Just ordered a phantom, what now?

By slim chaney, in X-Wing

Finally caved and ordered a phantom, even with my EU reservations.

Just wondering how it could fit into what I currently own and how should I run it.

Quick run through of my imperials:

5 tie fighters

3 interceptors

2 royal guard interceptors

2 Firesprays (Boba and Kath only due to paint schemes - I know;) )

Is it best included as a flanker, replacing Soontir, or supporting.

I'm also wondering about a Firesprays(named not BH) interceptor of some description and the phantom. Got a mini tournament in a few weeks and that will probably be my first try of any list.

Help me Obi Wan Kenobi.......you're my only hope :D

Phantom+mini swarm works well.

First you need to decide whisper or echo, if there is a falcon heavy meta in your area you go whisper with VI or she dies when decloaked, if its mostly fighters try echo she's loads of fun and moves like no other pilot you've ever flown.

You want to use FCS for sensor slot usually, and then choose your passenger be it gunner for a re-roll, co-pilot to turn hits into crits or maybe recon specialist so you always have focus for defence.

1 phantom and 5 ties is very formidable.

Jacob

Cheers guys.

The main opponent, the "alpha gamer" if you will, mentioned running a z-95 swarm, 6 ships I believe, so the mini swarm sounds about right to counter that. There won't be any falcons so Echo it is :D

I'm assuming the phantom will be off on its own giving opponents a "which way do I go" conundrum? That's very much how I play Soontir, bit of a "lone wolf" ;-)

The Fat Falcons that run C-3PO and Millennium Falcon title are the common answer for stopping Phantoms. Since you know they will most likely be taking that evade action for the survivability of their YT-1300, Sensor Jammer is a great choice for the phantom. This will add survivability to your Phantom as you can take some of the bite out of the Falcons attack. So I would begins your Phantom build with this "Whisper" + Sensor Jammer + Veteran Instincts + Advanced Cloaking Device (41)

IronTau runs a Phantom + Mini Swarm to good effect:

Whisper w/VI, ACD, Sensor Jammer & Rebel Captive (44)

Howlrunner w/VI (19)

Academy Pilot x 3 (36)

I like that list, I just know I don't have all the cards, rebel captive, sensor jammer and ACD(?)

I'll try and build.something similar around what I have :D

I've been trying to build lists around Kath and it has been a challenge. Before upgrades, how about:

FIRESPRAY-31: · KATH SCARLET

TIE PHANTOM: · "WHISPER"

TIE FIGHTER: · MAULER MITHEL

I like that list, I just know I don't have all the cards, rebel captive, sensor jammer and ACD(?)

I'll try and build.something similar around what I have :D

The Captive and Jammer both come with the Lambda Shuttle.

Buy three more and play 4 naked Sigma Squadron Pilots.

I'm in work so don't have access to much but I originally thought about bounty hunter, soontir plus phantom. Not sure if points would allow but I could maybe look at Kath, interceptor plus either named phantom.

When I "fly casual" I go 2 Firesprays so this would be a nice change. For the mini tournament though I really think I'll give the mini swarm option a runout.

@PhantomFO

Thanks for the info :D

Unfortunately for me I won't buy ships to get cards just to build lists, I buy what I like the look of. I don't own the shuttle, tie advance, tie bomber or any EU stuff.........well, at the mo' ;-)

Thank god Imperial Aces came with PTL, sorry it took so long Soontir :D

I played a sigma panto with rebel captive sensor jammer, and stygium accelerator. Plus carnor jax and a 3 academy mini swarm vs hlc b-wings and etahn last night. Phantom was a beast even at low PS. Grab a copy of the shuttle so you can try different load outs on your phantom to figure out what you enjoy.

A shuttle can be a great addition to a phantom list. Yorr will protect your phantom from being stressed out of cloaking. Plus it is a great damage soak and blocker for the points. Just look at how well it worked for the winner of nationals. Space cow is a solid investment even beyond the cards.

If you've played your Intys with high PS builds and arc-dodging, then try out Whisper and Echo, both with VI, ACD, and FCS. Put a Gunner in one and a Weapons Engineer on the other. I like WE on Echo. Then fill in the remaining points with whatever expendable ship you want.

