Debris Cloud Deployment Rules

By cody campbell, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Sorry...I know this has been discussed before, but the search function on this forum is horrendous. (Google-ing produces more results than the internal search feature...hah!)

I understand the game effects of the cloud. No need to discuss this.

However, I'm interested in knowing if there are any rulings regarding the deployment of Debris Clouds.

-Who decides to use clouds vs asteroids?

-Is there a limit?

-Are they tournament legal? (since technically R. Aces hasn't be "released"?)

-Am I jumping the gun?

I don't know about you guys, but when I play, I usually provide all the obstacles, or my opponent does. We don't mix our 'roids. Does that mean you have to mark your clouds, then announce "Instead of placing an asteroid, I'm placing a debris cloud!" or does it get added to the "obstacle pool" and either player can place it, regardless of ownership?

For those of you who have used them, what is your procedure?

(again, sorry if this has been discussed! I looked, I swear!)

I'm going to assume there are scenarios that come with the ship expansions that have the debris clouds. The reference card says they are treated in the same fashion as the asteroids. But you do raise a good point. They do have subtle differences, so who does get to decide asteroids or debris?

So far as I know, there aren't any official rules yet.

The current Vassal tournament is making a pool with one of each token, so 12 total at 6/6, then placing normally. Each player, when they place their obstacle, can choose one or the other.

I assume we'll get an official update to the tournament rules once they're generally available.

There is a scenario in the Outrider's box that actually is solo Dash kitted out with upgrades from the kit vs like six TIE fighters and you use all six asteroids and all three debris clouds that came with them.

I hope we get to choose when placing. There's a interesting play where you place a debris field near your deployment and fly through it on turn one so you have a stress to remove turn two for a Kyle Katarn crew member card trigger. Not tier one play but interesting.

I've suggested a rule with my group that seems to work well with asteroid and debris placement for casual games. What my idea (think I saw it here on the forums) was, when it's your turn to place an obstacle, you roll an attack die:

Blank or Focus - pick and place 1 asteroid following normal rules
Hit - pick and place 1 debris cloud following normal rules
Critical Hit - pick and place 1 asteroid and 1 debris cloud following normal rules

This will give you 6-12 obstacles though I don't know if you can legally place all 12 obstacles on the map.
