You destroy your target + Fire-Control System + Weapons Engineer; does Weapons Engineer kick in?

By MajorJuggler, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Pretty simple question, but I haven't run into the answer yet despite some searching.

Hypothetical scenario: A TIE Phantom equipped with Fire-Control System and Weapons Engineer shoots at Biggs, and kills him. Wedge is within range 3 of the TIE Phantom.

Biggs is destroyed.

Does the Phantom gain a TL on Biggs before he is removed from play, thereby allowing him to gain a TL on Wedge?

I assume that the TIE Phantom does not transiently gain a TL on the ship about to be removed, which means that Weapons Engineer does not trigger, but I couldn't definitively find an answer to the timing.

No, the ship is immediately removed from play and therefore is not a valid TL target (which would prevent Weapons Engineer from doing anything either).

The one exception would be if the ship was the same PS as you and was not yet removed due to the Simultaneous Fire rule.

Or if the target ship was Fel's Wrath.

Not that simple I think. I would posit that FCS does activate, it is just you don;t maintain lock a destroyed target. So that would mean that Weapons Engineer does activate.

I would be interested to see if the next FAQ covers this. But I would happily house rule that the engineer allows the second lock.

The last step of an attack is Deal Damage, and dead ships are immediately removed from play. The ship won't be around after the attack for FCS to trigger. X-Wing has a permissive rules set, so unless we missed where it says that you can acquire a TL on a nonexistent ship, you can't.

I have to agree with our resident Ork here. FCS triggers after the attack, and there's nothing left to target lock on to. Weapons Engineer triggers when you acquire a target lock, so there's no lock to trigger him either.

The only scenario that would possibly allow it, would be under the Simultaneous Attack rule with two ship of the same PS, and then you've still got to have the initiative to pull it off.

Thanks all. I assumed this is the way it would work. It would be nice to see it included in the next FAQ.
