Will we see Uglies?

By barabelsftw, in X-Wing

C'mon uglies are as much star wars as anything else and they been around ages, would you rather we get coral skippers?

if I'm going to join the "DO NOT WANT" bandwagon, what I really DO NOT want to see from the EU would be ...

Sun_Crusher_EGF.jpg

... the Suncrusher. (AKA Indestructible Munchkin Ice Cream Cone of DOOOOOM!)

Worried about a Star Destroyer? Just fly this thing THROUGH the bridge with even scratching your paint. Or, you know, just blow up the sun and the entire solar system and wipe out everything on the table but yourself. This puppy is tough enough to park inside a gas giant (Yavin) with no harm done. Put this guy on the table, and if it's a last-man-standing scenario, it's GAME OVER, MAN! And somehow the Empire was just SITTING on this thing (super top secret!) when the Battle of Endor rolled around.

That, and I think it's actually less eye-pleasing than a good many Ugly designs.

They ought to announce it as an April Fool's joke with a bogus CGI rendering. :)

Dear god I hope not. Fewer things in Star Wars are more stupid then Uglies.

While I like the concept of uglies, they make no flipping sense at all.

Some guy digging through a junkyard of parts has enough to make a Tie fighter or a Y wing, but instead decides to make two ugly fighters that both suck. Thats the issue here, you almost never see uglies alone, they are part of a squad of uglies used by pirates, but they always seem to have enough parts to make several normal fighters and they just choose to build horrible merged versions of them.

This is what always bugs me. Say you sit down to build the Z-ceptor pictured upthread: you have at least the fuselage of an Interceptor, and some of the fuselage and most of the guts of a Headhunter (including laser cannons, an acceleration couch, cockpit instrumentation and electronics, and engines). You also have at least a semi-functioning astromech droid.

And from those things, you decide not to create a rebuilt (if nonstandard) TIE Interceptor, or a rebuilt Headhunter, but some sort of unholy Frankenstein's Starfighter?

Now, with all that said, I'll admit some fondness for the Twi'lek Chir'daki fighter (image from here):

It's more of a radical modification of the X-wing with a specific design intent, rather than a haphazard collision of starfighter bits, and I like the look and idea of it a lot better.

Ya, the uglies have always had a Dr Moreau feeling to them. No real logic, simply mixed up because they can be!

I could see the Deathseed. Maybe. Other than that, (not that they aren't cool) I think uglies will only exist in custom missions. The Blades, too, probably....

seriously if i was going to build an ugly and i do have extensive aircraft building/working experience it would be much much easier to stay with one air frame/ space frame and build it back to or better than original specs... I am thinking a 3 or 4 engine Y fighter with a two man crew would be cool!!! or if you going to build an ugly take the best parts of the ships and combine them... Y fighter turret cockpit X-wing body and engines!!! just seems like they are always combining the WORST aspects of two ships to make an ugly....

This thread... please...

How dare you. This is part of the holy EU of which nothing bad can be said. Disney is defiling Star Wars by erasing this from the Star Wars universe.

I don't want to see them in game because the logic behind them is really silly and they mostly just look plain awful. However given the introduction of S&V, it is reasonably likely that we may see some in the future.

The logic is they can't afford New or even used fighters so they get leftovers from scrap yards and build what they can.

Sure it makes sense to make an y-wing if you have all the bits but any fighter is better than no fighter so if all you have is a tie cockpit and the Ys hull you weld em together.

It would let them make ships under 12 points as well as they'd be pretty shocking stats and movement wise, some would only get one attack so even as a swarm they are not that strong.

Do we really want to see players bumping uglies? :o

the Scyk is from the most popular Star Wars game to ever exist (except maybe X-wing/Tie series).

I thought the Scyk was from Galaxies?

Except it's not that simple. They use different power sources, engines, wiring. You'd need to ensure a good seal which would require further work. It would be far cheaper to simply trade them for what you actually need to finish one ship. Ask anyone who has done an engine swap in a car if it was cheaper than just getting the same engine as was in there before. Grafting two spaceships together would be much much worse.

seriously when the F-14 went from the TF-30 engine to the F-110 they practically had to build a new air-frame!!! aloong with different full feeds/pumps wiring cooling ducts intake diameter etc..... with the newer 16s they built it with a bigger air-frame and intake to accommodate different engines and even the same with the 15 but to a lessor extent...

I really dig the Z-Ceptor, I would totally fly a swarm of those crazy frankenstein bests. I don't see FFG making any uglies, their role is already filled by the Scyk and Z-95.

The next S&V ship will probably fill the large base 360 primary weapon role, Dengar's JM5000 is my guess.

I prefer to play naboo fighters before uglies. And i hate naboo fighter's looks.

I just like the crazy Mad Max in Space idea of it.

I bet they don't cut the ass cheeks off their flight suits though.

Every single one of those look like absolute crap. Talk about a part of the EU that needs to die ASAP... Ugh.

Player one: "There's no way I'm buying any uglies. I hope FFG doesn't make them."

Player two: "Did you see FFG's website this morning? They spoiled wave 7, they're all uglies, and the meta just blew up. You won't be able to field a tier one squad without them."

Player one: "Hang on a second......I am pre-ordering them on my smart phone."

What does it all mean? If FFG makes them, you will buy them, but you can pretend all you want for now.

They won't do uglies because they would be worth less than 12 points in most cases. And introducing only the good uglies wouldn't be any fun.

I want to see a chir'daki, and chiss claw craft, come out, that would be awesome

I love the EU. I'll admit it's been awhile since I've read all the books but I've read all the post clone wars books and I don't remember phantoms and sycks popping up much more than uglies. After looking up defenders I can say I was hasty dumping in the defender with the rest. I only meant to convey that we shouldn't dismiss ships for this game solely on the basis of how often they appear in the books movies and games. We should pick ships that are good additions to the game. I can say that uglies probably won't help the game much but that's up to ffg to make it work (which they're really good at doing imo.)

The Phantom, appears in 2 video games, the reason FG used it is because of the cool cloaking mechanic, and the Scyk is a mainstay of Star Wars Galaxies. SWG is pretty big in terms of popularity, so that's why we see ships that are solely from it. (Scyk, Decimator)
