Ships constantly facing/touching one another, newbie question.

By Naterfost, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Just recently started playing x-wing and i have this question that came up last night while playing.
We had a tie-fighter and an x-wing ending their movement facing (and touching) one another.
As i interpret it according to the rules, neither of them will move or take actions, so they are constantly locked there, till one of the two gets destroyed by other ships. Am i wrong? Thanks in advance!

TIE-Fighters can't do a straight 1, they can't be locked facing an X-Wing. At some point in the Activation Phase they will have to overshoot the X-Wing.

Ships can always move on their turn. Even if they collided with another in the previous one.

Only the ship that overlaps another with its movement loses its action step. The one that 'was there' is unaffected.

In your case:

Ship A moves and takes its normal action.

Ship B moves and overlaps ship A, so B loses its action step (But A, which already took its action, is largely unaffected).

Next round,

Ship A moves. Its maneuver template can 'pass over' ship B without problems. Only the final position of ships matter to determine if they overlap or not.

Ship B which no longer has ship A in front of him, also moves normally.

When moving ships, think of them as if they 'teleport' from their original position to the final position.

Yes you are wrong.

I assume what happened was that one ship moved, and performed it'øs action. then the othe ship moved and overlapped, thus skipping the Perform Action Step. They could not attack each other due to touching each other.

Next round the lower PS ship reveals it's maneuver. you lay the movement template, and if the end position clears the opposing ship, there is no overlap, and you move the ship. If is overlaps, it doesn't move, and skips perform action. Then perform the same for the opposing ship when it is it's turn to move.

I see, major mistake then :D Thanks for helping!

It is possible to get two ships in a position where neither of them moves because they will overlap each turn unless they want to select movements which will clear the other.

Just because they've overlapped, it doesn't mean they remain static for the rest of the game. They skip their Perform Action step, but that's about it. They can still shoot (just not at the ship they're touching), and they can still plan a maneuver for the next turn. If that maneuver get's them clear, it back to normal.

I've seen a lot of newbie mistakes happen when ships overlap: players have taken damage cards, placed stress tokens, discarded shield tokens, taken damage cards when they've got shields, all sorts of interesting craziness. None of these apply with an overlap.

If you overlap trying a green maneuver, you still get to clear a stress token if you have some. If you were trying a red K-turn and overlapped, you don't turn, but you do get a stress token from for the red maneuver. Either way, you miss your Perform Action step, can't shoot the guy you're touching, and it's pretty much business as usual from there.
