Product timing?

By KILODEN, in X-Wing

Ok, I love this game and the way ffg keeps it balanced.

What I don't like is them showing us upcoming items 6 months before we can get them, unless you go to gen con which is total BS. If you have it for them you should have it for all.

Rebel aces is now in its 8th week on boat, and wave 5 hasn't been updated since 7/3 and is in no way going to make it to us in the 3Q.

So how about this, don't show us shot until it's been on the boat for 4 weeks cause people like me who seem to have OCD issues about having to buy everything are going crazy trying to wait. Y e s I admit I have a problem, and if my wife ever found out he much I spend on games she would kill me.

I know there others out there who feel the same way. Its an addiction, like smoking, we need to have this stuff, it's like crack to us.

So when you see posts like this and get all missed off cause we can't be patient, just look at the dude who hasn't had a smoke in 12 hours and see how agitated he is, that's how we get about these games.

Do not dangle awesomeness in front of us and then tell us we must wait 4 months to get it, that's just mean.

The worst case of this is palladium books robotech tactics game which we were supposed to get by the end of 2013. They just started shipping.

Rage!!!!!!!

You do understand that the announcements are just as much for retailers as they are for us. We would know about the product coming, because the retailers would get the information for pre-orders at roughly the same time we get announcements (with some exceptions and baring delays). FFG does the announcements to also drum up interest from us to help the retailers get a better idea of how much they should pre-order. I think FFG did much better on the initial announcements of the Waves in terms of throwing out information. And it is still better than Wizkids. They know Attack Wing releases to mid next year.

So, you would rather actually have some idea of what a product was, or would you rather have merely a product name?

Also, it isn't as bad as the Netrunner release. I think it started to ship in Nov, when they sold it at Gencon that year.

See, I really like knowing what FFG have planned months ahead. It's good to know what to save cash for and what to get excited about. I much prefer it to GW's "everything must be kept a secret at all costs no-one is to know" approach.

With regards to Rebel Aces - I wonder if it's now being held back until Wave 5 arrives. I know Imperial Aces was released on it's own, but as Wave 5 is just two ships they might have decided to release all three at once to save on shipping (one batch of three will cost less to ship tanabatch of one and a batch of two, after all)

I wouldn't mind if they tightened things up a bit to just a few months advanced warning, but I think too much time is better than too little. It gives people a chance to get excited, unlike the way certain other companies do things.

How about, turn off your computer.

I wonder about this also. I thought it was pretty crazy that people who went to GenCon could get wave 5 when it's still at the printers, and Aces hasn't even been released yet. If their upcoming page is accurate, and history is anything to go by, the GenCon folks will have had their wave 5 for about 2-3 MONTHS before anyone else, which is actually a pretty huge slap in the face.

I have a feeling they might actually be on the same (extremely slow) boat as Aces, but if I'm wrong, I'll actually be a little upset with them. I understand that they'd have Aces at gencon, as it's on the boat and we'll have it pretty soon, but wave 5? I know a lot of people will say that FFG is being really great for letting the dedicated folks who attended the con have wave 5 early, but it really backfires IMO if it's THAT far ahead of everyone else.

I like getting advance notice of new products. What I don't like is have EVERYTHING in a set spoiled months before it is released and then spoil the NEXT product before that one is even in the stores. The excitement for wave 4 was totally ruined because we knew everything about it well in advance, people were play testing everything in the set for weeks and when it finally hit the stores... All anyone could talk about was the recent preview of wave 5.

If you have to put up preview articles x months in advance because of retailers, push the release date so that they won't steal the thunder of your other releases.

I also think making the initial preview more of a teaser would be a good idea. The retailers won't have more than just a product name. If they just teased that and maybe a partial picture or a single new upgrade at that time it would be fine. That would get lots of people talking about the upcoming release and then they could extend the preview cycle some so that they don't end up spoiling everything weeks before release.

Generating excitement and hype for a release is good, having some stuff be unknown until someone actually gets the product in their hand generates excitement and hype.

Why may something be later showing up than anticipated... pick any of them, pick all of them, pick something I forgot about.

Factory production problems - labour shortage, supply issues, accidents, packaging misprints, product packaging shortage...

Transit time problems - government shipping paperwork, storms in the ocean that re-route freighters, piers that are under repair/reno so there's a backlog waiting to unload, customs arrival paperwork, customs arrival staff shortage for freighter inspection, backlog of goods waiting to be shipped by train/truck...

It's not like there's someone at FFG sitting behind a desk intentionally yanking our chains just to make the delay as long as possible. I'm guessing they have a significant amount of capital tied up in each new release and, like any company who'd like to do things like pay their employees and turn a profit, I'm sure they'd be just as happy to get it out to all of us and our eager little hands as quickly as possible.

Beyond anything logistical, I'm quite happy with the long lead times. It allows me a chance to budget for them, to read and to listen to others about the various aspects of each release, and to decide how many of each I want.

As someone who lives a bit far from others, and with a crappy computer that can barely run Vassal at the best of times, I still have only a handful of Wave 4 games in hand right now. To add Wave 5 and Aces on that will be fun, but a huge learning curve for me. I'm happy with any delay still.

My only issue is not having enough stock of the old ships

I know a few who wants a falcon.

I want another Firespray, and it really sucks that we won't see anymore until Q4

Even the owners of our flgs don't understand why it seems so hard to get anything in.

