The Woodlands - End of Talisman?

By ninepointone, in Talisman

Short of a Misaktonic Horror which refers to bits from all the other sets, I think we can say that Talisman is done.

I won't disagree mightily, but I would have you consider that many gamers thought the same before Woodland; that Fate's 2 sided coins would never mean anything, for example.

Since the small expansions have always added various fantasy themes; Bloodmoon/Supernatural, Frostmarch/Ice Queen and Wintery menace, Firelands/Djinn and middle eastern concepts, etc. - this would mean there still could be stuff to explore.

Although Timescape is probably DOA, 'time travel' might still work, or some idea pertaining to that. The Hidden Valley space in the middle region shows dinosaurs - so why can't a theme relating to that work. "Option to stay on the space, after encountering the initial 3 cards. You state intent and then must draw 1 or more cards from a Hidden Valley 'deck' where you may encounter dinosaurs or other prehistoric things.

The Castle! Castles are large in my estimation, filled with secret rooms, towers, passages etc. Again, you state your intent to explore the castle and draw from another deck. Maybe you have to fight a baron who's trying to assassinate the king (= rewards!). Or secret passages that can take you to the Dungeon (I favor the Library space there), or other spaces on the main board or elsewhere.

So, these sound more like POD type expansions, and would be more supplemental than big changes. A "graveyard" POD could include an option for good characters(as well as evil or neutral) to explore more (a protective cross, or the one(s) that destroy spirits, could be repurposed as a charm or amulet. Certainly searching tombs, graves etc would provide menace and reward. An option to have a séance or meeting with long gone heroes or kings, etc. that could give similar rewards to some in the Warlock Quest rewards or like / similar to the new Destiny cards in Woodland.

So far I've named POD possible expansions to spaces on the main board, since FFG may not favor sets that "must" have other sets, but that could be an option too.

Perhaps a certain object, or Follower, etc, could help you traverse the ruined mine in the Highlands to the mines in the Inner region. There would have to be a cost, more than losing a turn for the travel time, or an encounter that takes place in the lost turn (Fighting subterranean types? Morlocks?).

A special Key or again a follower that can help you discover another way out of the Jail, to the Dungeon - - what would happen if a player had to fight out of the Cell down there?

I think there could certainly be some PODs around new concepts. Maybe I'll think more on other bigger and board type expansions as well. But I don't favor anything that needs more table/space and I'm not sure about replacing other boards already in the game. Boardlets, between the corners where space allows are still an option. As the old Timescape was limitless in terms of spaces/encounters, an ocean or large lake could be re-constructed as such too.

0beron, be honest with us, do You REALLY want the Jurassic Park and the Lost World in the Talisman?

(I don't mind though as long as the Timescape will be added too.)

Though, while Your option for the Hidden Valley (we then really would get the Lost World in the Talisman), I don't think FFG will ever make a separate deck for just 1 space ;) .

I have some mixed opinions on dinosaurs (but note that I mentioned several other ideas as well), Nemomon, but I take the cue from someone else (?) who mentioned the little dinosaurs on the space - I had actually never really noticed. If nothing else, it could be 'perverted' to a space where you must draw Dragon cards, LOL.

As far as separate decks/per spaces, well we do have the Nether Realm, which has *no* space, other than house rules or brews.

I go along, to get along. If the Powers That Be, decide to recreate a Timescape, I will buy and play. Likewise anything approaching the various ideas me and others have.

So, yeah, a lot of pipe dreams, or j__k- off thoughts. But with some of my other ideas, the basic thought is 'linkage' between the main and corner boards or between corners and corners.

The idea of a secret passage in the Castle going to other places like the Dungeon, is appealing. Ditto a passage or way to go between the Temples. Why should the elf have all the fun?

Whether I can use the Rune Gate card overlays or not, the idea of leaving at least 1 as permanent (as can be) in each realm would probably take care of most of that.

Therefore, thematic ideas should be the focus. Since we have Firelands, Frostmarch and Blood Moon, how about

Bird People Kingdom in the sky; backstory: enemies of the Dragons?

Subterranean races - mostly about the Goblin, and comes to you from Ruins or Crags (on the main board)
