[Off-Topic] Star Wars: A New Dawn, is anyone else reading this?

By EvilEd209, in X-Wing

Meh we all know Mandalorian Iron beats Cortosis, but it will do....... I also looked at the wookiee, Corellia was mentioned so that exists now in fake canon.

Man, stop callin' it fake canon. EU was technically fake canon all along anyway. The only true canon was the films. Now everything being released has been stated to be 100% canon. Might as well roll with it, aye?

I intend to get this book. Glad people are liking it.

I'm not hating on the book, but I simply have no respect for Disney and its crap on the EU.

I am about 33% of the way through it at the moment, Its okay.

I think the problem I am having is mostly relative to what I have been reading lately. jumping straight from Ringworld Engineers to A New Dawn is a really big change.

I'm reading it now, and it's pretty mediocre. Not bad, but not very good. If it were not Star Wars, I think I'd skip it. I'm trying to articulate why it's not grabbing me, but I can't quite.

I think it's the way the book seems more like a collection of tropes, rather than a solid story. The villain is a kitten eater, evil with no nuance. The heroes are well written enough that I think I could come to care about them, but not so interesting in this story that I'm compelled to pick up the book every morning.

And there's at least one other character who seems to be there for no other reason than complicating the plot while being annoying.

So that's my opinion. Others think differently. :)

Is it too much for a 9 yr old?

Is it too much for a 9 yr old?

I was watching Robocop, aliens and predator at that age don't coddle the boy.

I think they meant word wise, is it too much. That said, if I hand a kid a book and the kid asks me what some of the words mean, that's nothing but a good thing, and a learning experience.

Remind me to hand any future child of mine the thrawn trilogy or something by age 7 or so.

Oh he is a smart kid above his reading level. Also thought of audio book for the sound effects.

I have to say give Disney a chance. They did Pirates of the Caribbean and I liked those movies. They can't be worse than episode I-III.

Hey, all Disney needs to do to win us over is to have an appearance by Jar-Jar in the background ... in which he is subsequently vaporized within 5 seconds of appearing. :D Have it be one of those "blink-and-you'll-miss-it" moments so there's enough deniability so as not to harm the feelings of the kiddies, but a wink-and-a-nod to those folks who'll go back and replay that segment over and over just to be sure. ;)

My mother took me to see Terminator.

Your mum is awesome!

I don't coddle him and usually let him see stuff above his age bracket, but I like to do my due diligence as his Dad not to freak him out with something unexpected. He's a good kid and I don't want to do him wrong. I wouldn't let him see The Ring, for example. That one freaked me out!

As for Disney, what do people expect to happen? You think Disney wants to kill the cash cow? You think they want to have another Episodes I-III? They will look at The Hobbit / LotR movies to see how much money you can make. They won't mess with them. Personally, I'm excited with what Disney has planned. How many movies in the next 5 years? That's a good thing. A new animated TV show set in a better time frame. They are scrapping the boring Knights of the Republic pc game series and have already made a freemium web Tie Fighter vs X-wing game. Oh, and this book is canon. Just think about that. All the books to come out will most likely be "official". No more BS about the book universe and the movies.

Boring knight of the old republic game...I hope you have your flame proof underwear you'll need it.

And Disney cancelled the free x-wing game.

Meh, let them flame me. It was alright....if you liked that sort of game. What else did they do, though? Not much. They tried to rip off Battlefield games and made an unbalanced one. They made a RTS that.....well, I don't know. I don't like RTS! You can do so much more with the franchise and they just didn't. I think Disney has the deep pockets to pretty much put out a lot of stuff.

As for the free game, that's OK, too, as I saw it as a threat that they wouldn't produce a better version. :)

I admit, I'm an optimist. I just hate to see people bash Disney stuff based on some preconception of what they expect. I say wait till you see something before you bash it. The success of all the Super Hero moveis and Fantasy movies shows that you can make a lot of cash if you make some seriously good movies. They did a good job with Pirates of the Carribean, as I already said. I say that's good enough evidence for me to be optimistic until I see the next movie.

The first two pirates were enjoyable three and four were trainwrecks.

And the marvel films owe the budget to Disney but not too much else, it's the marvel method not the Disney method people praise for the success.

True on the Marvel movies, but you don't think they are paying attention? What is it you think Disney is going to do? Turn it into the Ewok Adventures, featuring Jar-Jar Binks? I mean, seriously, you think they want to kill the franchise?

And this is the exact same way it works with LucasFilm. Kathleen Kennedy is in charge. The LFL Story Group (made up of LFL veterans) is designing things.

LFL has just as much autonomy as Marvel and Pixar.

This 1000 times over. I am sick of seeing this "Disney is going to ruin Star Wars" argument. Disney has been hands off with marvel and Pixar and will remain that way with Lucasfilm. If anything Lucasfilm being owned by Disney is going to allow them to create something that is not in the shadow of George Lucas. Now back to the OP I plan on getting the book and will probably enjoy the story.

