Lefttenant Lorrir

By Baron Soontir Fel, in X-Wing

As much as I love Lorrir and flying him, he's lacking an option that only PtL Interceptor can do and pretty much the reason why a lot of people prefer PtL over any other EPT: Turtle Up.

This is it right here. But I do think there is still design space (for House Rules) for PS5 Interceptors that don't have an EPT. Their cost needs to be right, and the pilot ability needs to be good enough to justify it. It would be really cool to see mid range squints that don't have PtL!

I think we are slowly getting there since wave 4.

Stress is becoming more and more a threat so using PtL can be risky. Starting a turn with 2 stress token can mean the end of your Interceptor or forcing him to get out for a while. I believe that the flechette cannon will be yet another way to deal stress.

Field Officer will help your action economy by potentially giving a focus to 2 of your Interceptors. The need for PtL to allow you to turtle up will be less present. I'm thinking predator or outmaneuver on a Interceptor that can do a barrel roll or boost and still have a focus token can be very threatening.

Unless you plan on using him close to his mates, lonewolf on Turr or Tetran can be very good. I don't know if you ran the math yet, but surely a defensive reroll on a 3 agility ship is nice. Either way, I'm already used to using predator or VI on those two instead of PtL, so it should not be that bad.

There is also the Autothruster modification that the developper said Interceptors pilot will love, maybe it's good enough so you don't feel as compelled to run your squint with PtL, and since Interceptors can equip 2 mod but rarely do so because of the lack of variety and cheap ones, it could not be at a better place to help, just need to know if it's a cheap mod or not.

My problem with the Alpha is that for 2 pts less I can take Backstabber, who, for all purposes besides blocking, is the superior bargin. You lose boost and a little bit of dial but gaining PS 6 is huge. Those 2pts are usually better spent upgrading elsewhere or for an init bid.

that

Are people seriously arguing for cheaper priced squints!? :/ Wild. In our play group we nicknamed the threads namesake Lt. LOL-ir because he can just troll-a-roll you. If the falcon problem goes away(yes I see it as aproblem, whatevs) squints could come back in a huge way.

I wanted to like Lorrir but no matter what I did, he always got one-shotted whenever I used him. It didn't matter the dice results. I took my cue.

Exactly. If there were fewer turrets Lorrir might be good, but as it is he's just going to be one-shotted again and again no matter where he goes.

not

I know that this is easier said than done and certainly don't mean to suggest that turrets don't hamper the advantages of our maneuverability; they do so, certainly, but they pay to do so. It seems to me, however, that our dial will still have some advantages; that maneuverability is not linked only to arc dodging. The ability to jump range bands or shed stress is still viable. They question, in my mind, is how to best take advantage of these benefits.

As much as I love Lorrir and flying him, he's lacking an option that only PtL Interceptor can do and pretty much the reason why a lot of people prefer PtL over any other EPT: Turtle Up.

EDIT: I somehow missed Red Castle's excellent post, but +1 to all of those ideas. Wave 4 was a wonderful shake up of the meta-game. The new stress heavy environment hasn't really turned up for me, but I love how it makes the interceptor's dial even more important. Fleet Officer seems absolutely lovely and I can't wait to run a Deci-Squint squad.

I do still worry that PTL is always better than the other options for pilots with an EPT slot, but I am curious how these others work out. I have absolutely started running Phennir with a Predator and have broadly enjoyed it, though I'm not totally persuaded it's better.

Defibrillating this thread and making my first post on this forum just to say I love this pilot. So much.

I'm relatively new, but I'm always looking for ways to improve the casual experience for new players.

That said, tonight I have a couple people coming over for a scenario I'm calling "X-Wing: High Noon." Maybe some of you all have done something similar.

Four ships start at the center facing away from the largest asteroid. Four pretty good pilots, assigned *randomly* to the players. Then, I have one shield upgrade, one hull upgrade, and two secondary weapons, again, assigned randomly. Finally, four EPTs assigned randomly.

Every man for himself.

The pilots are:

  • Darth Vader
  • Luke Skywalker
  • Jake Farrell
  • Lt. Lorrir (yes, he does not natively have an EPT/TL - he is assumed to have them in this scenario only)

I'm worried that I've broken my own scenario just by having him in there. :D

The thing with Lorrir or Kanos and fleet officer is: why wouldn't you just take a ptl interceptor anyway and have even more options? There will be times when you don't have the 2-3pts needed for it and can consider Lorrir (Kir still needs an evade passer). They don't suddenly become as good as PTL interceptors because they have a focus token, they still lack the options and ability to react that interceptors thrive on. If you can easily get 3 actions a turn, why settle for 2?

Fleet officer + TC on a PTL interceptor means either getting out of arc or getting into range 1 AND getting 4 hits with TL AND the focus token. Going to hit pretty hard. Hopefully auto thrusters won't take an action (hopefully they'll be PTL light: action economy) in the mod slot.