And when they do, it's not much and it's week/months before they can get more.

Which also makes it incredibly hard for new players.

I don't mind knowing what's coming out.

I'd rather they not spoil it, but understand why they do.

I actually prefer they spoil and tell us what is coming out, being quite transparent about it. Call me a warhammer refugee, but i can't be more thankful about being able to plan my purchases ahead, and being able to change my mind in time.

Agree with Krynn tho, even tho i don't suffer from stock, except for the firespray and the falcon... which has been out of stock for 2 months already here.

Wah.

Don't like info coming out months early, don't read it. Want GenCon exclusives or pre-releases, go to GenCon or get someone to pick them up for you. It's not like they're something special that won't ever be available through normal channels. They can't be used in tournament play, and everything has been spoilered at this point if you want to proxy them for home games.

I love knowing what will come out, the details , what they look like, etc. I hate, how they give times it will be out seemingly without knowing when they will ever ship and be in stores. As I am seriously doubting we'll see both aces and wave 5 by the end of Q3, as its over at the end of this month.

I'm happy for all those who picked up their ships at Gen con, but that is hardly the vast majority of players who are yearning, and I'm pretty heavily yearning the Decimator.

Basically my annoyance is just keep the release as a " To be announced " till they actually know when they'll be available, the teasing lie of quarters urks me highly. As is I doubt we'll see wave 5 by the end of the month, and to expect Most wanted and the entirety of wave 6 for the end of the year, I think is about as likely as me becoming an X man and fighting sentinels in the same span of time.

I'd prefer less advance warning and spoilage in general, but I still check FFGs main page daily - so I can only blame myself.
Best to assume they have a clear strategy behind their spoilers - it seems to follow a similar pattern across all their product lines. It's definitely nicer than GWs current approach.

Besides, if it wasn't for their advance warning I wouldn't know that OHMYDOGS ARMADA IS COMING!!1!

I think FFG do a lot better with the LCG games in this regard. Typically, the Force Packs for the Star Wars LCG are announced a while ahead, and then shortly after one of the objective sets is revealed, and perhaps a few more cards in the set are spoiled via images. But usually it's no more than 10 cards out of the 60+ card set that are revealed. You have to wait until the actual release to learn what all the objective sets are like.

The Team Covenant unboxings are my favourite as a side note...

I like the way we get to find out what's coming out. The spoiled pilot cards, upgrades, and shots of the models. That's great. I think it's OK to sell some pre-releases at GenCon, even though there's no possible way I'll get there from New Zealand.

The thing that's not cool, is the long wait after GenCon for the stock to come in. I think there shouldn't be pre-release sales until they've got stock world-wide by the following week or so. That way the lucky few that can attend GenCon and score these pre-releases, won't be gloating for weeks on end while the rest of us have to wait.

Actually, FFG sends out spoilers for the whole pack now to other sites for SWLCC. So, the whole pack is generally spoiled before release.

However, the LCG's also have the issue of having a tough time keeping track of when a certain pack comes out. The whole cycle is revealed before the first pack comes out, and then they start to go beyond the current cycle.

If I didn't know that Dash was on the way I would have gone a different way in my purchases. I like the forewarning.

From the angle of GenCon. I went a few years ago and was pissed that the games I played had nothing special. When you have to schedule going to Indy almost a year in advance you need some perks.

That said it has been close to a month now and we should have what they got soon or even my patience will run thin.

I'm fine with having a product spoiled before release. My problem is when they spoil the "next" wave before the "current" wave hits the shelves. Let me play with a wave for a month or two before you tell me what I have to look forward to.

Several points to look at.

I can see a players pain about having to wait so long, but that has always been a problem with most game companies. As far as GenCon, it is a very expensive event for them to go too when you look at all the costs. They really need a product there that will generate interest and help cover the expense. I did not go to GenCon last year so had to wait like many of us for the new product, but we had the cards and could use them locally, so no big deal. Most companies don't give you that type of gift ahead of time. This year I managed to go for a day, I was interested more in seeing how the championship was done and was hoping for Rebel Aces. I was pleasantly surprised when wave 5 was there.

It is how companies have to due business, generate interest in a product and keep it up.

The 100% spoiling is the main issue. I've lost so much excitement with rebel aces that I canceled a preorder and my cancel a other (I had three). I know what's in it, I've already stopped day dreaming about it and I've moved on to other releases and hobbies.

My only complaint is that both releases say Q3 and we have 3.5 Weeks before Q3 is gone, Rebel Aces might make it in that window, but if the 4-6weeks for on the boat is accurate + 1 week for shipping Wave 5 will be middle of October if it is on the boat tomorrow, IE Q4.

I don't mind delays I just would like things to be updated when appropriate, such as changing the release dates to say Q4 so at least we aren't all planning on it to drop in the next few weeks, or if the original schedule is still on track then updating the upcoming releases page (should be standard operating procedures but it could have slipped through the cracks)

Yeah, spoiling stuff six months before it releases is really frustrating. Like others, I'm not even excited about Rebel Aces anymore. It's been part of the game for half a year now, essentially. I guess I'll buy one out of obligation.

As for the "this is for retailers" argument, there really doesn't need to be more than a name, a description and a shot of the box, initially. Spoilers shouldn't start until a month (MAYBE two months) before the product is in stores.
