Reading only for the fluff?

By Zewen, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I'm a big fan of the Star Wars lore and I was thinking of getting the book just for the fluff and background information on the Star Wars universe.

Of course being able to play and enjoy the game would be a plus but this is less likely to happen as my place don't really have a strong RPG-community.

So what is your opinion on just getting the core and supplements purely for reading?

Thanks

When it comes to fluff. My favorite book out of this line is "Suns of Fortune" its a source book set in the Corellian Sector. It's so fluffy I could choke.

Thanks to things like Roll20 you don't necessarily need a local group.

this!

Also, go to your LGS and ask around. Sometimes you find tons of people wanting to play that do not talk about it.

Once after commenting about RPG seven people came to me saying "i always wanted to play, but never had the chance"

Zewen, two things. First, like everyone above has said, Roll20 and your FLGS are potential spots to get a chance to play (not to mention conventions like GenCon).

Second, as one of the writers on these books, I can tell you that when I write these things, I'm thinking about the readers like you while I write. There are a fair number of buyers, I imagine, that are also fans of the Star Wars essential guide series of books and the like that just want to read it for content, but might never actually get a chance to play.

Obviously, a location based sourcebook like Suns of Fortune is going to provide you with the most fluff for your buck. The career sourcebooks are also very fluffy, if limited to one aspect of life in the galaxy. The adventure modules are unique stories to play through, so by their very nature, they are fluff products, but they aren't necessarily as jam packed with bits of lore like Suns is. Either way, you should be satisfied. I know 20 some years ago, when I started buying WEG Star Wars books, I didn't really have anyone to play with. I loved all the new lore presented in those, though. I hope the books I work on can be as entertaining to non-players as the hardcore campaigners.

Appreciate all the informative replies. I will definitely check out the recommendations.

The core book is filled with good stuff, but a lot of it is the game rules and careers and whilst the fluff section is good, I would imagine if you're a Star Wars fan you might have a lot of that already.

Get Suns of Fortune. It's crammed with material you'll like. Also, whilst it's an adventure, Jewel of Yavin has quite a lot of background material for Cloud City. I don't want to oversell it - it's still primarily an adventure. But it's setting rich for what it is.

But anyway, just because it's true - Suns of Fortune. Lots of good fluff and less likely to have come across it before. Not that I would discourage the main book if you have the money.

I know I created a LOT of new lore for Centerpoint Station specifically for Suns of Fortune, as well as Crollia and Soronia.

It's a little expensive just for lore purposes, but for being ready to play a fun game it's a small price to pay.
