Good mapping software needed.

By knasserII, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hi,

I don't know if there's anything out there that would meet my needs but if there is, I figure you people will know about it. :)

At the moment I draw out maps in Inkscape and GIMP. Both free software but I'm willing to pay money for a good solution if there is one.

The first thing I want to do is draw out a city. At the moment it a big wiggly circle with bits of writing in it saying "docks" or "spaceport". It would be fantastic if there is anything out there that lets me "paint" in buildings, etc. Also, the coast line. I want something very high level (as in altitude). Ditto for forest, etc.

Second thing I want to do is close in areas - interiors, construction sites, streets, that sort of thing. Maybe that's the same software as the first one, maybe it's something else.

Obviously a leaning toward sci-fi would be preferred for both of these if possible.

Suggestions / recommendations?

Was gonna suggest that but saw Deaglan had already answered. They also have a forum you could search and ask questions in.

knasserII I was just looking the website and on the home page it lists tutorials and software under "section widget" about halfway down the page on the right sidebar.

You might enjoy this site from among our ranks - it's not mapping software, it's goodies to put in your maps.

Campaign Cartograhper with the city addon seems to be what you need if you are willing to fork over the money and learn the program.

AutoRealm is not as powerful as CC, but it is completely free. It includes some urban exterior and interior symbols with the base download if you don't wish to make the details yourself. It is also MUCH easier to use then CC even though they are both essentially CAD/CAM programs.

I have and have used both. I keep going back to AutoRealm that I paid nothing for.
