Woodland Character Strategies

By Artaterxes, in Talisman

Hey all,

To hype up The Woodland some more, let's discuss tactics! I'll start with the Spider Queen.

Her web tokens let her cling to the good spaces and even bounce between good ones. For example, suppose she lands on the Fountain of Wisdom.

Turn 1. Drink from the Fountain.

Turn 2. Web the Fountain, move off and encounter Space B (another good space, say Healer).

Turn 3. Web the Healer, then move back to the webbed Fountain. Flip the web token on the Fountain to the crawler side. Drink from the Fountain again.

Turn 4. Web the Fountain again, move towards Healer (discard crawler token because you "made a roll," i.e. movement roll, and you can use the +1 movement to let you reach the Healer again).

Repeat!

Downside... another player can also stick themselves to the good spaces.

You can also bounce between spaces like the Temple and Castle using the above, except you can use the +1 to add to your Temple roll instead of your movement roll.

Finally, if you uncover a bad space stands between an opponent and treasure, you can web the bad space, blocking them off the treasure! As an example, you land on a Dragon and to your left is an opponent, and to your right is the Magic Stream. Web the Dragon on your next turn, then if they try to go past the Dragon, they'll get caught in the web and have to fight it. The token will turn to the crawler side, so they'll have -1 to their attack score in the battle.

Any other strategies for Spider Queen or other characters that come to mind?

Seen the preview for the siderqueen already. And photocopied the card and played with it. Yes the Spider Queen is interesting but in my game I found she spent most of her time waiting for other players (or herself) to draw the right cards. I think I was just unlucky hehehe.

All the characters are very good and they all add very interesting gaming ideas strategies now I can play with light and dark fate :) .

Wow, that is rather thought out well. You, would be a most competitive and tricky player.

I do get the feeling that we these new characters, the best benefits will come with more than two, or even three players. I wonder how well some this will work in my 2 player games. Still they are so enchanting. The Woodland seems well worth waiting for. Seems "dripping with magic". Since the flavor text in the beginning of the rules mentions the Norns, which / whom already exists in a card or two from previous sets, I wonder if they appear in new cards or spaces as well.

Thank you Oberon :)

Yeah, that is very likely to happen on the main board. If you go deep inside a corner Region (Dungeon, Highland and Woodland) you may be far enough from others to exploit the strategy. This might work in the Middle Region if other characters are far away, so the Spider Queen should try to stay there as long as she can. However, hoping to draw a pool card is not something I will base my game upon. The Temple abuse could be a good strategy though.

Web tokens seem a good way to slow down characters chasing you. Drop a Web token and go ahead. Other characters must stop there or go the other way around (on the main board) and you gain at least a turn of advantage in movement. Especially good if you're running towards the Lord of Darkness or the Portal of Power. It might also counter the usual move to attack Spider Queen on the Plain of Peril and steal her Talisman.

These tokens can be placed in the Inner Region, so she can drop then on the challenges to annoy her opponents, or force them to take the Strength Path with Dice with Death instead. She can also save them for a Crown fight against characters, because she can drop them on the Crown of Command and use them in combat to add 1 to her attack roll and subtract 1 from the opponent's roll.

Not sure if there might be many tokens on the same space, apparently yes. Probably you can't use more than 1 Crawler token per roll. In any case, since Web tokens are flipped only when a character ends his movement in their space, the 3 tokens will give you a bonus for 2-3 attacks and not more. They can make the difference in short and close Crown fights, though.

Ha! He said "temple abuse" (such a dirty mind, me)

But I thought nothing implicitly forbade dropping her webs in the Inner region. Cool strategy.
