Some questions regarding weapons and combat

By Tauntaun, in Game Masters

Hi,

can you help me understanding how linked weapons work? Ex: Wayfarer freighter has a dorsal quad laser cannon, damage 5, critical 3, range close, accurate, link 3. Suppose I roll (net result) 3 hits, 3 advantages.

1. Does it mean I perform 2 attacks, each dealing 8 damages? And if the advantages are 4, I perform 3 attacks, all same 8 damage?

2. What if the original attack deals a crit?

3.Now, what about auto-fire? It seems to be similar, aside from increased difficulty and the need to declare targets before firing. So, again an additional hit every 2 advantages, same damage for each hit. Correct?

Thanks!

With 3 successes, the hit deals 8 damage. You can spend 2 advantage to deal another hit, up to three times (Linked 3). Each hit will deal 8 damage.

The original attack will only deal a crit if you spend the advantages to do so, and extra hits won't deal extra crits. So let's say you have 3 successes and 5 advantage. You can spend 3 advantage to activate a crit, and the other 2 advantage to activate Linked. The final result will be 2 hits, each for 8 damage, and you inflict one Crit. If you wanted to do more damage, you could instead activate linked twice, for 3 hits, but no crit.

Auto-fire is the same principle. You seem to have that figured out.

Just to clear it for you - with linked quality the extra hits are automatic, you don't roll to check for hit again. Just spend advantages and deal damage again. Also talents that add extra damage, like Dead to Rights add damage only to the first hit.

You can also deal crits with Triumphs, not just advantages.

Sam has clairified that you can crit with each hit. If you hit multiple times (through autofire, two weapon fighting, or linked) you can crit with each hit.

Add a Triumph to the example above for 3 successes, 5 advantages, and 1 Triumph. 1 Triumph activates a crit on the first hit. 2 advantages activates Link for a second hit. 3 advantages activates a crit on the second hit. Don't forget to add the +10 to the second crit roll.

Multiple Critical Rolls with Autofire

Asked by 2P51 :

Can you roll multiple critical hits with a single attack, if the attack lands multiple hits, ie, you get 3 hits on an auto fire attack and theoretically have enough advantages for 3 critical hit results.

Answered by Sam Stewart :

Criticals are generated on a "per hit" basis. So if you've got multiple hits, you can have multiple crits, just one per hit.

Thank you, now I understand better how it works. :)
