"New" Chapter Homeworlds

By Zaukodar, in Deathwatch

Another fluff-related question regarding Space Marine homeworlds, but I was curious if there was a precedent for a Space Marine Chapter acquiring a new homeworld? More specifically, is there a story that relatively holds to the following pattern?

  • Space Marine Chapter is founded and established on its homeworld, complete with a shiny Fortress Monastery and all the goodies that come with it.
  • Through a series of unfortunate events, deliberate or otherwise, the Chapter loses its homeworld and all its shinies but otherwise survives and is forced to become fleet-based.
  • After X amount of time and Y amount of events the Chapter successfully claims or is given by edict (or both) a new homeworld and is able to re-establish itself on it, complete with a brand new Fortress Monastery with all the trimmings and treats.

I've been pondering such a thing in writing the fluff for my own Space Marine Chapter, but was unaware if such a thing had happened before, or whether it was even possible. I am aware that Chapter homeworlds are significant investments for the Imperium and not lightly or frequently made.

I want to say yes, but i'm having a hard time thinking of the chapters off the top of my head. I want to say there was a side bar in the books talking about how the DW line is played out before chapter ???? lost its homeworld to treachery which then got re-established elsewhere.

The Red Scorpions were a fleet-based chapter for a long time (I think it was because no world had a large enough population that were pure enough for their standards) until they came across one during a Crusade. Now they recruit solely from the infants of that world alone. That's right, infants; don't even wait for them to learn how to walk.

Brazen claws : homeworld destroyed by chaos daemons, they took to their fleet and were making plans to rebuild when they were ambushed by traitor marines. Chapter is suspected to have fallen.

then there is the Crimson fists , altough they only lost their monastery.

They had a nice cosy homeworld with fortress monastery and all, then an ork waaag (Snagrod i think) full on invaded thema nd at the hight of the fighting a crimson fists missile launched form the monastery missifires, falls back down, somehow (foul play is expected )hits the armory and BOOOM no more chapter monastery. But rather than abodning their world and going fleet, they stayed and fought guerillia style in most cases untill they reclaimed it.

Other chapters that lost their homeworld:

Dark Angels : fortres monastery built on the Rock, a large piece of their former homewsorld of Caliban.

Invaders : Homeworld destroyed in retalion by Atailoc craftworld eldar.

Sythes of the Emperor : Homeworld consumed by tyranids, almost wiped out but seeking to rebuild.

All the TRAITOR LEGIONS actualy: After the siege of Terra they fled in the warp. While their homeworlds were destroyed they claimed daemon worlds in the warp for themselves as their new homeworlds.

Thats ok, on Catashan they gotta be able to shoot before they can walk. :)

I was aware of all the homeworlds that have been lost-lost! I'm just looking for Chapters who settle in and establish roots in a new one after losing their first. I also don't tend to count the Traitor Legions, since the Warp can do a bunch of stuff not otherwise possible in the Materium. :)

The Fire Hawks have had a couple of homeworlds. Here is an extract from their wiki entry:

"They have the dubious distinction of being one of the few Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes to have lost not one but two Chapter homeworlds . After being nearly driven to extinction during the Badab War , the Fire Hawks' mobile fortress-monastery , the ancient Void Fortress Rapturous Rex, was lost in the Warp in 963.M41. It is now believed that the survivors of this disaster became the cursed Astartes known collectively as the Legion of the Damned . The Fire Hawks were a fleet-based Chapter, though they have in the past ruled over at least two former home worlds. Today however, these worlds are blasted wastes, consumed by the wars of the Age of the Imperium ."

Star Phantoms are a good example. They've lost a couple of home worlds, I believe. Their last one was destroyed by Hrud, then they went fleet based, then they resettled on one of Badab's moons after the Badab War.

The Relictors were forced to become fleet-base after the Inquisition rescinded the Chapter's feudal rights to the world of Torva Minoris and sentenced the Marines to a 100 years penitent crusade. As this happened towards the end of M41, and GW's timeline does not extend past the end of that millennium, no reclamation is documented - but technically, they ought to be able to reclaim a homeworld after having served their sentence.

Does that count?

The Alpha Legion's homeword wasn't destroyed because its A MYSTERY!

Ah yes slight oversight on my part. Ofcourse thanks to the HH "Legion" novel one could wonder if the Alpha legion ever truly turned traitor... :) For a long time the fate of Angrons homeworld was left undecided untill the HH novel "Betrayer" told what happened... (and it was awesome)

That whole story is just awesome. It really reinforces Lorgar's level of asshattedness as well.

That's Lorgar for ya! He may be a whiney ****** at times but sometimes i agree with him. Like when he bitchslaps malcador the sigilte. You can hear him think, "my dad is to good to come and talk to me himself, well ef him and you to!" :)

I mean Its not like he ever chastised Angron, Curze or Russ for completly butchering his enemies. (Ok Curze got close)

Even with Magnus it's a trial and a "son i are dissapoint don't do it again" speech.

With Lorgar he mind ***** his entire legion into kneeling while their masterwork city gets nuked! No wonder he got twisted.
