Completly new player planning his first Deck

By Melindor, in Star Wars: The Card Game - Strategy

Hi!

I am planning my first 2 decks (light and dark). I checked all cards on the card builder and just thought what might be cool to play. Sooner or later I am going to own all cards I think, but for the start I just want a strong and competetive deck. This is really important, for me. I do not want to loose because of my deck build, but because of my own mistakes :-).

For the dark side I am planning a Sith / Navy deck.

Affiliation:
Imperial Navy
Objective: (10)
2x Fall of the Jedi (Core 19-1)
2x Counsel of the Sith (Core 20-1)
1x The Emperor's Web (Core 23-1)
2x Imperial Command (Core 26-1)
1x Reconnaissance Mission (Core 36-1)
2x The Executor Arrives (Escape from Hoth 66-1)

Unit: (26)
2x Darth Vader (Core 19-2)
2x Dark Side Apprentice (Core 19-3)
2x Advisor to the Emperor (Core 20-2)
2x Kuati Security Team (Core 20-3)
1x Emperor Palpatine (Core 23-2)
1x Emperor's Royal Guard (Core 23-3)
2x Admiral Motti (Core 26-2)
2x Duty Officer (Core 26-3)
2x Heavy Stormtrooper Squad (Core 26-4)
2x Heavy Stormtrooper Squad (Core 26-5)
1x Human Replica Droid (Core 36-2)
1x Human Replica Droid (Core 36-3)
2x Executor (Escape from Hoth 66-2)
2x ISB Liaison (Escape from Hoth 66-3)
2x ISB Liaison (Escape from Hoth 66-4)
Enhancement: (9)
2x Vader's Lightsaber (Core 19-4)
2x Sith Library (Core 20-4)
1x Sith Library (Core 23-4)
2x Orbital Bombardment (Core 26-6)
2x Sith Holocron (Escape from Hoth 66-5)
Event: (8)
2x Force Choke (Core 19-5)
2x Dark Precognition (Core 20-5)
1x Force Lightning (Core 23-5)
1x Force Choke (Core 23-6)
2x Aggression (Escape from Hoth 66-6)
Fate: (7)
2x Heat of Battle (Core 19-6)
2x Twist of Fate (Core 20-6)
1x Heat of Battle (Core 36-4)
1x Target of Opportunity (Core 36-5)
1x Twist of Fate (Core 36-6)

The plan is simple. Vader is just strong (the whole set), the counsel gives ressources, twist of fate and extra card, the emperor is strong, too with even more ressources. From the reconing mission is get an extra card, fate cards and this funny droids.
Last but not least: Imperial command for even more ressources, some standard troopers and the Executor (the reason for all the ressources I want).
So in the end I except getting more cards, some extra ressources and very much guns + some control
I have 7 Sith objectives and Navy affiliation, so no problem at all mixing this.
I could also imagine taking out executioner and imperial command for any combination of this:
1x Vader's Fist (The Battle of Hoth 62-1)
2x Agent of the Emperor (Lure of the Dark Side 104-1)
1x The Plan of the Prophetess (Knowledge and Defense 110-1)
or +1 Emperors Web.
Vaders fist provides lots of black pistols. Agent of the emperor brings mara jade and plan of the prohetess brings Sariss + removing force icons from opponents.

What do you think is more effectie ? Taking the navy parts for the executioner or going pure sith with going the Sariss, Mara Jade, second emperor... ?

Am I missing something important on my deck ?

To the light side:

I have no idea if this works. My idea was some sort in rushing:

Total Cards: (50)
Affiliation:
Rebel Alliance
Objective: (10)
2x The Defense of Yavin 4 (Core 8-1)
2x Renegade Squadron Mobilization (The Search for Skywalker 44-1)
2x Prepare for Evacuation (A Dark Time 49-1)
2x Raise the Stakes (Edge of Darkness 70-1)
2x Across the Anoat Sector (Edge of Darkness 74-1)

Unit: (28)
2x Red Two (Core 8-2)
2x Y-Wing (Core 8-3)
2x Renegade Squadron (The Search for Skywalker 44-2)
2x Renegade Squadron Operative (The Search for Skywalker 44-3)
2x Munitions Expert (The Search for Skywalker 44-4)
2x Renegade Squadron Escort (A Dark Time 49-2)
2x Renegade Squadron Escort (A Dark Time 49-3)
2x Action-series Bulk Transport (A Dark Time 49-4)
2x Blockade Runner (Edge of Darkness 70-2)
2x Cloud City Operative (Edge of Darkness 70-3)
2x Bothan Spy (Edge of Darkness 70-4)
2x Sleuth Scout (Edge of Darkness 74-2)
2x Sleuth Scout (Edge of Darkness 74-3)
2x Undercover Operative (Edge of Darkness 74-4)
Enhancement: (8)
2x Astromech Droid Upgrade (Core 8-4)
2x Hidden Outpost (Core 8-5)
2x Echo Caverns (The Search for Skywalker 44-5)
2x Smuggling Compartment (Edge of Darkness 70-5)
Event: (10)
2x Rebel Assault (Core 8-6)
2x Ion Cannon Burst (A Dark Time 49-5)
2x Swindled (Edge of Darkness 70-6)
2x Smuggler's Run (Edge of Darkness 74-5)
2x Over My Dead Body (Edge of Darkness 74-6)
Fate: (4)
2x Target of Opportunity (The Search for Skywalker 44-6)
2x Battle of Hoth (A Dark Time 49-6)

