How many do you fly?

By TomasB, in X-Wing

It is easy to calculate how many of a certain ship could fit into a 100 point build but I'm interested in the top number people find themselves flying.

As an example even though you can fly 8 TIEs or 4 x-wings or 5 Ints or 4 TIE/ad or 2 yt-1300s your answer might be 7 TIEs or 3 x-wings or 2 Ints or 1 TIE/ad or 1 yt-1300.

3, sometimes 4

3, sometimes 4

lol, while I wasn't expecting a full breakdown for every ship I was expecting a bit more detail then that.

Normally 4 unless I'm trying 2 or swarm.

If it's a list of 4 ships I tend to use two of two types of ship. One of my old tournament builds was 2 Ys and 2 Bs. If I go with 3 ships it's usually two of one and one of the other. My current tournament build uses 2 Bs and a HWK and another old tournament build was a shuttle escorting two bombers. I rarely, if ever, go all of one type of ship.

I should clarify: I never meant for a solo list. I noticed that certain ships rarely go above a certain number in any of my lists.

My own answer would be 1 for any large ship, 1 hwk, 1 advanced, 2 Ints, 5 TIEs, 3 x-wings. I don't think i've noticed any other patterns in my own lists yet.

This question came to mind because I keep seeing advice to new players like "buy 4 of all small ships" or "buy 100 points of each ship" and I was wondering if anybody else had noticed any patterns to their ship numbers.

I buy what I can afford at the time the ships come out. If I feel I need more, I'll buy them if I feel like I'd need them for a 100-point tournament list, or more for an Epic list. Many people's sig lines will show what they own.

That it is a very difficult question to answer because it is so situationnal and the only real way to answer it would be to do a break down of every ship with every possible situation.

Exemple: More often than not, when fielding Tie Fighters, I will go for the mini-swarm (4 Tie), but sometimes, when I have under 30 points left and my list is short on number, I will go for 2 instead. If I feel like fielding a proper swarm, I will go for either the 6 named Tie or a 7 ship. I'm not sure I ever tried the 8 Tie swarm. One thing I noticed though, is I will never just field 1 Tie, I will at least go for 2. So I guess I could answer between 2-7 for the Tie Fighter.

I will usually use (and buy) just one of the ships that I don't see as part of a regular squadron (Falcon, Firespray, Shuttle, HWK-290, YT-2400, Decimator). For the others, it really depends, is it a ship that need some upgrade or not ( I don't think I would ever field a 5 Interceptor squadron, but use 4 regularily), what role does it serve, attack or support ( 2 Y-Wing seems like enough since I consider it more as a support craft), etc...

Phantoms and Defenders don't show up in multiples when I play, neither do most large ships. E-Wings usually show up alone but I'm interested in a list that would use both named pilots to crit something out of existence.

In all seriousness, however.

I don't like mini swarms, but I do like named pilots, so if I am flying basic TIEs it is probably a 6 ship swarm.

For fast and maneuverable ships, like interceptors, a-wings and phantoms, only 1-2 since they work best as flankers, not the anvil.

Large ships, only 1. Don't like the play styles that use more than 1 and they are typically too expensive.

Tanky fighters like b-wings, bombers and advanceds (if they were worth playing at all) would probably go 2-3, but I don't really favor them much.

In general, I like to overload ships with upgrades. A habit I should probably try to break.

Last couple weeks I gave been having an absolute blast playing a decimator backed up with echo. So much fun. Am definitely favoring the rear admiral for the decimator.

Depends on the kind of build or faction I play:

Han build: 2 ships

Rebels: 3-4 ships

Rebel Swarm: 5-8 ships

Imperials: 3 ships

Imperial swarm: 6-8 ships

I dunno, fly casual.

4 Tie Ints

Personally I try for no more than 2 of a given ship (1 for the large bases) except for Interceptors or Defenders (I don't know why but I like those ships alot) or if I am experimenting with a new flavor on Vassal or some such

Usually 6 4TIEs/2INTs or 3TIEs/3Bombers. Last rebel built was EXX.

For me, I have more of the Xs (4) and Tie fighters (5), but only have one A and B and E. I picked up two Ys for the classic look, and because I found Ion Cannons to be worth it. I purposefully bought three Zs for the sake of a mini swarm. I planned on getting another B, but then Rebel Aces was announced, so I am waiting to pick up two of those, to give myself 3 As and Bs. The E seems too expensive to do more than one in a list, but I have a mate who loves to go 2 Es outfitted, and any left over points throws an A or Z in.

