Quick way to a cardplayers' heart? Play at a gaming college!

By knew_b33, in UFS General Discussion

Ok so here's the lowdown; I was playing a game of UFS at the college I go to and then some of the other students were being curious about the game and started gawking at the cards in my binders (gawking as in Morrigan, Chun-Li, and some reason Bison -shrug-) Anyway I was playing a game against my roommate to kill time and the other students came over and saw that my roommate was playing Bishamon** and some people recognised him and I was playing Raphael:: (working on how fast I can kill) more people recognised him as is. Some students came over and asked if there were other game characters in the sets and I told them to look through the binders and a lot of them were wanting to learn how to play with their favorite character. Afterward I gave them the sites where you can buy the cards and they came back the next day with starter decks, most of them having Ivy and Nightmare though but there were like 10 new players after one incident and they're still playing in a UFS club.

Now it's slowly growing every week and when I go there I just get impressed by seeing how a public showing made the game get a boost around my area.

we've been doing that in Rochester for like 2 years now. The majority of the players in our area used to be ex-Magic players who found a lot of joy in the speed of UFS. Out of all the players that have been taught (myself included) a few play regularly at tournaments, and we still have a few playing at our local college.

Yeah, it's actually pretty awesome, one of the coolest things one of our players did is go on Ebay, buy up a lot of Legacy cards/promos and character promos cheap, and held local tournaments.

i wish somebody would do that around here lol i live like 5 minutes from Va tech and we got maybe 5 players from the whole college well maybe a few more but i think we could have alot more if we could get it promoted more

makes me want to get a group going at my University. This past september there were flyers asking players to join magic. If they do again i'll convert then :)

Well yeah I didn't expect such a rising at my school or even just people that had an interest because it was A) a fast game B) characters they knew

I was there for a while and we played some crazy team games... Ivy* and Nightmare* versus Raphael:: and Ryu::::

To be honest, I only got into it because it had my favorite street fighter character! =D and NOW I LOVE IT!!!

well duh, I'm sure most people started playing because of a character they loved was in it... me it was Taki, Astaroth and Chun-Li but after a year of ignorance for the open-ness of the game I now understand not to be ignorant about it since all the cards I played were strictly themed around my favorite characters.

I told all the new-er people playing that right away and some of them understand while others are still playing and gawking at Ivy

I want to do begin doing that this fall semester in San Antonio. Despite being a 2-year college, we're actually the most populated college in San Antonio, which I'd love to think is because we literally have an arcade in our cafeteria (3S, MvC2, CvS2, Tekken 5DR, and DDR9th to name the big ones).

That's pretty much how I've begun introducing it to my friends. Of course, almost everybody who goes to my college is a Tekken player, so come Set 13, there will be some happy people =)

score some followers totally Marco bring a tear to our eyes xP

I got into this game because and as soon as it got my favorite game of all time as a set... Darkstalkers... Got in and built **J. Talbain** and was the only 1 at my shop that couldn't die but couldn't kill either lol... Been trying to get new players into it constantly... Many learned but not many actually was willing to invest $5 for a cheap starting deck sadly... preocupado.gif

thats another one of the problems that we r having at my game store alot of people have interest in the game its just that they all have another hobby that takes priority over it or are just stopping them from trying 2 pick it up in the first place

Agreed

but a lot of players notice how our card game is better. I know I belonged to a pretty elite Yugioh group, and we all quit the game to play UFS instead. All those people who gripe, "But I spent so much money!" are just babies. I've poured like...6+ years into Yugioh, and got little for ALL of my cards (because contrary to belief, you're simply not going to get anything for your cards, unless they ARE that rare), but you just gotta move on, and join the better game =)

I wish you could tell them that lol they are mostly magic players who say that but im already playing magic so why change blah blah blah idk we are making some progress though and the new set helped so much its crazy

Games like MTG/YGO/Pokemon are flawed in that, not only do your guys last forever (unlike in UFS, where your attacks are either discarded or added to momentum), but they're also permitted to attack for so long as they meet the minimal requirements (mana/energy, etc).

As such, any time a player so happens to get presence over another, you might as well scoop, because comebacks are harder in such uphill battles, whereas in UFS, any turn could be the last.

I don't even know what's going on with my area for ufs but my roommates and the school I used to go to play around with the game and of course I as well play the other games 'cept YGO because too me it's gone 'too far' and so forth, but I do play MTG at a high level and trying to get that high in UFS too but it seems harder -.-;;
