Who has won the quest?

By Visha, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi together =)

before I'll explain the situation, I'm german and my game is also in german. So, if I translate any name different to the english version, sorry for this ;)

Yesterday, we have played a well round of descent 2.0 (only core set). The quest was "the winged death". First scene was fine ... but at the end of the second scene we had the following situation ...

Every guard of the right house was slaughtered by the overlord. So he has to kill the last two guards. They both was standing in the neighborhood of the overlords last creature (the boss) and one of them has lost already 3 life (from 6). The boss was also surounded by the heroes.

It was the overlords turn and it was the last possible turn to win it for him. The overlord attacks one of the guards and he was killed. One last to go, but no more attacks ... Now the overlords plays a bloodthurst (2 additional attacks and then the monster dies) card on the boss.

With the two additional attacks he killed the last guard ... but he also died.

The winning conditions are:

Heroes: Kill the boss

Overlord: Kill all guards

Both conditions are triggered ... So who has won this quest?

The Overlord cause he kills all guards at first?

or the Heroes cause the boss was killed after the attack?

Greetings

Visha

In reality, the boss dealed one damage too less to kill the last guard. So he effectly lost the quest. But we discussed this situation about 10 mins and we had no result for this case ^^ So it is interesting for me to know it better next time ;)

My general sense of rules-lawyering is that the overlord would have won.

The effect of the creature dying does not occur until after the attacks are resolved. Unless the victory conditions state some timeframe (like "at the end of any turn where all the guards are dead") or something to that effect, the first horse around the post wins. That is how dual-race victory conditions are generally played unless there are specific rules stating otherwise.

The overlord won: his win condition was achieved before the boss died, and thus the encounter ended before the boss died.

I concur with Whitewing and Airius. Whoever meets his conditions first, takes it all. If the conditions are not specifically met, then the game is still on.

As do I. Even if the two things triggered at the "same time," since it was the OL turn, he would choose in what order they occurred. If it were a hero turn and a hero had used "Blast" on Belthir and a guard, the hero would then win the encounter, since he would decide who resolves deal damage from the attack first.

This is another good distinction to remember in future cases where things might occur simultaneously. Excellent point.

That's an epic way to win too. Like action movie style...

Heroes: "NO! PUT THAT DETONATOR DOWN! YOU'RE MAD"

Belethir: "I'll see you in hell."

::click::

::BOOOOOOOOOM::

Heroes: "NOOOOOOO!"

I was going to end a Shadow Rune campaign that way. There was no way I was going to win (all 4 heroes were still standing, and Zach had like 5 health.) I dropped Blood Rage on the table- I was going to try to take 1 or 2 of the heroes down with me- but they wouldn't have it. They wanted the satisfaction of blasting Zachareth to bits- so I withdrew the card and got slaughtered on the next turn.

Thank you all !

Question is answered very well.
