E-Wing Experiences

By uscsmurf, in X-Wing

In case anyone is wondering if E-Wings are worthwhile, I thought I'd share my experience.

My friend and I got two games in today and we switched sides so each of us got to play both sides. During the first game I played Imperials and had a hell of a time trying to take Corran down in his E-wing. I finally got him just before cracking Luke with Mauler, but man was he a beast. My friend used Corran's ability to perform two attacks in a turn rather well much to the dismay to my fleet. I ended up winning that match due to lucky dice rolls with Mauler to destroy Luke and Corran both, which I found rather hilarious, but in that game Corran was responisble for taking out my bomber and an interceptor.

The second game I was Rebels and Corran shined again. I put R2D2 with Corran and ended up lasting the whole game with him, though just barely. And again, Corran's ability to do two attacks in one round was beneficial to keeping up with my friend. I was vastly outgunned in the match, but ended up playing to a draw, largely to Corran.

So granted it was only two games, but I am glad that I got an E-Wing because it really shined in these two games. And I personally think the loss of a hull point over gaining an extra shiled and agility is worth it over going with an X-wing.

I do a build etahn abaht predator r2d2 and hull upgrade with 2 blue squadron pilots with hlc and the crits role in and the alpha strike is great. One games playing against a slave 1 and did 6 damage in one turn and crit so it couldnt attack next turn another game i killed 2 tie fighters in first round in range of combat

I love both of the named E-Wing pilots, though the generics are quite lackluster. Etahn fits well in just about any squad, though he is obviously more potent the more dice you are throwing. I have also used Corran to great effect, especially as a flanker. I actually liked them so much that I have two E-wings, even though I don't typically run them together, and I don't like the model all that much. I just like those two pilots so much I pulled the trigger on it anyway.

Corran's ability + FCS is a beast, when you add R2-D2 to keep him alive longer it gets even better.

The generics are very expensive, by about 3 points, so it's hard to find a good use for them that B's or mass Z's can't fill in a more cost efficient manner.

Corran + VI + FCS + R7 with a Han Super Falcon build is my go to tournament setup. The double tap effect can really mop up a ship in a single turn.

Corran

R2D2

FCS

PTL

EU

APT

= Real good. If he can survive the first fly by then you can have unlimited fun! :D

Any named E-wing - AdvS - Ptl - R2 astromech. Vader hides in the corner in shame. Do two actions before moving, after that do any speed 1-2 maneuver to clear stress. Repeat until oponent has no ships

I've only played with corran a few times, but none of the other pilots. He was fun, but the squad sucked since he used up so many points. So haven't really gone back to e-wings since.

I have only flown them once, used the ps1 pilots, with fire control system and the stock r7, the I used up the rest of my points on wedge.

Took down a defender and friends only losing wedge, and only late. Three defense dice and a TL on whatever they shot at made for good jousting and they arc dodge pretty well too.

I usually run Etahn with AdvS and PtL. I don't run R2 astromech because I don't own a Y-Wing but it does seem like the optimal build.

Another one I had success with was AdvS and EU. Boost is really powerful and combining it with a K-Turn gives you a semi S-Loop.

The problem is once you commit to a named E-Wing you're pretty much committing to a 3 ship build, or a mini z95 swarm.

There are 3 builds to an E-wing. One is the burst damage with Corran Horn & FCS & R7-T1 The other is squad leader with Ethan swarm tactics and Headhunters. The other is damage sponge with Shield Upgrade + R2-D2 & Sensor Jammer and if using a unique pilot Draw their Fire to pull critical hits off ships so R2-D2 can regenerate them.

My friend ran Etahn with outmaneuver and R7-T1, Luke with R2D2 and elusiveness, and a Blue squad with ion cannon. It was a really nasty combo that would have wasted my Imp list if Whisper hadn't killed Luke with a lucky shot and then Etahn hit a roid.

I'm more impressed with the E-wing the more I fly against it. Very similar to the Defender that way; a good pilot can get a lot out of it and both are underrated by a lot of players due to their cost. With the z95 and Phantom turning so popular in Wave 4, the E-wing and Defender are definitely the hidden gems.

