Impressions playing the quickstart with my wife

By peterstepon, in X-Wing

Last night I was able to get my wife to Play X-Wing. We played the basic game in the core box. I want to explore playing the core set scenarios a few times before making the leap to spending tons of $$$ on new ships... or eventually that huge rebel transport

The result of the game was an overwhelming Imperial Victory, the X-wing was destroyed while only inflicting one damage on the Obsidian Tie Fighter

X-Wing fighter: Hits hard, and can take more damage due to its shields. However, rather slow to evade incoming fire, and a bit more clumsy in maneuvering.

Tie fighters: More fragile, and does not hit as hard, but I found more nimble and able to pull off better maneuvers. In addition, having 2 meant I could concentrate more fire on him most of the time.

I find that the core set favors the imperials. Sure X-Wing has more firepower, but the tie fighters compensate for that by being able to evade. The dice rolls I found is that, when the X Wing fires, everyone rolls 3 dice, when the Tie Fighters fire, everyone rolls 2 dice.

The X-Wing is sturdier and can take 5 hits to the 3 each that the Tie fighters can take. However, collectively, the Tie Fighters are a tough nut to crack. In addition, I find that the tie fighters are quite nimble and I can move into position to get the X-Wing into my firing arc.

Overall, a great game that is pretty simple to grasp. I look forward to more advanced play and getting expansions eventually.

yeah, fair conclusions.

The 1 x vs 2 TIE thing can go the other way as often though.

You only need one decent critical hit early on to make one of those TIEs sub optimal.

Small games make the dice more important than ever.

Also get close and be rolling four dice in a position where they cant fire back.....

Try playing the scenario you do at the mo but add R2D2 to the xwing.. getting a shiled back when you do a green manouvre might even it up for you if the rebel player is struggling

Tie fighters are still nice. The Tie Swarm of 7-8 Tie fighters still show strong in competition. If you like the Tie Fighter think about getting a Tie Intertceptor or Tie Phantom to be your flanker.

X wings are really nice when paired with other x wings or b wings. They also can make a good main force and use a faster craft to flank. Hope you and your wife stick with it, X Wing is a really fun and simple game.

Thanks for your posts. I was playing the really really simple rules that are in the small booklet (easier to ease my wife into my geekery). I will pursue the scenarios that allow me to build on the scenario.

Imperials being overpowered in the core set...hahahahaha!

That gave me a good laugh. There have been so many threads claming the exact opposite...

Seriously though, no. The Core game is very balanced. And DO NOT play quickstart. It's worse than osik.

Actually, there was a thread earlier about this, and the general assumption was, generic Ties vs a generic X-wing, Ties win unless X-wing has R2-D2. The game isn't horribly unbalanced with the core set, but it gets more balanced at 100 point games. Welcome to the addiction btw. :)

Yeah, they will because that's uneven points. Unless it's like two blacks against Luke.

Imperials being overpowered in the core set...hahahahaha!

That is why I am excited about Star Wars Armada. A Nebulon B and a corvette against a Star Destroyer, that will be interesting

Um...why did you reply by editing my post? But yes, it will, although I do not think as some people do that the VSD will OP'ed against those ships.

I think you and your wife should declare sides. You pick the nobel Rebels and she can have the evil hated Empire.

Make that the Righteous and beloved Empire and Evil hated Scum of the galaxy Rebels.

If I could shove an R2 unit in a Interceptor or Defender, I would love the Empire. Until then, I need my little buddy.

Sorry, the quote and reply function made my response a blank line

Bah! No need for silly little droids when you have skill! Unlike the Rebels, the Empire does not droids or torpedoes or shields to fight. We only need skill.

I just played this match, but because I know how to fly, I decimated my new opponent. I think point wise, it is unbalanced, but a good X-Wing can still triumph.

It all depends on the rolls even more so with just 3 ships.

I played against my wife and she got 3 hits at range 3 against one of my Ties. I of course rolled 4 blank green dice. So it was immediately 1 v 1. My lonely Tie was heroic and somehow managed to get the X-wing down to 2 hull, but was then blasted...

Another time I took out the X-wing with my 3rd shot from my Ties. Really the game gets more balanced the more you add to it, as one bad roll doesn't have as huge an impact.

My first impression?

You have an awesome wife.

The quickstart rules do favor the TIE Fighters. The TIEs get more points worth of ships and here I'd say the lack of range modifiers will favor the TIEs.
