Almost succumbed to temptation

By KnightShift, in X-Wing

Went to my FLGS tonight. I've come to know the family that runs it really well. And they had plenty of the current wave. So far I've added none to my fleet. The last thing I bought was two Imperial Aces.

I wanted to get those new ships sooooooo bad!! But I'm writing a book and I need to focus on that for the moment. I went to the store as part of a much-needed break. And now those Z-95s and TIE Phantoms are going to haunt my dreams however long I'm working on this :(

I should never have looked at them.

As soon as this project is finished, I swear: a whole swarm of Headhunters. And two TIE Defenders. Maybe three just for the heck of it.

What's your book about? =)

I went to my local store Thursday and he had a decimator behind the counter from gencon. He sold it to me for retail price.

WHAT I want one

Yahoo!

What's your book about? =)

It's about having manic-depression. Commonly known as bipolar disorder. It's part memoir, part illumination about aspects of this that very rarely get discussed, part exemplifying what this does to a person. It's a serious book but there's going to be PLENTY of humor too. And you have to be able to laugh at this :)

It's a good thing my manic side wasn't in charge tonight: I would have probably bought a hundred dollars worth of Phantoms alone, LOL!! :)

12 Sigma Squadron

48 dice, in 12 packets of 4. Mayhem. Utter mayhem. Epic mayhem. Let the chaos rule. Give in to the dark side.

And by "the heck of it" you mean "Predator". Because seriously… Predator.

If it gets published (my friends keep insisting that it's not "if" it's "when" LOL) I'll be sure to post something. A book like this should be 75,000-100,000 words. So far I'm at 67,000. But along the way to that there has been some material yanked out, some reconfigured etc. Hopefully it will all be ready by the end of next month. I'm looking for some agent representation already. With memoir-ish stuff I'm learning that it is often better to work with a publisher in the midst of still writing, so you can better establish and refine the tone of the book etc.

So far I've let a few trusted associates read parts of it. One friend said she was moved to tears by the chapter I gave her. While another said the one she received was unbelievably hilarious! Would love to see all of it on Amazon. If/when it gets published I'm going to the Barnes & Noble nearby on the book's street date, find where it is in the shelves and scream out "MY BOOK!!! HEY THAT'S MY BOOK!!!"

At that point armed police will no doubt escort me off the premises, but it will be worth it ;)

I'd be really happy for you too! Yah. Let us know if you release any teasers.

That's more words than I can string together, that's for sure.

You're not the only one in danger of succumbing to temptation, OP. I really need to shift some stuff out before I bring some stuff in.. but... but... shinyprettythings... wewantsthem... wewantsthemnaow

IM PLAYING TOMORROW. YAHOO!

Any lists or fun things I should try? Campaigns? Crazies?

If it gets published (my friends keep insisting that it's not "if" it's "when" LOL) I'll be sure to post something.

If the traditional publishing route fails for you, there is no shame in going the self-publishing route. If you are willing to learn some basic layout skills, you can self-publish for practically nothing at CreateSpace (which happens to be owned by Amazon, so you would be sure to see your book there).

Since I have the nerdy gene, I also self-published my writings as an eBook (also for free). If you're interested, I can share some sites to use for that process as well.

Your book sounds interesting; I hope it sells well - then you can fund your x-wing addiction!

One can never have too little X-Wing ;-)

If you don't mind, I'd be interested in those book links. Just shoot me a PM and thanks!! :-)

Good luck on the book! I'd definitely give it a read. I feel yah on the temptation thing, I've got at least one of everything but I keep eyeballing more even though id have no use for it.

For eBook distribution I used Kindle Direct Publishing, as it is Amazon's own platform.

Their help topic page is here: https://kdp.amazon.com/help?topicId=A3R2IZDC42DJW6 (click on the "Do it Yourself Option" if you want to save money).

For distributing to other stores (Apple iBooks, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, and more) I used Smashwords. Rather than having to learn how to format my book for each store's requirements, Smashwords has you do one format and they will reformat it for each store for free. You can learn more about how their service works here: http://www.smashwords.com/about/how_to_publish_on_smashwords

Good luck publishing your book, whatever option ends up working for you.

I know what I said before. That I wasn't going to buy any of the latest wave until I've finished writing my book...

But tonight I cracked under pressure, and bought a single TIE Defender from the local Barnes & Noble.

I couldn't help it!

It's going to sit on the shelf next to my monitor, unopened. A source of inspiration as I press ahead. More than 70,000 words so far. It's going to be nicely between 75-100,000. Probably toward the higher end.

And when the manuscript is finished, I shall break the Defender out of its case, splurge on the rest of the wave, and finally allow myself to play more X-Wing Minis :)

You are stronger than I am. You are also much farther along. I am on my thesis for masters and I only have 26K (almost half done) and it is taking me SOOOO LONG

A masters thesis runs around 50,000 words? Dang! I had no idea. I'm slapping my head realizing that I could have gone for my masters in history! :D

Seriously though, I tip my hat to you good sir!

I think mine is going longer than it is supposed to be. Sent the first 20k or so to my prof and haven't gotten a response yet as to what I need to do differently. Hopefully he suggests some things that make my life easier.

You must be in a different field than me. If I submitted a draft of my dissertation with a word count of 50k, my adviser would probably send it back to me and tell me to make it shorter!
