A Game to Play With the Mrs?

By Will44, in Star Wars: The Card Game

Hey all

I'm a lucky man and my wife shares my love of Star Wars. We're always looking for two player card games to play together. Obvious we're not looking to play competative tournaments nor to go to the local gaming store. But is this a game we can play occassionally and enjoy? Does the core box have a lot of replay value?

I personally think a single core set works perfectly well for that kind of thing. You'll have limited ability to build custom decks and the starter decks aren't the most consistent which can make games more draw dependent than skill dependent, but inconsistency may actually help the replay value. Pick up a core set, enjoy some games, and enjoy getting hooked and buying more cards :D

Definitely a game you can play casually with family. I haven't played competitive yet but I've gotten some friends and family members into it just playing for fun. 1 Core Set will be good for getting into it.

Thanks for the reply. The real reason I'm on the fence is because I watched the 20 minute explaination video, and the game seems very complicated. Is this true? Is it tough to learn?

The rules aren't really too complicated when compared to other LCG/TCG/CCG style games, especially if you're sticking with the core set. There's a ton of tactical depth in the game... but you don't need to understand that when you start and I personally find part of the fun being learning the tactics as you play.

I found reading the rules a few times and watching the team covenant tutorial helped a lot. Keep the rulebook handy for questions that come up and feel free to ask questions in the rules section here.

It's too complicated for my wife, but then, she's not a Star Wars fan. You might want to hold out for Empire vs. Rebellion. That should hit stores in a couple weeks* (it just got on the boat this week) and it's only $13 instead of $40. Don't get me wrong, I love Star Wars: The Card Game, and if you're really interested, there's nothing like getting a core set and trying it out, but based on what you've said so far, I think this may not be the card game you're looking for.

*It could take 5-7 weeks before it actually hits stores.

I agree with Budgernaut, the Empire vs Rebellion is cheaper and complete out of the box, and should be a fun simple game for you and your wife to enjoy. While the LCG core set is definitely playable out of the box and also would be a lot of fun it is customizable with plenty of expansions, and if your like me, once you get a taste of this LCG, you'll want more, and soon become obssessed with it. :)

I've reread your post and a key word I picked up on the second time was the word "occasionally." Given that you probably won't be playing this every single day, I think the core set will actually have a lot of replay value for you. My suggestion would be to have your wife watch the Team Covenant or FFG tutorial videos (or both) and then ask her if she's interested in it. If she's not interested in it, I wouldn't force it, but if it does look like something she would at least like to try, I say go for it.

I have a similar situation...we picked up the core set, the wife wanted to play the dark side navy and I pulled the light side Jedi starter from the core. We have played three times and the Light Side has won all three...she really wants to beat me but does not really like building decks.

That brings me to my question; I want to build two roughly equal decks. However, since I will be building them both, I will know how they are DESIGNED to run and will play them accordingly. She, conversely, will just pick it up, see what is in her hand and roll from there.

With that drawback, what would you recommend for 2 decks? I am willing to pick up either second core or an expansion, what I need is something where my pure experience factor does not steam roll her so it is fun for both and she gets an occasional win.

I have plenty og ccg experience and am currently playing a game I shan't name here since it is by another company with a group of 5 good friends and am planning to make Conquest my tournament game...so this one is well into the "occasional, extremely casual play" where we probably are more interested in seeing Luke and Vader hit the table than winning...

hope that is enough information and thanks in advance for the assistance

If you are looking for consistency in decks, pick up a second Core. You can never go wrong with that.

If you are looking to flesh out the Smugglers & Spies and the Scum & Villainy Affiliations, pick up a copy of Edge of Darkness.

No matter what you choose to buy, remember that the game doesn't stop with the Core Set and is made to have expansions to further add to the variety and combinations in your decks. From what I understand though, you are keeping this pretty casual.

As far as how the games go, you're always going to have an advantage over her, knowing how many copies of, say, Twist of Fate are in her deck. However, with time and patience, she will learn to use those decks well, especially if you explain the main goal of the deck to her.

I do have a couple questions regarding your games.

1. Do you find that you are often winning the Edge Battles and she is not?

2. Is the problem local to her playing the Dark Side or does she lose no matter what side she is playing?

3. Overall, how does she play? Aggressive, always attacking, Passive, almost always defending or Balanced, with a good mix of both?

4. Have you thought about making a mixed Affiliation deck with Sith/Imperial? It might be a bit more confusing to her at first, having to resource match but it could help her win games with Darth Vader/Palpatine.

Thanks for the reply. I generally win the edge battle, through she did once play the fate card when I was planning to in order to restart it...

So far she has only wanted to play the Dark Side.

She plays different almost every game. Once she attacked every turn, another game never attacked...she has yet to commit anyone to the force, which has been advantageous for me of course, and once she did blow up two of my objectives and would have won next turn but I was able to destroy two objectives myself...

I will pick up a second core I think and build a sith/imperial mix that will probably just double up on 4/6 objectives (I think that is the typical split?) to maximize her chances of drawing the Vader/Palpatine thing. Appreciate the feedback

Commitment to the force helps the dark side a lot, definitely encourage her to commit and take the force.

There's certainly a balance bbetween offense and defense that you learn from playing this game. I used to be overly aggressive when I first started the game. I also tried only defending. A mix is best.

Anywhere from 6/4 to 8/2 is a decent split, just remember to have an affiliation card matching the lesser affiliation in your deck. I like running mostly Sith with the death ad despayre set mixed in.