Raise the Stakes + across the anoat sector gives me 6 units, that like to attack alone (since only weak opponents can defend) + I get the option to deal extra damage if I kill all enemies.
Prepare for Evacuation gives me extremly resistant bombers. The defense of Yavin gives me even more cheap bombers and fighters + a way to get ressources, while the renegade squadron gives me a ship with many focus symbols. I think the tactic is obvious.
Does this work or is it better to have a strong fighting force ? Did I miss something out, that would help to make this combination playable or even stronger ?
I could also imagine something like this:
otal Cards: (50)
Affiliation:
Jedi
Objective: (10)
2x A Hero's Journey (Core 1-1)
2x The Secret of Yavin 4 (Core 5-1)
2x Trust Me (Edge of Darkness 71-1)
1x Watchers in the Wasteland (Balance of the Force 91-1)
1x The Flight of the Crow (Knowledge and Defense 107-1)
2x May the Force Be With You (Join Us or Die 112-1)

Unit: (24)
2x Luke Skywalker (Core 1-2)
2x Twi'lek Loyalist (Core 1-3)
2x C-3PO (Core 5-2)
2x Guardian of Peace (Core 5-3)
2x Guardian of Peace (Core 5-4)
2x Lando Calrissian (Edge of Darkness 71-2)
2x Saboteur (Edge of Darkness 71-3)
1x Obi-Wan Kenobi (Balance of the Force 91-2)
1x Shistavanen Wolfman (Balance of the Force 91-3)
1x Shistavanen Wolfman (Balance of the Force 91-4)
1x Moldy Crow (Knowledge and Defense 107-2)
1x Ruusan Colonist (Knowledge and Defense 107-3)
1x Ruusan Colonist (Knowledge and Defense 107-4)
2x Yoda (Join Us or Die 112-2)
2x Dagobah Nudj (Join Us or Die 112-3)
Enhancement: (12)
2x Jedi Lightsaber (Core 1-4)
2x Trust Your Feelings (Core 1-5)
2x Dagobah Training Grounds (Core 1-6)
2x Cloud City Casino (Edge of Darkness 71-4)
1x Force Cleansing (Balance of the Force 91-5)
1x Valley of the Jedi (Knowledge and Defense 107-5)
2x Dagobah Training Grounds (Join Us or Die 112-4)
Event: (7)
2x Lightsaber Deflection (Core 5-5)
2x Sabotage (Edge of Darkness 71-5)
1x My Ally Is the Force (Knowledge and Defense 107-6)
2x Yoda, You Seek Yoda (Join Us or Die 112-5)
Fate: (7)
2x Twist of Fate (Core 5-6)
2x Target of Opportunity (Edge of Darkness 71-6)
1x Supporting Fire (Balance of the Force 91-6)
2x Seeds of Decay (Join Us or Die 112-6)

Tactic is simple again:
Secret of Yavin has guardians for my expensive characters. Obi-Wan, Luke and Yoda are my strong characters, while Lando can help me faking attacks with pulling me out of fights. The flight of the crow gives me cheap characters, that I can commit to the force and that give me an advantage. My ally is the force can be a real game changer or just 3 tokens for edgebattles :-). And it has a strong ressource card.
What do you think, is this kind of deck better than my cheap-ship rush idea ? Do I miss some good cards here ? I have very limited experience with the game, so I am happy about help.

I'm a little short on time to give you a full analysis right now (I'll try to remember to come back to it), but your Jedi deck won't work as Trust Me is Smuggler affiliation only and Flight of the Crow is Jedi affiliation only.

Correctly stated by dbmeboy, but the first DS deck you posted was a very successful dark deck last year. Your first LS deck also was very successful. I would start with them.

Welcome to the game!

Hi!

To read that something was "successful last year" is not really saying much in a living card game. 1 year of new overpowered releases can easily make it the worst deck ever :-).

I think I like my dark one and it also consists of many things from the starter, so I can't make many mistakes.

But I am really unsure for the light side. I like the idea of rushing with many small toyships, but I have no idea if this idea will even work. So what is more successful in the end ? This kind of rush or something around the well known light characters of the star wars universe ?

OK, I changed my opinion.

I have some very strong characters (Luke, Yoda, Obywan, Chewy) + something to keep them alive (wookie live debt + yavin).
I also have normal fighters, that can come back from the discard pile. I should also be able to compete for the force struggle thanks to the characters (elite or similar rules make them interesting targets) and along the gamor run.

That's pretty close to what I was running at GenCon (instead of Chewie had Falcon x1 and Kyle Katarn x1), which did pretty well for me.

Yep, the LS deck you wrote is VERY competitive at the moment.

Also, FWIW, the DS has not progressed as much as the LS; the cards they got are neat, but very few sets have become staples, especially as main sets. There are some great support sets like Slave Trade that see a lot of play, but nothing as revolutionary as Gamor or May the Force be with You. What this means is that if you want to play it, do so, because it will not necessarily win or lose more than any other DS build.
