Marksmanship Clarification Please

By auggiedog, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Since Marksmanship has 'Action' listed on its card, I can assume that if I want to use this card that I cannot perform any other action, like Focus, Evade and such on that turn, correct? Thank you in advance.

The use of the Action: header on the card means it's your action for the perform action step, or if someone gives you a free action. So if you have it on an X-Wing that would give you Focus, Target Lock and Marksmanship as the available actions you could choose from. It's also restricted by the usual action rules in that you can't perform it twice in a turn, or while you're stressed.

Refer page 9.

Other Actions
Some card abilities include the “ Action: ” header. A
ship may resolve this ability during its “Perform Action”
step. This counts as that ship’s action for the round.

That is what I thought, thanks.

Question:

Say I had a target lock on the enemy and I chose as my action Marksmanship. Would it be logical to first spend the Target Lock to reroll what dice I needed to and then from there use Marksmanship to change 1 <eye> to a crit and all other <eye> results to hits?

That's exactly how you'd use it.

Reading is hard...

I would note that some "free actions" are restricted. Occasionally it is to a specific type but at other times it is to an action on your toolbar which would NOT include Marksmanship.

It would be very reasonable to spend the TL first before using Marksmanship just like using TL before Focus is also pretty Logical. With Marksmanship/Focus you know what will happen when used but with TL there is still a random outcome.

Note however that you are not performing the marksmanship action after rerolling the dice with TL. You have to have used the marksmanship action prior to your attack so that it is in effect when you are attacking. So

Move

Perform marksmanship action

Attack

Use TL from a previous turn

Use the ability the marksmanship action gave you to change eyes into booms/kaboom

Also note, while some sources of free actions limit the type of action you can perform, as stevenO mentions, some do not. You can

Move

Perform a target lock action

Your ally lando does a green move

A Squad leader passes you a free action

You perform marksmanship action

Attack

Etc...

It is also worth noting that the wording on marksmanship means to works for every attack the ship makes during the entire round. So if the ship that used marksmanship somehow gets multiple attacks in one turn (gunner, corran horn, cluster missiles), the marksmanship effect granted by performing the action earlier in the round stays active for every attack.

Wow. That turned into a longer post than I expected.

@auggiedog:

An example of this would be Push the Limit, which allows you to perform a free action shown in your action bar . Having Marksmanship adds to your available options, but it doesn't add to your action bar like some other upgrades (like Targeting Computer, Engine Upgrade or the Millennium Falcon title).

Therefore you couldn't perform a Target Lock and use Push the Limit to perform Marksmanship.

I do believe you could use your Action on Marksmanship and then use PtL to Target Lock.

I also believe there will be an upgrade coming out that will allow to perform an action from an upgrade card (one not on your action bar) after you perform an action.

Correct on both counts. It's important to know what the limits on those cards are, but there is usually a way to stack the order to get around them.

Reading is hard...

Reading can be difficult for some people yes, for a variety of reasons. It's best not to assume the reading comprehension level of anyone other than yourself. Dyslexia, learning challenges, non-English speaker, poor translations for the rule books in question, and so on are all viable possibilities.

That would be the Experimental Interface modification, which is the opposite of Push the Limit.

The thing that Forgottenlore also pointed out was some cards do have certain limits and the order in which the cards are used can usually get around things to a certain degree.

Using Lando to trigger Marksmanship does not work.

Lando can only give a free action that is on the pilots action bar.

However, anytime you get a free action (without a limitation like Lando's) or perform action step you can choose Marksmanship just like any other action.

The same applies to face up damage cards that have the " Action: " header as well.

Oops. I didn't realize lando had that restriction.

Edited original post to squad leader now.

Huh. I don't think I've ever really paid any attention to what Lando's ability was. Now that I see it, could be more useful than I first thought. Can still do the traditional fat falcon build, with some abilities to share. Less offensive than fat Han, but still.