Unless flying against a Falcon, this list is so much fun I feel like it's unfair on my opponent.

Echo will need some getting used to flying due to his ability, but once you work it out, well, it's very nasty.

Good luck!

Now that you have ordered a phantom, there are a few steps you should take to ensure victory.

1-Break into the homes of anyone you play regularly against.

2-Steal their falcon and outrider models, bury said models in the woods somewhere.

3-????

4-profit

Weapons engineer eh? Just had a quick look and it appears that comes with the shuttle as well.

Its really looking like I need to pick one up :D

**** your sales.model FFG......**** you!!!!! :D

Since you don't have a Lambda and the Rebel Captive card, you should try this configuration. You have all the necessary parts:

(You should really get a Lambda next! Maybe a Defender after that!)

This version of Whisper is the National Champion's version. Its basically good versus anything. you should always take an evade action, as you'll always get a free attack if you miss, a free TL for that next attack, and a focus and a recloak when you do actually land a hit. Also 4 or 5 dice is pretty accurate.

"Whisper" (32)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Fire-Control System (2)
Gunner (5)
Advanced Cloaking Device (4)
"Howlrunner" (18)
Swarm Tactics (2)
Academy Pilot (12)
Academy Pilot (12)
Academy Pilot (12)
Total: 100
For a funzies build, you can definitely try this:
Again, you have all the parts.

"Whisper" (32)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Fire-Control System (2)
Gunner (5)
Advanced Cloaking Device (4)
Bounty Hunter (33)
Seismic Charges (2)
Alpha Squadron Pilot (18)
Hull Upgrade (3)
Total: 100

Here's another version:

"Whisper" (32)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Fire-Control System (2)
Gunner (5)
Advanced Cloaking Device (4)
Soontir Fel (27)
Push the Limit (3)
Academy Pilot (12)
Academy Pilot (12)
Total: 98
The 26 points left over from Soontir and Whisper can really be spent however you like.

@Blail Blerg

This is definitely what I was hoping for by posting on here. That first list looks superb :D

I'm off work tomorrow so I can have a proper look at the second list, see how to get boba or kath into it.

The 3rd list, Whisper AND Soontir.........ooohhhhh, chills :D I see it like handling dynamite, it could either go very well or............kaboom! Definitely how I like to play ;-)

Thanks :D

Remove swarm tactics from Howlrunner, and you would have a decent Phantom + Miniswarm build.

I prefer myself either the 5 Academy pilots + Whisper FCS/VI/ADC, but to each their own.

Soontir and Fel get better paired with something big, like a doomshuttle or Yorr. 2 Ties can be easily ignored and screw your flanking options, specially with soontir.

I mean... we could just all give him the nationals list...

He doesn't have a shuttle though, which is a real pity and should be his next priority =P

The list is really tricky to use. And has a lot of inner complexities. If you want to learn about it, search for "I understand the Buzzsaw Phantom now" and other posts. Its all out there.
I could concur with removing swarm tactics. Having a few free pts for initiative is a good thing.
Good luck, slim chansey. Pick one of those and play with it.

My go to Phantom/Interceptor list is:

Whisper, Vet Instincts, ACD

Soontir, PtL, Stealth Device

Turr, Vet Instincts, Stealth Device

It only has ten total HPs but it's all PS9; 99pts for initiative. If you can arc dodge well, it's a monster. It's eaten most lists, the only thing I've lost to using this was a falcon list.

And there In lies the problem with any interceptor list :( I hope the devs were truthful about the upcoming interceptor buff vs turrets.

I didn't mean offense Blail and it wasn't to tailor it close to regional/national lists, but i really would push towards the iniative bid in any list with a Phantom if he can (and he actually has the cards for). Only exception maybe with an intelligence officer.

I liked the Gunner with Whisper but put WE in Echo because he could have a different target the next time so having 2 TLs meant he had two options.

I don't like flying with "sacrificial ships" which really are all the low-PS swarm is for. That is why I like flying with both named Phantom pilots and I try to make the 3rd ship as survivable as possible. The longer he stays in the fight to distract the enemy, the better!

What now..?

What now?!
