Recently at a tournament a local player asserted that one MUST have the newest toys to have a chance at winning tournaments. I reject this!
As a thought exercise, will you join me in building competitive tournament lists with only ships/cards from wave three and below.
I put forth my wave three "Bye Bye" list:
2 Gold Squadron Y-Wings with Ion Cannons and R2 units
2 Blue Squadron B-Wings with Advanced Sensors
Look forward to seeing what falls out of this...

Sounds pretty cool. Have fun, and let us know what happens! Some would argue putting R2s on the GSPs though. R5s might be better.......
What happens when you fight a phantom + swarm? Low PS, low firepower, low defense dice and ion are bad against both of those things.
Edited by dmgcontrolI went 3rd at my last tourney using Soontir with PTL, Stealth and Shield, Bounty Hunter with Recon and two Obsidians. Now Wave 4 there. Definitely agree that it is not needed.
Played against a similar list with a phantom list (non mini swarm), and it was tough to chew through 32 HP. Add some R3-A2 and flechette torpedoes on the Y wings and you should have a decently competitive list.
My default list is Bounty Hunter plus Recon Specialist (x2) plus Buzzsaw Shuttle. I need neither Phantom nor the soft white underbelly of a YT to keep me entertained.
I came in second in a tourney with
OGP Gunner, FCS, EU
Dark Curse
RGP, Hull Upgrade, Determination X2
I think there are plenty of lists that work well without wave 4. Heck while 3PO is popular, I don't think he is actually needed on Han; Chewie or a Flight Instructor would function just as well, better against some lists, i find its mostly Hans Firepower with a boost at PS9 that does it. I don't tend to think of them as Wave 3 or Wave 4 cards, once I have them I consider them cards.

I actually beat the eventual tournament winners Fat Han by Ioning him early and then again later coupled with some timely blocking. That being said all Han has to do is stay out of range of the ion turrets and he is safe. If you get a lucky ion you can take out a phantom but it can be tough going. Phantom plus maxiswarm will just be a really tough matchup.
With so many HP's it is pretty resilient and it does ok, but not fantastic.
I still like the fact 4 shuttles flown proper is nasty.

Tbh any thought out list can be competitive if flown well and IF the dice gods are in your favour.
I would go with something like this:
Boba Fett (W2) + Veteran Instinct (W2) + Rebel Captive (W3)
Howlrunner (W1)
Obsidian Squadron Pilot (W1)
Obsidian Squadron Pilot (W1)
Obsidian Squadron Pilot (W1)
Boba is your Phantom killer: 2 Fireing arc, PS10, can change direction and give stress the first time he's attacked. The mini-swarm is your Falcon killer combined with the Firespray firepower. I took Obsidians to prevent Predator from being too good but you could make them into academy pilots and use the 3 point left for a Stealth Device on Howlrunner or a Hull Upgrade is Imperial Aces is ''legal''.
My 2 favorite lists right now:
1) BY Roark, very similar to your list!
- Gold w/ Ion Turret, R3-A2 (rebel transport isn't quite wave 4, right?)
- Roark w/ Ion Turret & Intel Agent
- 2x Blues w/ AS
2) Fel mini-swarm (98 pts for initiative bid)
- Soontir Fel w/ PTL
- Howlrunner
- 2x Obsidian
- 2x Academy
I have beat Phantom lists with both of these but haven't come across a Fat YT yet. Well, I got one Fat Chewie list but it was someone very green so it doesn't count.
French National was won by 4x Obsidian 4x Academy. Not an easy list to fly but it took down everything.
