So if, say, this happened:
My Defender lands on an asteroid
Jonus with Squad leader moves up into R1-2 of him and uses squad leader to give the Defender an action, could the Defender then Barrel Roll of the asteroid?

Yes he can!
Neither the movement template nor the final position may overlap an obstacle. And you can perform actions, just not your normal one.

Thank you
This is what i thought, but I couldn't find it anywhere.
Answer = Possibly.
The Defender can get an action but the roll (or boost if possible) direction must be clear. If you can't set the template down without hitting the rock you're sitting on you are still stuck.
New player here. When the defender ends movement on the obstacle it has to roll for damage right? It can not prevent the damage roll by activating off of Jonus at a later point in the game.
Correct. Any ship that ends it's maneuver on an obstacle must roll for possible damage. If the ship has shields, then it will lose a shield if it rolls a hit or a crit. If it doesn't have any shields, it will take the appropriate damage card depending on what was rolled.
Unless you're Dash Rendar and say "F-you, rock." and just barrel roll off it with no problem.
Yeah your just not allowed to roll onto an obstacle, off is fine.
Are you stuck for the game if you hit a rock? I'm learning and a guy at my store made me stay on the rock the whole game then proceeded to shoot that ship last since it was helpless. I felt slighted but couldn't find in the rules where it said otherwise.
No, you're not stuck for the game. The guy you played was wrong. You can move off again in the following turn as normal.
Have a read of page 20 of the rulebook.
If you land on an obstacle, you skip your perform action step and roll for possible damage, and you can't attack until you're clear of the obstacle. Next turn move off, but if your template overlaps the obstacle, you miss your Perform Action step and roll for possible damage again.
Take care when flying around obstacles.
Thank you so much! I will show that guy this post.
Better still, show him the rules. There's absolutely nothing there about being stranded for the rest of the game. It's not like the obstacle suddenly develops a tractor beam.
The "Important:" note is in reference to the normal overlap rules of sliding back down the template, which you do for ships, but not for obstacles.
Advanced Sensors can give this to you as well.

No it can't. AS gives you an action before you move. That doesn't help in this case.

When you're on the asteroid, you can barrel-roll off before you move through it.
Good point. However, you still won't be able to use Advanced Sensors to barrel roll if the template overlaps the asteroid.

Unless you roll a critical for the space slug obstacle in which you cannot assign a maneuver dial at the planing phase. At the at the end phase roll an attack dice if a critical hit then you may assign maneuver dial in the next planning phase. (disclaimer not an official FFG rule)
