What is the proper order of actions during one turn?

By PUX, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hi, I play the game for 3 years already and still do not understand the proper order of actions during one turn. We with my friend agreed on one home rule about this, but I am interested how it was designed by FFG?

Mostly it is about combats. When must combat happen?

Order of actions, as I understand it, is:

Turn starts

1. Upkeep

2. Movement (combat)

3. Encounter in town (combat)

4. Encounter in the other world (combat)

5. Mythos (combat)

Turn ends

If during movement I will move to the street and meet a monster, do I have to fight it right away? Ok, anyway my movement ends here, I fight the monster and win. I stay here and wait for the next phase. During encounter phase it happens so, that moster appears in my location. Do I have to fight him? If I fail, does the monster remains in the location? During other world encounter it is clear, I face monsters there and fight them. Then comes the Mythos phase and monsters can move to my location. But this is still a part of this turn, do I have to fight monsters right now if they are coming to my location?

In my home rule we have to fight monsters as soon as we face them, even during mythos phase. Is this correct?

Nope. You never encounter monsters during the Mythos Phase.

We should consider two possibilities:

A) monsters appearing on the board as result of a Mythos card resolution (can appear for two reasons: monsters spawned through a gate and monsters arriving via Mythos card special text)

B) monsters appearing on the board as a result of an encounter (both Arkham or OW encounters)

in case of A): the monsters stay on the board and you have to deal with them during your movement phase only. Id est, if you enter any area (or you start your turn in any area) with one or more monsters, you have to deal with them, either by evading any / all of them or by resolving combat with those you didn't evade.

in case of B): the monster(s) is removed after the resolution of the encounter (you can evade the monster or fight it, as usual)

if an encounter forces you to move to a location with a monster(s), you can ignore the monster(s) because monsters there are not a result of a "monster appears" encounter.

if an encounter results in a "a monster and a gate appear", the gate appears first, so you're suck through the gate without having to deal with the monster; the monster appears later (and stays on the board; the only exception to the above listed rules)

if you return to Arkham from an OW during your Movement Phase and monsters are present on the gate you just returned to, you are allowed to ignore all of them or simply cherrypick those you want to fight. But this lasts only for the round you return to Arkham, id est, if you fail your attempt at closing the gate, during the next round you have to deal with those monsters before attempting again

if you return to Arkham from an OW as a result of something else (Mythos effect or OW encounter), hence not during your Movement Phase, and monsters are present on the gate you just returned to, you are not allowed to deal with any of them when returning and during the Movement Phase of the following round you must confront the monsters there (by evading or by combat) before attempting to close / seal the gate

Let me know if this helps :)

So, location fights are only allowed during the movement phase, correct?

Yes. Unless you're at a location and draw an encounter "a monster appears!". In this case, you are obliged to deal with the just arrived monster (and only with it, in case there are others present)

This way 4 players game + DH+KY looks impossible. after 4-5 turns we just gets stuck in Hospital/Asylum. maybe KY addon afeects the game so dramatically.

Not so sure I get your point here, Pux, sorry. Why DH+KiY games should be impossible?

I dont know why, maybe we are missing some important detail, but honestly I see no way how to defeat for example the Dark Young, Colour Out of Space or Wraith at the start of the game. Addons bring more tough monsters into the game, so they appear more often. If we fight monsters as soon as we meet them, we have more chances to move at all.

Never said you don't have to deal with monsters; just said that you are allowed by the rules (since this is what your original query was about) to deal with them only during the movement phase. The Colour is always extremely tough to deal wth, and not only due to extremely high San damage that comes with it. Dark Youngsters seem to be tough, but actually having a modified 8 fight should give you quite a chance against them, and it's not that impossible to obtain. Wraith can be annoying, but they are Flyers, so they move to the Sky (and can stay there for a while)

Also, remember you can get rid of the toughest monsters by closing / sealing gates matching the same dimensional symbol, so that this is another option to consider.
