so I guess I am not the only one who has never heard of or seen one of these.

In any 'dice mechanic' based games, this conversation will come up eventually.

My short answer is that no, unless there is a concern for cheating or rigged dice rolling skills (which do exist), there is no need for a dice tower. They are usually large, cumbersome, and in a tournament environment, take up room on a table which is already short on space to fit my cards, let alone a bulky dice tower.

I can see the need for them, I can see the 'coolness' factor on them for fun, non-competitive games, but overall, more trouble then they are worth.

That being said, I have the Dice Tower DM's Screen for D&D/Pathfinder and I love it. But that is just clean fun, not a competitive miniatures game.

I find this is a great comprise, for many miniatures game it's also nice cause you can put it over the miniatures.

Interesting solution... however the real purpose of a Dice Tower is to make sure the dice spin, toss, and turn to generate a completely random and unmolested dice roll. While this is cool, and will keep all of the dice on one place, and will not take up room on the table (I like that!), it would still allow for funky dice rolling skills, dropped dice cheats, and more.

Dice box on stilts.. interesting.. but I think I'd just rather have a dice box on the side.. I always have room around the table...

I have an old vinyl Darth Vader mug that I removed the handle from and I use it as a dice cup. Love it.

It's one more thing to carry, so no. I'm not a fan of them.

This is precisely why I just roll dice on a smaller foldout table when playing at home.

I use a knife and fork, I also bath regularly and wear pants you know like a civilized person.

As for dice towers, I love them.

I got one from Litko. I like their ones as they are plasticy rather than wood and collapse for storage

To those who say they take up too much room, I say you got one that is too big.

Rolling dice on your play surface can cause bumps, knock tokens, move asteroids and most annoyingly fall off the table

Having any of these happen costs time and if your at a tourney time is VERY important.

So I say using a dice tower at a tourney is more important than at a casual game.

I prefer dice trays.

- Feel of rolling dice

- Keeps dice contained so they don't bump minis.

- Still get that feeling of playing casino like craps bouncing my dice off the edge.

- Can get customized images at the bottom of the tray for personalization.

Also, just use a mug! Controlled dice enviroment and you feel like a pirate!

Towers can prevent Jedi Dice Tricks from altering the outcome of the game.

Never heard of em before this, as I mainly play casual I don't see one getting added to the list of things I own, primarily as a I don't want to have to carry it thing.

It looks like this. You drop the dice in the top. It makes it less likely that the dice will fall off the table and prevents the occasional off roll (like when you roll the dice and they just land and don't roll). I dislike them, its like eating pizza with a fork and knife.

so i have came to the conclusion i am going to build one of my own there are plans online for one made from foam board and the mechanics to them are rather simple.

i build my own dice tower from foam core it turned out rather well but im sure i can tweek it a bit and make it more mine.

I'm of the opinion that if you can't keep your dice on the table, you have a hand rolling problem that you could fix by learning how to throw dice. I view a dice tower as a waste of money based upon misconceptions about non-existent hand rolling "effects". If how the dice fall is your "edge", you're thinking way too hard about it.

It's not just about the table, it's also about all the stuff on the table that you don't want knocked around: minis, tokens, your opponent's dice, etc.

Plus they're kind of cool to have.
