Points formula in Excel (Good for custom card creators)

By melminiatures, in X-Wing

This is based on an Excel sheet Topo created. You can download the file here:

www.albertomelchorruizanton.net/mel_miniatures/Ships_Stats_formula_14_08_21.xlsx

You will have to fill out the properties your ship has:

_Unique

_Skill, Attack, Defense, Hull and Shields

_Focus, Lock, Barrel Roll, Boost, Evade, Cloak

_R2, R4, Crew, Missile, Torpedo, Turret, BFG, Bomb, System, Illicit and Elite

_Maneuvers:

To calculate manouvers, count each red manouver as 0,5 white manouvers as 1 and green as 2. Red K-Turns and red Full Stop count as 1 and wh ite K-Turns and white Full Stop count as 2.

_Skill:

This one has to be subjective. Basically if its a normal skill give it 1, if its a great skill give it a 2, and in the rare occasion of it being a defining skill give it a 3.

_4X8

This one is of no use yet. There are no 4x8 ships, although I make them sometimes.

_8x8

Large ship

_180

Forward and backwards attack like the Slave I

_360

Primary turret

Its not perfect, but in most cases the official ones are only off by 1 or 2 points.

Interesting, it's a starting point, but a few things should be pointed out.

  1. There is a significant difference between predicting the printed cost on the card, and predicting the actual value of the ship. It is well known that some ships' printed costs are significantly higher than their in-game value. If you want to more accurately predict a ship's value, then you'll need to do some more complicated math like I did in this thread here. The thread needs some updating, but the underlying fundamentals still hold. It's been able to fairly accurately predict ships' competitive performance, before they were released, for each of the 12 ships in waves 2-4.
  2. Using regression formulas based on prior data points to predict future ship values, without truly understanding the underlying fundamentals, is ultimately prone to failure. This particular weighting does better than most, but there are still some clear cases of ships being overcosted, and some being undercosted. If you were to use these values then you would significantly break game balance with several ships. (9 points for a Z-95?)

That all being said, your miniatures are fantastic and I am all about getting accurate point predictions in place for custom cards. At some point I'll overhaul my own spreadsheets (which have coefficients based on extensive MathWing scripts) and make them more user-friendly.
