Smooth Talker ? Knowledge specialization ??

By JP_JP, in Game Mechanics

These 2 talents do roughly the same thing... but each is worded differently...

Knowledge specialization :

When the character first acquires this talent, he may choose one Knowlede skill. When making checks with that skill, he may spend Destiny to gain additional successes equal to his ranks in Knowledge Specialization.

Smooth Talker :

When a character acquires this talent, he chooses one skill : Charm, Coercion, Negotiation, or Deception. When making checks with that skill, he may spend Destiny to gain additional successes equal to his ranks in Smooth Talker.

What I want to know... do you pick another skill for this talent to work when you get another rank from it ? When I buy the first rank, I choose Deception for Smooth Talker. When I buy a second rank, can I choose charm to work with it too ?

Thanks

Yes you chose different skills every rank of Smooth talker.

Yes you chose different skills every rank of Smooth talker.

No, you choose one skill for Smooth Talker, and that's all you get. Same with Knowledge Specialization, in that you choose one type of Knowledge to benefit from the talent.

Oh yes, you are completely correct Donovan. I must have been drunk or something, must have thought on a completely different talent or something. But yes Donovan is right.

To be fair, a lot of folks did think that Smooth Talker allowed you to select a different skill with each new rank, and there are probably some that have been using this system since the EotE Beta days that still do.

Generally, talent ranks don't give you two benefits. In the case of these talents, ranks give you extra successes. If they also gave you additional skills, you'd get two separate benefits for your ranks, which would make them outshine other ranked talents that don't do that. Some talents, like Gearhead, give you a benefit for the ranks (removing setback) and a benefit just for having the talent (halve cost of adding mods), but I can't think of one where rank itself gives you double benefits. I may be wrong, of course, so someone please correct me if you know of one.
