise I'd certainly go.
