Can F&D careers be Jedi?

By Ferretz, in General Discussion

Ok, strange topic, but let me explain. One idea for a campaign I've had in F&D is set during Order 66 instead of in the classic period.

So my question is if the careers in F&D could be used, without modifications, for novice Jedi, trained by Jedi Masters. Any thoughts?

From what I've understood from the Beta text, these careers are not true Jedi...

Eirik

I would say that they don't quite match up to the comic book-style antics of the Jedi we see in the SW:TCW, but yeah, they can definitely be used for Jedi of that era. In fact, the more XP you put into them, the closer you get to the masters of the pre-Imperial Republic.

I think they absolutely could. Starting characters are weaker than the Jedi we see, but I'd imagine they were the some of the elite anyway.

Yeah 100%, especially the Consular, Guardians, and Warriors.

Definitely.

Especially with Knight Level play (+150XP and a decent lightsaber) and a moderate progression of XP (defined as ~20XP per session before motivation is factored in) I think you could get away with creating a Padawan on the cusp of becoming a Jedi Knight that would grow into a full Jedi Knight fairly quickly and still have the feeling that your character has lots room to grow.

The mechanics are certainly there - it's just a matter of enough XP to realize it.

I'm not sure where you get that. They don't have the Jedi "brand" stuck to them, because the careers are intended to be flexible and widely applicable to a variety of settings. But I think any of these starting careers can be Jedi, at least younglings or Padawans. Being a Jedi is more about an adherence to a certain code than a specific career.

If you want to play independent Jedi who aren't following a master around, you'd probably want to add the 150XP Jedi Ronin mentioned. That's about the minimum you'd need to get an independent "Knight" level character.

If I remember correctly, the description of the Counsular says that these are not the same as Jedi Counsulars...

No one in the universe is looking at character sheets. You do not need a specific career to be a Jedi. You need to follow the code, be force sensitive and possibly carry a lightsaber. the first 2 options are really it.

Well Daeglan put it really simple, you follow the code and are force sensitive. In the republic era, you also needed to be a member of the jedi order also.

Actually I'm playing a Jedi campaign right now. We are right now in a prologue part in where we play Jedi younglings, study the code, ethics and principles of what it really means to be a Jedi. My PCs will soon become padawan learners and chosen by their masters and we will begin play the real adventure, with rules (the prologue is free form play) and I will use the Knight level play to represent the PCs as padawan learners.

Jedi are very much part of the game, their lore and morality permeates the the setting and their legacy haunts both the rebellion and the Empire. As for a mechanical "this is a Jedi" no, we don't get one, at least in the beta. That said I like how the D20 system handled becoming a knight, making it a prestige class. Something similar could be done here, a universal career that has the perquisite of the player needing to have say FR 2 and x amount of xp in force powers and force sensitive trees... Could work.... I dunk, might be dumb.

Again no one can see your sheet. Being a jedi is a fluff thing not a mechanical thing. The only mechanical requirement is to be force sensitive.

Nothing is really dumb, it's your idea why not submit it to the developers for beta testing see where it goes. If they like it they would add it let them decide.

I suspect the chapter concerning the Force in the final product will have entire pages devoted to what it means to play a Jedi. It should not be anything mechanical, it's pure narrative fluff. It's all in how your character acts and reacts. Every career in this book can be a Jedi career. Even the aggressor.

Good thing it seems ErikB, AliminumWolf, Sylpheed is banned again when interesting topics like this crop up!

Oh I'm sure they will pop up again, I mean we can't have constructive debate on the internet, now can we!

If the backstory warrants it, then any of the careers/specs could be former Jedi. Just because they don't have Lightsaber as a career skill doesn't mean they can't have at least some familiarity with the weapon (such as snagging a free rank as one of a Human's bonus non-career skills), or that they weren't formerly trained at the Jedi Temple when Order 66 came down.

They're just not going to be the amazingly capable individuals that we see in the films and other media, since those folks were at least Jedi Knight if not Jedi Masters, where the PCs never progressed past the Initiate/Padawan stage of their training.

I think only the AluminumWolf ID got banned. ErikB simply retired that handle for Sylpheed, and will probably come back at some point under a new handle but the same old boring antics.

I'd suggest Kowakian monkey-lizard.

Would allow us to use the the appropriate amount of respect.

I am sorry for derailing this thread...

On topic:

I totally agree with Donovan Morningfire, if the back story allows for it then knock yourself out!

I wonder if we by talking about it summons it's evil?

I think they can totally be Jedi. We're doing an Old Republic game, and I see no reason not to call the characters full Jedi. That said, our one force using character tried and failed to Telekenis a blaster to her hands three times last session, never succeeding, so she's still only a Jedi in the loosest of terms.

Not everyone has Vader's mad "gimme your blaster" skills. :D

Yeh, but this blaster was just sitting on the ground. :)
