Fat Han Problems

By MikeNYHC, in X-Wing Battle Reports

Hey Guys,

I'm a relatively new player and I recently encountered my first destructive Han list.

My opponent was using Paul Heaver's list from GenCon this year.

Han w/ Luke, C-3PO, Engine Upgrade, Veteran Instincts, Millenium Falcon

Biggs

Tala Squadron

My first list was a 2 Defender plus Backstabber list that went down hard and fast.

My second list was a Fettigator with another Firespray and Backstabber. It's frustrating because Fettigator has very little use against the turret primary.

Either way, I'm a bit overwhelmed when it comes to dealing with Han and the ridiculous re-rolls. I know a lot of people suggest using a swarm but I don't want to be another 7 TIE pilot myself.

I'm trying to come up with anti-Han lists now. Does anyone have a list that works for them? Or tips and strategies for flying certain lists against this one?

What works against this list in my humble opinion is:

Triple Firespray:

You will most likely get rid of Han's small support before one Firespray goes down and then it is 3v1 and ard-dodging is hard for the falcon because of the rear-arcs. And any damaged FS can be flown away from Han. If Han follows, you still get to shoot at him.

4X:

For me they worked well against several Super-Hans. Especially if you bring Wedge, as he can negate C3PO (Zero dice -> no dice rolling -> no C3PO-bet)

Corran Horn with Engine Upgrade, Fire Control System and R2D2:

This, along with a tanky Chewie killed me, when I played Paul's list. I made the mistake of trying to kill Corran first, though. That didn't go well, at all. R2D2 regenerated at least 4 shield points, while Chewie chewed through my list.

I hope, one of these lists was helpful.

If you *know* you will be facing a YT (with or without Han) you could opt to field Tie bombers.

3x bombers with flechette torps (for range 3) and a cluster missile set you back 72 pts.

Add Captain Jonus and you have 6 pts for upgrades. (determination is my choice+2 flechettes and munition failsafe)

This squad can deliver multiple flechettte torpedoes at range 3 multi-stressing the YT and thus make him predictable.

Close in and unleash at range 1 or 2 the clusters. keep Jonus nearby for the reroll and enjoy the carnage.

The trouble is that this very nifty squad works very well vs YT builds but goes down HARD vs high PS arc dodgers.

Thanks guys!

I'm definitely a huge fan of the Bomber although I've seen how weak it can be when it comes to dogfighting with more agile ships.

It's difficult as an Imperial player to find a list that can shut down the Falcon as well as more maneuverable X/B lists.

Flechette torpedoes don't work on the YT-1200 because of its hull value.

This. Even once you've damaged the ship, it's hull value is still the same and will ignore the stress. Having damage cards does not decrease the hull value.

I've had great success with HLC's against falcons

OOPS (about the flechette torps)

I guess I should use them more eh?

Ah well; the gist of things remains that Bombers do pretty good vs Falcons but go down hard vs some other very popular builds. (Phantoms most notably)

Bombers with ordnance won't work well against Paul Heaver list because of Biggs.

You just need raw durable firepower to deal with his list.

if you don't want to play a Tie swarm, then I suggest high impact low agility ships that won't care about gunner.

rebel:

4 Blue and a bandit should give you resilient firepower

2 Blue HLC, 2 Rookies

Empire:

Some combination of firespray/lambda

2 lambda HLC, Firespray

2 Firespray, Recon spec, ion canon, 2 academies

Yeah guys, I played a few more matches now and things are looking up!

I managed to beat the Heaver List with a modified swarm with

Vader with Cluster Missiles and Veteran Instincts

Howlrunner

AP x 4

and also

Krassis with HLC

OGP with Vader, IC

Soontir with PTL

I have only played against 1 Heaver list as Imperial, but I won with no losses (though Howl and Jax were close, both saved by Determination). I played close formation, and I wasn't afraid to pull back in order to set up a full formation pass:

Carnor Jax - Royal Guard Tie, Determination, Stealth Device, Hull Upgrade

2x Saber Squadron Pilot - Predator

Howlrunner - Determination

The idea was to get everyone in range of Biggs with Jax in range 1 of Han. Have everyone evade, relying on Predator and Howlrunner's ability to drop Biggs. Once Biggs is down focus on the Falcon keeping Jax in range 1. Evades should be priority (unless you need to roll/boost to maintain arc/range). My opponent had a hard time deciding who to go after (Jax vs Howl), so that indecision might have played a major role in my win.

I like this list. A lot.

I like this list. A lot.

Yeah, I thought I was going against his Moldy Crow Katarn list with a blaster turret so I built this. He threw Heaver's Fat Han at me and lo and behold it held up real well.

Yeah, Fat Han is not the game breaker some try to make him out to be.

True. he does not break the game.

But like any other over-used ship (looking at Phantom but it seems a bit in decline in my local meta) it sure as hell *bores* the game.

The problem is that the lists that that counter Fat Han like the one above will go down to Whisper. The biggest advantage of Fat Han is that it's very strong against Phantoms and still good against everything else. It's the best all-comers list in this meta right now.

I got 99 problems, but Fat Han ain't one.

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

my new goto for tourneys that can really work well against Hans.

2x sigma squadron w/ spa and rec spec

1x turr w/

1x academy pilot

clocks in at 98 points, throws alot of solid dice. Turr helps against phantoms, since the 2 point bid should at least get you to a die roll, which is all you really do as imp against whisper. The academy offers formation bumping, which really helps against swarms, and can annoy most ships, while the phantoms provide a very large base of fire with alot of tokens for defense.

(I know it's a phantom list, but it plays more like a 4 ship rebel build)

Just bring 8 TIE and be done with it.

A counter Meta list I built for dealing with Fat Hans and Phantoms

Nera + Deadeye + Flechette x2

Roark + Ion turret

Bandit with Ion Pulse Missile x3

Nera and Roark to get PS12 and stress a phantom so it can't cloak, then ionize it and ghostbuster it.

Z's are for dealing with Han. Roark can push one to shoot before Han and, if you have Biggs to deal with, you just focus fire Biggs (if he dies he dies but if he doesn't then he'll have an ion toke on him from Roark and won't be able to keep up with the Falcon. TL and ion the falcon with one Z, then repeat the next round. 3 Z's with ion pulse force a hard choice in targets. Take out the 3 Z's or work over the less threatening B and HWK.

Note, when dealing with a Fat Han list, stay to your side of the board and build up a block of asteroids in the middle so Han keeps to the edge. Separate from Biggs and escort Falcon off the board. Don't matter if he has shields left, if Han leaves the playing surface you win.

It is also a bit swarmy so if you have to go all guns you can.

Biggs to deal with, you just focus fire Biggs (if he dies he dies
