too many points to ignore A-wing?

By Ayleron, in X-Wing

So once Aces and Outrider come outi was thinking I would run jake Farrel as a flanker with out maneuver, lone wolf, and chardaan refit. This makes him 27 points, is that too many to spend on an A-wing? I plan on running Tarn with r7, B-wing(blue) with sensors, and gold Y-wing with ion turret. Would that make the A-wing too much of a target in you guys opinions?

The only reason I don't like it is because you want Jake to get close to the enemy, if the enemy decides to close in on your other ships the range 2 might be hard to maintain. I think most people would agree to take PtL.

The best A-wing pilot is going to the the 15 point Prototype Pilot at PS1. Upgrades and high PS on a 15 point ship is an expensive proposition.

Yeah... you can have two 15 point Prototypes to flank for just a little bit more than an outfitted Jake.

But U-turn Tycho is going to be soooo much fun.

Keep him alive and he will be much more valuable in the End Game than 1-2 prototypes.

If you haven't flown Jake, don't dismiss him. If you are afraid of high PS enemies, try VI, which also helps with repositioning. In a Squad with Kyle, he can be magical.

Tycho, A-wing prototype pilot, Ptl, Expert handling, chardan. Phantom left smoking in the corner :D

Tycho with outmaneuver and opportunist + test and chaardan is a death machine! He is expensive but very fun.

Opportunist ends with: "You cannot use this ability if you have any stress tokens." So it is unlikely to be particularly useful on Tycho, who is just about always going to have stress tokens.

I've found both a kitted out Tycho or Jake to be very hard for my opponent to handle and overall worth the price of admission. U-Turn Tycho is quite fun.

Also the stock Prototype Pilot is a worth-while filler option over a Z-95.

I have not had much success with the mid-ranged named pilots as of yet, they may just be too costly for thier impact level.

Has anyone tried some mid priced Green Squadron builds?

The thing is Jake Farrell has a better chance of hitting mid range than 2 prototypes. The focus, loss of an evade dice, and one reroll are huge for landing hits, often times you need at least one of them to get past the probability of getting a hit vs at least one evade. I have a long history of A-wing wiffing.

Currently I fly a green squadron with outmaneuver, without PTL though I usually have to pick between placement and focus

It'll be annoying for a month then a-wings will have the same issue interceptors do one big turret ship only this one has four attacks with expose and a mini swarm backing it up.

Unless the A-wings bring their own big four-dice turret wingman along. Or a couple four-dice B-wings. Or any number of rather nasty Rebel ships.

With that said, I don't think Tycho is the best for this trick. At PS8, he's unlikely to shoot before the enemy spends their stress, so Opportunist doesn't seem like it would have many chances to trigger. I would think that a Focus/TL from PTL would be more valuable.

My standard Jake Loadout is PTL + refit + outmaneuver + test pilot. Expensive but powerful. If the opponent turns to face him you get to Evade, Focus, and then BOOST OR BR. Pretty hard nut to crack without the entire force focus firing... bring backup that punishes them if they choose that.

Cracken is also amazing with Jake and another Z with missile.

How are you barrel rolling?

Jake and choose to Boost or BR when he takes a focus action or gets a focus token. You do have to do it in the right order (Focus, free B or BR, then PTL for evade); I should have made that clearer.

Holy cow how did I miss that he could barrel roll?!

I just assume Tycho auto-takes PtL, so stacking Opportunist wouldn't work.

It's all fun until someone drops a proton bomb nearby.

:-(

Has anyone tried 5 prototype pilots with proton rockets?

I don't understand, I would love for my opponent to go after my flanker so I can point my big guns at them without return fire.

Turtle up with focus/evade or do unexpected manoeuvres with your A to get out of arc and hope the green dice are with you (the bastards never are, but there's always hope!)