Like they killed pixars run of critically acclaimed films by forcing them into making sequels to cars and monsters Inc because they sell toys, it's what Disney does they run franchises into the ground by making crappy sequel after crappy sequel.

I'm listening my way through the last Dresden Files book (wonderful series, btw) and A New Dawn is on deck.

And without intending to feed the trolls....why do we think that Disney will kill X series/product/idea. Not sure if you noticed or not, but they are a wildly successful company that is really good at most things they get into. Hell, I worked for Disney for a summer on the college program and some of their lectures illustrated the crazy lengths Disney goes to so that details are correct, products are solid, etc.

Thats not 100% true. The Marvel movies have been great BUT what Disney has had Marvel do to the comics is a diffrent story. They recently had Marvel kill off Thor and replace him with a woman. The did this to have a powerful female character young giris can look up to. THE BIG problem I have with this is they dont realise Marvel already has a very VERY VERRRY Powerful womanly character young girls can look up too and thats MS. MARVEL aka Captain Marvel.

IM very picky about what I read from Marvel I only like The Punisher, Ghost Rider (Dan Ketch followed by Blaze) Eddie Brock Venom / Anti-Venom, blade, the Avengers, Dr. Strange.

After Marvel took over the only things not screwed up are the Avengers, Blade, and Ghost Rider.

What they did to the Punisher is beyond defilement. They turned him into Frank N Castle, then he became a Thunder Bolt after being threatend with death. The real Frank would have chosen victory or death not forced subserviantude.

Oh and Eddie Brock will never be Venom agian nor Anti-Venom that being a super awesome change of character which was undone in one page by the lame ass Mr. Fantastic / Disney.

All that being said IM not 100% sure anymore Disney will screw up SW. Just take in mind though when you use Marvel as an example that Disney knows what there doing is a half truth. Live action stuff is great, for now Disney wantas a Punisher show to come out and he will be a active duty Cop = [ =[ =[ had to do that three times because how bad a idea that is. Comics on the other hand are not a good example of Disney running Marvel well.

Picked it up last Tuesday. Could not read it till now because I wanted to read and enjoy it. John Jackson Miller is an Awesome Author. I am on chapter 18 and I love this book. If this is how the new Expanded universe is going to be I am not worried. this coming from a big EU fan. If you like this book pick up his book Kenobi. That book was really great. As for the question does it invalidate Force Unleashed? I think so but not sure. I was at a con and they stated that their was no plans for Force Unleashed to be aded. But as David Faloini stated they could still bring characters locations and things from the expanded universe into the new Canon. So you never know if Starkiller will make an appearance or not later on. We got Bane in Season 6 of the clone wars as well as Quinlin Vos. Got to meet Sam Witwer who played the voice of Star Killer great guy. I challenged him to a game of X-wing during our con since he is an avid X-wing player. Stated that he would like to bea me but never got it set up.

:( Oh well would have been great. So if he is on this forum, if he is ever in Utah my invitation stands he always has a place at my X-wing table.

:D

Why do you think the decision to change Thor and Captain America is Disney's Idea, and not Marvel's idea? Maybe someone at Marvel read the Norse myth about Thor turning himself into a dozen women and said "that's a fun idea, but we should maybe tone it down a bit"?

Maybe someone at Marvel really, _really_ wants Maia Brewton to play Thor in a new movie. And that reference is so obscure it might as well _be_ a Norse myth. But super fun for anyone who tracks it down. :)

As bad-ass as Ms. Marvel is, there is room in the Marvel Universe for more than one awesome character. But probably not much room for brand-new characters.

Well if you remember others have been both Captain America and Thor before. Bucky Barnes was Captain America after Steve Rogers was shot. Also Beta Ray Bill ( Hope that was right sorry ) and I heard also Jane Foster was Thor for a time. They like to mix things up once in a while. I think it gives a good twist to it. But back to Starwars it will be ok. They have Leeland Chee , Dave Falloni , Pablo Hidalgo who are really big Starwars Fans and have more knowlege of Starwars than most people have ever thought of. Also all of them are big fans of the EU. So I see a bunch of EU being put into the new cannon. Also the old Eu is not gone it has just been set as Legends. Which is ok because our stories will always be there. Am I sad to see the old Eu go? Yeah, but I am also excited to see what new things that they can come up with for Starwars. Just look who they have to help write Starwars Episode 7 Lawrence Kasdan. He was the the one who made Empire Strikes back the best Starwars movie. So I am not worried. I just hope there are no Lense Flares :D

I really didnt say anthing about Captain America unless your count the Punisher. As for the Thor thing, the artical said it was disney dictating orders to disney to have the changes made that happend...

Ou of all of this as far as characters I like, the Punisher and Eddie Brock have been the most defiled... =[