Number crunchers made me only pick up a single Tie Advanced. I have one Tie Defender and one Tie Phantom. The more I played with my Tie Bomber, the more I liked it, so I have picked up two more and eyeing a 3 Tie-B and Defender list. I may buy one more Tie-B. I have one Interceptor and one Imperial Aces for 3 Tie-I. Only 1 of each large ship.

Basically, I have only topped out in points on the Xs and maybe the Tie-I (I could go Royal Guards and get 4, but Soontir Fel and named companions inspires enough fear). I tend to do mix squads of multiple types, so ABYZZ, or XXYZZ or IIFF or FFFFFA or "PIDdy da FOOL (Phantom Interceptor Defender) " or "We Are Shuttle Bob-omb and We Are Here To Make You Think About Death and Stuff" (Shuttle +T-Bx2).

5 ties, 2 interceptors. I am unlikely to run more than 3 bombers, 2 Shuttles or no shuttles, 1 firespray, 1 defender, 1 phantom.

Rebel tie, 2 xwings (biggs plus whoever usually)

2 Y wings,

3 Headhunters,

1 or 4 bwings (really its a big swing probably only buy 2 before aces comes out though if they are new.

Awings I run 1 usually.

HWK I run 1 or 2.

Ewings one.

YT1300 1.

Rebel Transport is worth getting one of.

I don't own a Tantive IV because I feel it steps over a line to charge me that much for three cards that will see regular play.

I own a lot more than that, but that is the groupings I fly.

What with their being so many ships I enjoy more than TIE Fighters, it's exceedingly rare for me to field more than 2. I like smaller lists (i got sick of swarms really fast), I tend not to fly homogenous lists (lists comprised of only one ship type), and I tend to stick with more maneuverable ships, or ships that I enjoy more than ones that make mathematical or statistical sense. That being said, my serious squads do tend to work well together on some level or another.

Beyond that, I like to stay close to/weave in and out of asteroids. I also like to draw opponents through the fields, so my asteroids tend to be closely clustered and on my side of the board more than my opponents side, with a few in the middle to weave through (those were usually placed by my opponents).

I favor smaller lists, with pilot abilities or upgrades, I don't mind heaping them on a few ships. I know how to play my range, and it's very rare for an opponent to successfully take out a heavy target of mine early.

EDIT: I misread, i thought it was just "how do you fly". General strategies and whatnot. oh well.

I like three ship Rebel builds. I always have, even back when they weren't cool.

I dunno, fly casual.

Stay classy. Why bother posting?

I usually fly something that uses similar dials so that I can more easily formation fly. Usually fly 3 rebel lists or 4-5 imperial lists.

For Rebels you're generally looking at three ships, sometimes four X-Wings. I don't have enough A-Wings to do a 5 A-Wings list although that might change soon. For Imperials, I still haven't gotten around to flying the four squint list yet somehow. I have flown eight TIE fighters and loved it.

I play mostly Imperials so generally cram at least 2-3 TIEs in any list after getting 1-2 core ships like a Firespray or Defender. I currently have 5 X-wings, 4 Z-95s and 4(soon to be 5 with Aces) A-wings that I just cannot put a list together to swarm with though I have not been trying too hard. Just seems wrong to swarm with Rebels.

I play rebels mostly and usually fly 3 ships as I prefer named pilots (they are more interesting to play) and tend to go for the high PS ones most of the time. On some lists I manage to squeeze in a 4th ship. If I play Imps its usually a 4 ship build, again mainly using named pilots.

Once I get my hands on Rebel aces I'll be doing a few 4 ship builds with 2 A-wings and 2 other ships - looking forward to that :)

Defender : 2 Defenders + Jonus

Firespray : Etiher 1 Krassix, or 2 Regular

Intercetpors : 1

Phantoms : 1

Lambdas : 1

Tie fighters : 5-8

I play rebels too, but the breakdown would be XXXZZZ, XXX (some variations, tho i favor opportunist builds for the fun factor), XXBB, YYBB or XXE.

My go to build is ABYX with varying upgrades and pilots depending on my mood. I often swap out the A-wing to try other ships in the list like an outer rim smuggler or hawk. I have never had any luck flying 3 ship rebel builds, unless you count a 4 ship build with an a-wing one.
