Customized Target Lock Tokens

By heychadwick, in X-Wing

Do you hate the generic Target Lock tokens? Are they hard to find a match for? Is it annoying to have to figure out who is who? Well, I do. Are there companies that sell customized Target Lock tokens that would make it easier? Yes. Do I want to pay more money? No. I've got the time, so why not just customize my own markers?

Now, I thought about stickers or something with generic pictures in the middle of the TL token to match them up, but I really couldn't find any good stickers. I just decided to make a bunch of graphics and print them off. I figured I could glue them on and then seal them tight. Matt spray to get rid of any shine.

First off, I noticed that the tokens don't really have a lot of color on them. There is just that circle with arrows in the middle to identify them as red or blue. So, I had to paint along the edges of the token. I have the talent to do it nice, but I admit that I'm lazy. I just slapped the paint on. Some were so bad I just painted the whole thing a color. I'm not fazed, but I'm sure others would want to do it nice. Bully for them. I've got other games where I have to paint up minis and I spend my time on them. This is my fun, don't-need-to-paint-anything hobby.

After that, I used a glue stick to stick 'em on! I have some generic icons for each side, but I also got out specific icons for specific ships. The Falcon is there, as well as a Lambda Shuttle. The X-wing icons didn't work well, so I just used Rebel helmets. I then added in specific people's pictures. Darth Vader is there, of course, but also Wedge, and Gold Leader Dutch Vander. I also added in Ten Numb as I've got a list that is using him (yeah, he's over costed, blah blah). There are some more I didn't paint up enough Target Lock tokens for that I can still use, like Luke or Boba Fett, but I figure I can do that later.....if I want.

...and how I will store them. My kid does Rainbow Loom and I just grabbed some. Different colors for different sides. I'll just store them in my Plano tray.

Mess? Sure. Am I happy with the results? Yeah! I haven't used them yet as I just did that this morning. I'll have to seal them up, but it looks good enough to share. Let me know what you think.

Those URLs are broken I'm afraid =/

Yeah, just fixed 'em.

I'm on the lookout for some nice acrylic ones, but this might be a temporary solution. I might give it a shot. :)

I recently purchased a set of Litko target locks.

They're amazing. I love them.

I don't get those Litko ones. There are two pieces of information that are critical for a TL token: the TL icon/symbol of some sort and the identifier. The Litko one has a minuscule number. So do the FFG ones really. If you are going to make a huge stand up item, put the number in the middle and on both sides so it's easy to see from any angle. Or just make flat target locks with a big number in the first place.

I do like those litko tokens, I just don't want them standing up, so in that case I'd have to engrave the numbers myself. =/

I'll take a picture later on - Those Litko TLs are small... The number's easily readable. The FFG TLs are huge and get in the way a lot (IMHO).

To the OP , they look nice.

About the Likto's, see the meter, it is just one centimeter. That's rather small (way more small than the regular ones). I would prefer them if they were just numbers instead tho.

Those are great!

So far my favorite acrylic target locks are these tiny ones:

Oh, those are the best I've seen so far. They are small and designed to be put on the base. I only worry about knocking the base around getting them on and off. If I wanted to spend money, I would probably buy those. As it was, I got to use a work printer and some glue to fix up mine!

Well, if we are showing off stuff.

They interlock for storage and when a target is locked by mutiple attackers. They normally come with regular numbers on them, but I had a custom set done with aurebesh numbers. This shows them in relation to the FFG target locks from GenCon.

Chadwick could you share the pics you used on your target locks?? I would love to see a PDF with all the images in one page to print out and copy your amazing idea if possible.

I just got some paints and colored the edges of my cardboard ones. Now, I don't have to dig for a match set, as long as I see the edge I just match colors

...I've had these for almost a year and never thought of that. -facepalm-

When they interlock, are they supposed to sort of stick together? I bought a set through an LGS instead of directly this time, and they don't stay together at all if you interlock them.

A bit, the laser kerf means they don't really lock together as much as I hoped when I designed them. They work way better on the table (like when a ship is locked by multiple ships). Or back on the pilot card area to keep them in a handy pair.

They're a little loose, but mine do hold together as long as they stay on the table. Still, received lots of positive feedback on the set. Personally, I'm glad they're so much smaller. FFG TLs are massive and take up way too much space

Aurebesh counts in base three...?

It would appear that way.

Yeah, who knew? There are some arabic numerals look a-likes out there too, but if you look at the signs on the images that are in the set photos from Episode 7, these are the numbers they are using, so I'm considering these pretty canon (maybe not technically so until it hits theaters).

For me the issue with the normal target locks is that they are too big. I wish they were smaller so I could rest them on the ship base like I do with the focus/evade tokens. I have forgotten to move them after I moved a ship and got confused as what was targeted by what. I do like your idea of small rubber bands for storing them together though. I have considered using some of the extra number tokens as target locks. I could put one in the slot base for my ship and than just have to worry about placing the target lock on the ship that is being targeted.

I shamelessly liberated the idea from someone else on one of these forums. My kid just got a "Rainbow Loom" set that lets you make these little bracelets out of rubber bands. I was able to acquire all the unwanted colors of yellow and orange for the cause.

I also saw someone use those little plastic clip bases that you would use in old boardgames for their TL tokens. You know Candy Land? You know what the little cardboard gingerbreadman would clip into to stand up? Get a bunch of those and clip your TL's in them. I found a bunch, but haven't used them yet, really. I'm fine with it so far, but as soon as they bug me, I've got them in my kit to pull out.

Nice fix. I glued about a dozen TL pairs together and used a paint marker on the edges so that the same letter is on both sides of the token. I hated digging for a TL pair and not finding the right letter because it is turned over. Plus they are thick enough to stand up on their own next to the ships making it easier to do tight maneuvers without mixing things up.
