Ion Missile Question

By Rottenreason, in X-Wing Rules Questions

My wife and I played a game last night 60 pts she took a tie defender with an ion missile. She shot the missile at me on her round but I was able to evade it. However, if she hit I had a few questions about how to resolve.

The ion missile does 1 damage no matter how many dice show hits?

The ship she targeted was a small ship so it would recieve 2 ion tokens. Does this mean I move forward 1 for 2 rounds and that ship is disabled from all actions for 2 rounds?

I'm pretty sure sheilds do not stop the Ion effect if your hit. You lose a shield or hull if no sheilds are on the target.

1) Ion missile hits if there are more [Hit] + [Crit] results on the attack dice than [Evade] results on the defence dice.

Assuming a hit:

2) Ion missile does 1 damage to the target if it hits. (See 1)

3) Target receives 2 ion tokens regardless of base size if the attack hits. (Having shields or not does not affect this)

4) Next activation phase target performs a 1 forward manoeuvre. Then ALL ion tokens are removed.

5) If the target has no stress tokens after their 1 forward manoeuvre they may perform an action as normal.

So, if I attack with ion pulse missiles and I roll three hit and the defender three blank the result is always a single damage and 2 ion tokens, right?

Correct.

The common mistake with Ion missiles and Ion cannons for that matter, is the assumption that you lose your actions. Which is not the case at all. It's designed to screw up your movement, and any ability that relies on revealing your maneuver dial, such as decloaking or Advanced Sensors. The main reason Ion missiles apply two Ion tokens, is so you can Ionise a large ship with one shot.

Awesome I wasn't sure if the target (if hit) would have to resolve the ion tokens 1 per round.

Right which in our case she should have opted for the ion cannon upgrade over the missle since. 1 ion token would have distrubed the movement. It's good to know that the affected target can still preform it's free actions if it's not under stress and it can attack.

Dig out the Ion reference card and have another read of that. It might make things seem a bit clearer now. :)
