Why is the only way to buy this book new, to spend £400+ on amazon?

It appears to be between printings. If your FLGS doesn't have one, and you want a physical copy instead of downloading, you may be stuck until that printing is shipped.

I am a little tempted to try to sell my copy now...

Personally I'm far more tempted to wait twenty years until they've been out of print for a decade and THEN sell not just it but all my books.

I dug up a copy in Patriot Games. Good luck getting one, but you may wish to wait until the reprint.

when I see prices like that on amazon, I think it's from some sort of automatic script

that has bad parameters, like "raise price 10% every 2 weeks that item has been out of stock"
