Sneakdoor Beta Clarification

By gasric, in Android: Netrunner Rules Questions

Hi all,

Very new to ANR and would just like this clarified for me please.

What I think - Sneakdoor beta when used vs Archives has free reign to just hack away until it then gets ICED up and then becomes useless as this program can't beat a rezzed ICE of any strength, which results in it being useless and best off trashing.

or

What it might be - Sneakdoor beta gets proxied via a program running a hack on Archives which can beat that rezzed ICE protecting it but costs a click to proxy.

or

I have no clue what I'm talking about - I'm clueless gg nap time :P

Thanks

You might be misunderstanding how a Run works.

When you use the ability on Sneakdoor, it begins a run on Archives. This is just like any other Run, except it redirects if successful.

That means an open Archives is a free ticket into HQ. It ALSO means that if Archives is ICEd, you can still use Sneakdoor, but you'll need to deal with the ICE - exactly as you would if going in the front door.

When you make a normal Run, you don't declare 'I'm making a run on [server] with [icebreaker]. You just declare 'I'm making a run on [server]. ALL your rig is available during that run, but you can't trigger any ability that includes a click in the cost until the run is over (so no clicking Magnum Opus while running, for example).

Sneakdoor starts a run on Archives. For that whole run, you have full access to your installed Icebreakers (and potentially other goodies you've installed) - just like you do on a normal run. So it they stick a Wall of Static over Archives, but you have a Fracter (such as Corroder) installed, you can still Sneakdoor into HQ, you just have to pay to break the subroutine on Wall of Static first.

Ah I'm with you now but just as an extended example,

Archives - ICE 1(barrier type) ICE 2(Sentry type) [both razzed]

Rig - Program backdoor beta - Program 2 (sentry breaker) - Program 3 (Barrier breaker)

I start a run using Backdoor beta because i have two programs that can break each of the ICE rezzed on Archives i pay to break each subroutine, this is now a successful run?

or

I start a run using backdoor beta and choose to use the best icebreaker program which will result in the best outcome for me as i can only use one icebreaker program to hack that line of ICE?

Thanks

The first one. Start a run with Sneakdoor, break the barrie with the barrier breaker, then break the sentry with the sentry breaker. Now you're in HQ!

However be aware that you don't HAVE to break a subroutine if you don't want or need to. A run only ends if you Jack out or trigger an End-the-Run subroutine.

You can always run with no breakers or even just trigger all subroutines in an ice and keep going if there is no ETR.

You can use any number of icebreakers you want during a run (and having to use multiple ones is quite common). The run is considered successful when you pass every piece of ice in that server and don't decide to jack out.

So it's closer to the first option but you do not have to break every subroutine, just the ones that would end the run. Granted, you'll often want to but it's not necessary.

Let's say you want to make the run from your example:

You start it by using Sneakdoor beta. Then you approach the first piece of ice, a barrier, which has a single subroutine reading "End the Run." You can now use the abilities on your barrier breaker to match the strength of that ICE and break the subroutine. If you don't (or can't), the subroutine fires, ending your run. If you do, you pass that piece of ice.

Now you decide whether you want to continue the run. If you do, you approach the second piece of ice.

This one's a sentry, which has a subroutine that reads "Do 3 Net-Damage." You can now use your sentry breaker to break that subrouine (just as you did with the last ice). If you do, everything's fine, if you don't, the subroutine fires and you take 3 Net-Damage, however, you will pass the ice either way, because the subroutine doesn't end the run.

Once again, you can decide whether you want to continue the run or jack out. Since you just passed the last piece of ICE on that server, you basically just decide if you want to access it or not.

Let's assume you want to continue and access it. Now you have made a successful run and get to access HQ.

Thanks guys :)