Corran's ability + FCS is a beast, when you add R2-D2 to keep him alive longer it gets even better.

What would you do to give the generics more utility?

I'll get one eventually to fill out my collection. But E-Wings are too pricey and ugly for my tastes. I admit to being slightly intrigued about the Advanced Sensors + R2 shenanigans, but that's a lot of bread to put down on one ship. Someone said it earlier, just keep em cheap and run them in pairs with other cheap support ships. Or, don't run them at all, they are gosh darn ugly as hell.

As ugly as they may be, I would say they are the most powerful Rebel ship second only to Falcons.

Do you think corran works better in a build with super Han? Also is corran better with PTL or something like predator?

When they first came out, I was actually kind of dissapointed with E-wings. They seem either lackluster without upgrades or too expensive with them. Also, the fact that literally no one in my area was using them made me think of them as really, really bad ships. That was until the Polish National Championship where I barely missed the final cut and decided to have some fun in Escalation side-event.

It was 60/90/120/150 points tournament, and I started off with Rookie and 3 Bandits, just to put Ethan next, followed by Wedge w/Swarm and Cracken with a bunch of upgrades.

I was literally delighted by the power of Ethan. It was due to his special rule that I won games 2 and 3, and loosing him early in game 4 really cost me the match (that, and really uneven dice rolls :P ). The highlight of the tournament was a turn in game two, when three of my Bandits fired at the Firespray, who, by then, was out of his shields. Each dealt a single hit, that was changed to crit thanks to Ethan's ability. All three turned out to be... Direct Hits.

That, of course, was sheer luck, but during those games I also managed to double stress Soontir, strip Howlrunner out of her ability and prevent Wedge from firing at me at Range 1 (mine was shooting first xD).

I totally fell in love with A'Bath since then and I plan to refine my 90 point list to get to 100 points :)

What would you do to give the generics more utility?

I think the cheapest/best way to use generics is to give them FCS and R7. That'd be 62 points (for 2x Knave) leaving 38 for whatever else you wanted to include.

Etahn with AdvS + PtL

Luke with Draw their Fire, R2-D2 and upgrade the Knaves.

3x Z95 Bandits

Might have to try that out sometime, but my gut reaction is 'not quite there'.

Do you think corran works better in a build with super Han? Also is corran better with PTL or something like predator?

I think the best way to setup Corran is at 40 points with VI, FCS and R7. It adds a lot of flexibility for a 40 point fighter that can double tap.

Typically, I run him along Han because the duo provide a high-power double threat in which the opponent has to choose carefully which one to deal with first. Usually, Corran gets two double taps off before getting toasted, but during those turns, Han is chewing up the rest of the force. And, sometimes, Corran becomes the all star and sweeps up games (especially against Imps).

I plan on testing two 40 point Corran lists. One with a 5 Z-95 Swarm and another with 3 Green Squadron PtL + Refitted A-Wings. I'm guessing Corran will carry the weight once more, but the added numbers may be a more efficient game plan against the meta than a Super Falcon.

  • Ethan's ability is big, the rebel howlrunner, every hit being a crit is massive and he is solid with no up grades leaving you plenty of points for support.

Corran Horn + R2-D2 + Fire-Control System + Veteran Instincts + Engine Upgrade (46)

Etahn A’baht + R5-P9 + Push the Limit + Fire-Control System (40)

I like either of these load out to the E-Wings. I will run a naked Etahn but not a Corran. You really need to give Corran some toys to play with.

Corans good but Ethan has never impressed me and I've faced him several times.

Last game I played coran had one good round where he striped my firesprays shields then stressed from ptl he spent three turns getting back into the fight which let me kill his escorts.

He's so expensive though it's tough to build a synergistic list around him.

This is way you need R2 astromech with PtL

I flew a 2 ship e-wing list. Both died on the first turn of engagement as every single time my green dice rolled nothing but blanks. After the third time of this I gave up and started looking wishfully at the YT's.

Am I crazy to consider Etahn or Corran with R2F2, Sensor Jammer, PtL, and Stealth Device.? Aside from how massively expensive it is.
