Not enough upgrade cards - What's the standard procedure?

By jimjim19681968, in X-Wing

Hi, We're quite new but really enjoying the game.

Last night my buddy put the mod upgrade "Stealth Device" (from Slave 1)on a couple of TIE Fighters. He wanted more but we only have two cards. He scribbled it on a piece of paper and allowed himself extra copies of the card.

Is this the standard procedure?

Many thanks in advance.

For casual games it is fine but you could not do this in a tournament unless the organiser was notified and said it was OK. So as long as both players know there really isn't a problem.

It's fine for personal games, but proxies are not allowed in official tournaments, which also tends to expand to pretty much all tournaments.

For casual games, especially when just beginning, absolutely fine.

When there are tourney prizes to be had, it's a no no.

What they said. For home games, I recommend printing out any extras you want (card images are HERE) until you buy the ships that have those cards. For tournament games, if you don't own a card you want to play, ask around. People are usually very friendly and willing to lend out upgrade cards they aren't using.

OMG best link ever.

Standard procedure is that you go out and buy the product that contains the cards you need or give money to someone who already has to get their "extra" cards.

The next option is that you simply play with something else.

The last option is you just say "fine, whatever" and go from there. It seems a lot of people have no issue with using proxies for upgrades but will probably be up in arms when you start looking at pilots (although some see those as upgrades) or specific ships and other game pieces.

I can see the logic, but is a tad annoyed over A-wings future. Will we need to get a Rebel Aces pack per A-wing because of Chardaan refit now? No one will fly naked A-wings for 17 when they really cost 15.

Yes, if you want the official Chardaan refit card and not a proxy. You could consider forgoing the refit for proton rockets, but you'd still need Rebel Aces or a proxy.

Standard procedure ? I don't think this is a etiquette thing except if you are playing tournaments. If i ever proxied something, i would ask my opponent first if he is fine with it, and that i have alternatives so he shouldn't feel forced. If i am playing with my group of friends, we just share or proxy the cards, since we like to test and try out stuff before buying.

I´m sorry, I didn´t realize you get 3 Refits in the box. Google Fu fail.

Casual game? Sure, proxy the cards. As long as it's clear which ships you're using and which ship has which upgrades most people aren't going to care, and you probably don't want to play against the few {censored}s who would get upset about it. Just make sure that you have printed versions of every card you're using with the complete rule text included in case there are any questions about how something works.

Local tournament? Ask the people running it. There's no real reason not to allow proxies, unless it's a store hosting the tournament and they want to force you to buy more stuff from them. But be sure to ask in advance, it would really suck to get there and find out that you're not allowed to play.

FFG sanctioned tournament? You need the real cards. FFG wants you to spend money on their products, and if you don't spend that money you don't get to play in their tournaments.

My standard procedure is just to print up proxies, since I only play casual games with friends. No way I am going to buy ships I don't need or want to get some cards.

Casual ok but still you would wind up spending more at the local club/pup/fast food joint. Just buy what you need and be done with it. If you don't have it don't use it..just my 2 cents.... I am sure most of the folks on here have cell phones with EXPENSIVE data plans. assorted Pcs/ Xbox games etc... its just like any other game buy what you need/want.... yeah perhaps if your a 16 year old kid, or a full time college student. but a person with a real job should have no trouble forking over the 15-20 bucks to get the expansion pack they need. And if that IS a problem then you have MUCH MUCH MUCH bigger problems than funding your X-wing addiction!!!! just saying... sometimes using proxys is just being CHEAP and not in the good way.. being Cheap in the good way is drinking home brewed coffee instead of stopping at the local Starbucks for that 4 dollar cappuccino!!! just my 2.5 cents.... i mean its just like the Direct Tv packages i wish i could buy JUST the channels i actually watch.. but NO they spread them out over a few packages so i HAVE to buy a 3rd tier packages to just get the few shows i actually like!!! however that said i DON'T need to watch ANY TV its a choice i make... folks don't NEED to run proxy cards unless they want to test out certain combos to see if they want to purchase them. really Its all casual to me it just seems cheap to me when i hear or see folks proxy stuff then whip out the latest I phone 5 etc..... ok done ranting..lol

along those same line i always wondered if folks would even notice if i printed out my own proxy cards that were totally made up with odd abilities...lol yeah i know the pros would notice lol.. just would be fun to try it...

I suggest you not judge other's gaming budgets without knowing them. You come off really ignorant.

Would it be fun to be black listed from future events though?

Gaming budget??? vs house hold budget vs putting daughter through college budget.. vs car payment etc etc.. Its a GAME and its not that expensive.... like i said if you have a REAL job and are not a teen or full time college student getting the REAL cards shouldn't be that much of a problem. really back in the day i would routinely ride my bike out to construction sites and various roads to collect returnable bottles so i could buy star-fleet battles miniatures.... like i said for casual play no problem.. Some folks just have different priorities. like the guy down the road from me who drives a beat up S-10 that belches black smoke and barely runs. yet he hauls a top of the line immaculate ranger bass boat to tournaments cause he LOVES fishing...simple econ 101.... cost vs benefit... some folks don't see any benefit in obtaining the real cards..

the cards i would be talking about making would be so over the top that one would have to laugh at them.. like "Bad motivator" droid... Jar Jar crew card.. stuff like that...

Oh i didn't think they'd be for cheating but you never know if you'll get that one TO with no funny bone...

You are ridiculing someone because they aren't going out and buying multiple of everything right away. The game can be relatively cheap, but it can also be very expensive. I don't advocate someone to buy multiple of a ship for one card if they don't want the ship in multiple.

I was actually going to reprint my pilot cards with my own names on them,

My star wars RPG has a 'curry menu' naming convention so... you'd get things like:

Ace smuggle Rogan Josh

Admiral Keema Naan of the Imperial Navy

Sag Aloo, nefarious bounty hunter

etc etc

the other one is to use medicine names like 'Dak Tarin', 'Can Esstan' and the like.

Not ridiculing anybody... Its still fun to just play what you have. you don't have to lust after every upgrade that comes down the pipe.( easier said than done). or in FFGs case BOAT.... and as i said for casual play what ever floats your boat, if you want to use golf balls as proxy decimators go for it.... but to me once you start proxying stuff ( including cards particularly if you can actually afford them) it kind of starts a slippery slope as when does it become a problem? like i said casual play no problem. I know in my neck of the woods players are scarce and i truly wouldn't care if they used rocks for "A" wings and the queen of hearts for recon specialist.. That said if they did only have the core set than i would simply lend them some of my stuff or play only core stuff against them... Its NOT a big deal..
